Oba of Yoruba in Sokoto, Abdulfatai Coker, has said that the Yoruba monarchs in the Northern part of the country should be appreciated and respected for sustaining the culture and tradition of the Yoruba in the region.

Coker, who was installed as the Sarkin Yoruba in Sokoto by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, in February, 2016, however, noted that Yoruba monarchs in the North were often relegated by visiting political leaders from the South-West.

Speaking to Sunday PUNCH in Sokoto on Friday, the Sarkin contended that his counterparts from other tribes were accorded due respect and honour by their political leaders whenever they visited the North for political rallies and other engagements.

He added that his roles as a Yoruba Oba in the North include mediating in conflicts and preventing crisis as well as mobilising his people and encouraging them to perform various political and civic responsibilities.

Asked what roles the Yoruba monarchs in the region played whenever political leaders from the South-West visited their state, Coker said, “We don’t get to play any significant role because they do not recognise us or appreciate our contributions.”

He added, “We don’t get the due respect and recognition especially from visiting Yoruba politicians. Recently, the All Progressives Congress leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was in the state and I was introduced to him as the Sarkin Yoruba in Sokoto, he just looked away.”

Una no respect una people den una go dey cry say person no respect una. Na wa!

So yorubas form leadership of their people in other regions yet cry when Igbos have Eze ndi Igbo in other places? Bad enough they take up 'Sarkin' and drop their indigenous yoruba titles yet their fellow yorubas disregard them! Is it jealousy that Igbos respect and recognize theirs in other states?

These leaders are supposed to serve as rallying points for visitors or settlers in other parts of the country yet silly miscreants see at as a challenge to one Oba or Baale somewhere. Insecurity is bad, try and change cos no one is interested in taking your property. Live and let live, simple!

No one says they are real, coronated Obas. However it is normal for people to have a rallying point outside their ancestral homes and it is only proper that they be respected because they also serve as contact points between other leaders and their indigenes outside this places of origin.

Why Sarkin now? Why not Oba of Yoruba? Maybe when you change your title to reflect your heritage, you will be respected. Respect is earned

To us an Oba is a spiritual and divine title. He is the accessory between the living and the deities and is why an Oba is called Igba'keji Orisa. An Oba must perform certain sacred rituals to the four corners of the earth, to the celestial forces and the terrestrial forces. These rituals are not possible for them in Sokoto, in Kano, in Umuahia, in Enugu. An Oba can ask that Gelede come out, or Egun come out or that Oro come out in Yorubaland. These are impossible in non-Yoruba domains.
The land in Sokoto has not been sancretized as a Yorubaland therefore if an Egun comes out it has no effect.

So the people themselves know and have been told repeatedly that Yoruba will recognize a position such as Leader of Yoruba in Sokoto, Leader of Yoruba in Enugu, but no Oba outside Yorubaland....or a land over which sacred rituals have been performed and re-baptized as Yorubaland...will be recognized.

This man in Sokoto know this but they try to be like Ibos and gather together and call themselves Oba. Unacceptable. Even Ooni does not recognize them when he visits around Nigeria.

Your post is dripping of intelligence.

I am a Yoruba and i learnt a lot just reading the post.

Some of folks here, Hotfreeze, MasterChen, AkinPhysicist et al are all intelligent guys.

It frustrates me that you hardly see bright guys on the piggynamiri's side to have cerebral discourse with.

Seems their brilliant ones stay away from NL. See the disgraceful comments above yours.

Thanks bro, I appreciate the feedback.

When we are prescribed medicine we are also given the dos and donts, or the permissible and non-permissible. Its very important to know and avoid the non-permissible.

"Doctor said I must not swallow three pills, but I want to see who will catch me if I go against his instruction and swallow these three pills".

There is no need testing the limits, it does no one any good.
