The old man knew I was peeking over his shoulders. He buried his head deep into his papers and raised it up only when I tried to peek . He adjusted his papa’s cap and flipped the pages of the newspapers. Each time I tried to read out something , his eyes nabbed me with curiosity. He always caught me in the act.

I glanced back at him and he snorted. Oh dear! Why was I being tortured like this. Please ,even just the headlines. I would be fine.

The tree that shaded us from the burning sun was my only comfort when the entire universe was against me. The wooden bench was my arch enemy as I sat down in pains ,waiting. Even old grandpa had trust issues.

His left eye was partially closed and it focused at the middle like he aimed at a target to instantly terminate it at any sign of life.

“Uhm.. . So .. What’s the headlines for today’sssss —?” I muttered only to cut short when his sniper brown eye killed the words in my throat.
I swallowed down my saliva and it didn’t go down well.

” Ok– I gueeeessss—Boko Haram attacked a mosque in the south east…yesterrrrdayyy…?” I managed to joke, and got him smiling a forceful smile.

The man/ woman who shot Tayo , was still at large and the police were not active anymore. I thought about it on my way to “Solid start Montesorri” . I had told Kate to let me be there for her in times of trouble. To let me comfort her. And protect her .

I went through a lot as a kid. I had lost both parents at age 10, no siblings and grew up with the worst human ever to have walked the earth’s surface – my uncle, who spanked me at every given opportunity and left a scar on my right forearm. I had been through sorrow, and it didn’t stop there- My uncle died later, leaving me all alone to my father’s empire.

” Life is not perfect ” Old mister Sniper said, when I was lost into thoughts.

” We try to understand , but we fail. ” He continued ” Believe me.. If only it were easier to always protect those we care about , life would have been less complicated.”

So he could talk. Hmm, I thought he was D and G( dumb and grumpy ).

I was silent. I imagined how he knew what was on my mind. He must have been a mind reader. Or maybe his newspaper had magical powers . Was it his half closed eye?

” How did–”

The school bell saved me. Students came out of the big gate across the streets. I got up from the bench and took out a bevy of flowers from my car’s back seat .

” You kno–”

As I turned back to the wooden bench I was shocked to see it empty . The old man had disappeared. Strange . D–n strange . My feet became cold as I walked towards the gate with the flowers behind in one hand.

I waited and hoped on the invisible forces of luck to help me out. I was going to do the unthinkable.
Kate came out, later, stressed up and tensed.

” Hey! ” She said with a smile that broke every chain of captivity . Even The devil would be glad to see her smile.

” For you … ” I stretched out my hidden arm.
Her eyes said something different from that on her mind. She suddenly became blank in smiles and any sign of joy grew smaller . Smaller, and smaller until there was none left on her face ..

” I’m sorry but I cant. I can’t… ” She muttered out and left my arms hanging as she moved away from me.

” At least let me-”
She turned and her black wavy hair glided in the same manner.

” I know what you are driving at–” just then her son came out running to hug her. She looked back at me and said ” I just cannot do it”

I perfectly understood what she meant. She wanted me to be around , but the “friend zone ” was waiting for me for with open arms.

” I came before you nah.. ” The tall guy said as he pushed his way into the line.

” Abegi , you didn’t see me here when you entered? ” The grumpy looking man replied.

” You must be mad o. See this man , Me that have been here for an hour or so”

” Your English self is as local as you”
They argued about unreasonable things until a security guard called them to order.

I wanted the interview to be over as soon as possible. The queue was like people who wanted to apply for a lottery.

I had promised Kate that things would be fine. Tayo was still in coma and it became difficult for me to get a new work. I had lost contact with Damilola, and she had not called me for sometime. School fees and house rent problems became a new burden as all the money I had, was used in my treatment. We went back to ” from hand to mouth”.

” Next please.” Came the voice of the interviewer.

I thought it was my turn but I looked and saw the sea of people before me, I was the last on the line.
When it actually got to my turn. I was already worn out , thirsty and weak.

” So , Mr.–” The man said
His looks were not very important to me but he seemed nice. He flipped my c.v and peered through his glasses at me.

” I’m sorry Mr Gabriel E. Odili.. your ” he muttered and my heart beat stopped.

” My what sir?

” Your skills are not qualified for the position you applied for, Yes we want craftmanship in this new project but–”

I had heard enough. I stood up and cursed myself for waiting so long to be rejected. It was the third time that day. I went home and felt like the worst father and husband ever. I had failed in my duties.

A car drove into the compound I peeked through the window to see who it was.

It was him again.
The guy I saw with Kate on the day of the shootings . I had thought he was a nobody and I did not bother to ask my wife .
But this time I suspected him to be a culprit. Even more when he hugged Kate in front of my son.

” D–n you…. ” I punched my fist into the wall.

Damilola

Thinking about something that is not yours to have in the first place, is very tiresome and energy draining. I stopped making contact with the man I thought I loved ( although I was not sure if he ever returned the feelings). I tackled more important issues that became too personal. I succeeded in bailing my mother from jail and relocated her to Jamaica.

Kemi adviced me to let Gabriel off the hook, as he was already committed to another woman. I desired a love of my own. She suggested I tried out new things, go out and see other men : which I did as there were many fishes in the river. Unfortunately non felt like Gabriel.. None was as sweet and understanding as him. None ever touched my soft spot and made my heart leap and bubble with anticipation…
It was the very opposite of attraction : it was shere forced affection.

” I have to leave , please …” I said , already disgusted by the bragging fool who sat across the table.
He was so pumpous and idiotic , all in one . He Exaggerated about everything: ranging from how many fleet of cars he had and to the daily importations of tanker loads of goods he commanded. The typical “Igbo man” style. Of course he was , no doubt about that .

“Why? Kwanu(what’s the problem) “. He asked in a very thick accented tongue.

” Nne , we just got here . Wh— why are you leaving nah? . I can order for more “Nkwobi” ( A very delicious meal of meat and vegetables ) , you didn’t even take your small stout . Do you want to have more dry meat?”

The way which he pronounced the “Nne” was very ibotic , and I wondered if I resembled his momma or something. I hissed and grabbed my bag. I walked out ,while people stared at the drama going on at our table when he tried to stop me but I landed a slap on his left cheek.

” Get your hands off me.” I said “ti o ba ohun ode ( meaing :you are an idiot, in yoruba).

That was the seventh date in a row with seven different guys and none ever made it to the next level. They were just useless.

” So how did it go? ” Kemi asked with some joy in her voice.

She suddenly started living at my house and her reasons was that she wanted to be closer to me so as to give tangible advises . What sort of reason was that? Anyways she was always welcome to stay anytime.

” He thinks am his mother.. Let him go and date his mother , not me. I can’t be his “NNE” The guy was so annoying”
I hissed bitterly.

” What do you mean ?… Because he called you NNE…? What do you even want in a man?. Is it the way he talks or how he treats you? Lola buckle up o, I don’t understand you o…”

“The first guy you met last week , his bad breathe irritated you; then the second, it was his body odour or was it the cologn he used. The third guy had a small body physique and you concluded that his deek would be small too…What is wrong with you, Lola? She blurted as eyes opened like an automated teller cash dispenser.

I was silent and sat deep into the cushion. flung my hand bag to God knows where…..

I never had the idea of what I really wanted but , certainly not some cheap bragging fool or any other fool that couldn’t woo a lady.

” What happened today , Love ? Kate asked with her arms crossed and she stood at the centre of the parlour.

I was quiet when she entered the house. David came in before her and I pretended to be happy but immediately changed my facial expression when she followed behind . I thought she would have stopped to ask questions then but she went straight into the room and changed . Returned and stood before me like a mopol.

” Mtcheww. Is that the good afternoon you will greet your husband? ” I was angry but I hoped she didn’t notice it.

” Sorry Love..” she apologised” I was just concerned about your wellbeing and the job interview you went for today”

I expected her to say something better and not remind me of my failures, not remind me the fact that I was now broke as hell. To cap it all I was reminded that I just saw her outside ,hugging a stranger.. In front of my house. The same stranger whom I suspected to be behind Tayo’s present condition. She really wanted me dead so she could just get on with her life.. Maybe she was already tired of living with me…maybe..

” I don’t know why you want me dead ” I said ” I know women can kill a rich husband just to be with their lover , but I’m poor and have nothing . At least not yet . its very easy for you to just leave me like that…. Why try to kill me?

” What’s that suppose to mean? She was puzzled.
I looked straight into her eyes and sighed with regrets and less emotions.

” One thing I won’t do is sit around here and allow you and your lover kill me . Kate you can go on with your flirting but I won’t sit here and allow you to kill me before my time”

Katherine

” I don’t just understand him . I dont get it” I said to Mimi.

She was as silent as a grave yard. I suspected that she must have been shocked by the incidents which I reeled out to her.. She was the type of woman that would reply at any slightest opportunity . But now she was dumbfounded.

” What do you mean? ” Mimi asked ” w– what’s does he mean by YOU want him dead?

I couldn’t explain. I told her about my incident with Gabriel the previous day and she dropped her jaws down in disbelief. Gabriel’s conclusion was absurd and uncalled for.

I held him in high esteem but that fateful day, he proved to me that he was really frustrated. It showed in his eyes and I suddenly felt pity for him when I blocked his path from leaving the parlour.

” Please Kate. Let me pass nah. I’m tired . Even if you want to kill me , let me go and rest for today. Another day is a perfect chance.” ……

” My sister ” I said ” I’m confused here too. I have nothing to do with Tayo’s gunshot. And Why would Andy try to hurt Gabriel? The guy is too timid to boo a fly.”

” He is a man..men are like that and you don’t expect him to be happy when he is broke? Mimi replied, as she stroked her long wavy hair.

I sat down into the cushion in Mimi’s well furnished apartment. She stayed alone and it was the epitome of simple beauty .. I hoped she was going to get married anytime soon, it was rather to early to assume because she was like the queen of ” single forever”. She never maintained relationships or didn’t even try at all.

” But come o , babes” Mimi blurted out and tapped me on the laps..
” what is it?

” The mastermind of the gunshot was indeed a genius” She continued” Like , think about it : Get Tayo out of the picture and Gabriel is stranded… ”

There was some truth in what she said, but she had to explain better.

” Where are you driving at? I said.

” Maybe Gabriel wasn’t the target after all. He was wounded , fine. Then he used all he had on treating himself. And his best friend and ally is subjected to a coma.”

She tried to exlpalin even further and then it dawned on me that Tayo was Gabriel’s pivot. The life force of his existence. Remove Tayo, and Gabe is rendered hopeless.

” So He was just a pawn on the chess board. Is that what you mean?

Mimi sipped her juice and placed the glass on the table carefully.

” …. Think of him as the main price.. The King on the board”

I stared blankly at her before she continued. Cheerfully.

” … And o yes , Kathy . I’m so happy right now.. Elisha is back from the States”…

Gabriel

I left early for St Francis hospital just to avoid bustops overload . I waited on the pavillon for the next bus, and the day was not too bright yet. I gazed at my feet and wondered how I got to that point in my life . I already sold my car( in short Kate sold it when I was still receiving treatments).

” Bypass … Rumukuro.. Shoba shoba ( the Conductor called it as the bus stopped. The actual location was Choba and not shoba… But his weed fried tongue was saying otherwise).

” Bros you dae go?” He asked and jumped off the bus entrance.

” Enter moto nah… No time ” He tapped me on the back and called out more passengers.

When I got to the hospital , I was afraid to enter Tayo’s room . It felt like a ghost would tear me apart. Some mythycal guardian would disengage my limbs if I opened the door. I stood there for a while and summoned courage.

Inside the room , there were countless machines and a windpipe went down his throat aiding his breathing. His heart rate was shown on a screen on the left, and I shook with fear ; thinking it would stop any minute. His wife sat near his bed and lay her head on his right side.

” Omotola’ I said and touched her gently.

” Gabriel… What are you– you are here early….”

” Don’t worry . I came to relieve you off your night watch”
I chuckled a smile and she reacted positively to it.

” Well then ” She said” I’ll just go home and take a quick shower . But I’ll be back as soon as possible…”

” Take your time — Tally just take all the time you want. I’m here for Tayo. He is like a brother to me ”

She stood up and hugged me, tears showed down her cheeks . I could feel her heart beat . She was in deep pain.
We untangled and I watched her as she religiously kissed Tayo on the fore head , wiped his face with a towel and left reluctantly.

I sat down on the plastic chair. My mind was racing and thoughts flew in sporadically. I grabbed Tayo’s arms and the paleness shook me internally. He was almost at the brink of no return relying on machines for his life.

” You can’t leave me .. Bro .. Not yet. No , not yet man. We have been through alot, Tayo. Don’t let me grind it alone. ” I sniffed and blinked then continued” Bro.. I have a lead on the person who attempted to take your life. Soon I’ll have proof and he will pay dearly… I promise you– he will so rot in jail”

The gate kept banging as the person behind it was furious to get in. Who the hell could that be? The sound woke me up from my afternoon sleep. I went out towards the balcony to take a look at the intruder.

” Umaru ” I called out to my gate man.

He rushed out from the back yard and stood beneath the balcony. His singlet sagged and his trousers were soaked with sweat. I wondered why he chose to be stupid. I paid him good money, but he never took care of himself.

” What have you been doing ?

” Madam…” he began ” you dae do am for jugging”

He must be mad or something. I couldn’t believe my ears. He was jugging, and left the gate post unattended. Umaru had been my gate man for years and I let him stay even when he annoyed me most times . He was a married man and had a wife and numerous kids to feed.

” You are mad’” I said ” Umaru you hear me ? You are insane. Who did you leave the gate for? Can’t you hear that bang on the gate. Who is there?

He turned and looked at the gate . He behaved as if he couldn’t hear a single sound. He turned back to me and said. ” Madam ,,, Nobody I dae knock for gate nah”

He went to the gate and put his ear to hear the sound. I watched as he bent his neck to listen. I was hearing the bang , it was loud and driving me crazy.

” What do you mean? Open the gate and check”

When he unbolted the lock . He went outside. He came back , looked left and right but no one was in sight. I must have been dreaming, I pinched my left arm to be sure… No I was awake.

” I no see anybody o” He blurted out.

” Are you sure?.. OK lock the gate”

Immediately he locked it. The bang came again, this time even louder. I covered my ears and ran into the sitting room. I couldn’t take it anymore.

” Bisiola….”. Bisiola …” I cried out.

She came from running from the kitchen and I saw how calm she was. I was confused , am I the only one hearing the disturbing and ear piercing bang?

” Bisi ? Bisi What ….What— what is that noise? I fretted and shivered as fear gripped me and sweat breaking from every part of my body.

” What sound? She asked

” You can’t hear it?

” No ma,.– I can’t hear anything.”

I rushed outside to check for myself. I was afraid to unbolt the gate. I reluctantly peeked through the pigeon hole on the gate. I saw no one. Only the empty street. I walked back into the house. Somehow, the sound had stopped.

That night , it came again..

This time ,times ten of the initial one in the afternoon. I covered my ears with the pillows and screamed out loudly……..

Katethrine

” Who the hell is Elisha? ” I asked Mimi.

I forgot entirely about his identity ,but I knew he was someone to reckon with, someone we had known in the past .

” Oh Geez… Our friend Elisha ” She looked surprised ”

You can’t remember ? Elisha , the guy whom you thought wanted to date you…. He was always writing you short notes back then in high school.. He always acted like a girl, eventually you found out that he was gay and only wanted to be friends with you.”

I shook my head like a lizard waiting for an illumination from the sun. I remembered Elisha , who always wore a pink dress and had funny eye glasses with his hair always conditioned . I had wondered if he was given birth to, like that. If his parents cared or was he just another version of Boborisky and co?

I enjoyed Mimi’s and Elisha ‘s company back then. But I had to cut short of most friends when I got pregnant and dropped out of school. Only Mimi remained dear to my heart: A sister I never had.

” We’ll go to his hair saloon today” Mimi continued” Rumour has it that his , is one of the biggest in PH (Port Harcourt ).

” Seriously?..”

” Trust me babes, Elisha’s the new thing in hair dressing and beauty treatment”

Mimi smiled and gulped down her entire juice, while I managed to sip mine.

We left her house and visited Eli’s spar. It was huge and expensively designed . Inside, we reminisced and talked about a lot of things. It felt good meeting old friends again and I enjoyed the moment.

Days passed and time flied , I started noticing that Gabriel became conceited and he would stay out all night. He would return home dead drunk and some times slept on the pavement outside the door. It broke my heart to see him behave in a manner that was appalling .

He was never a drinker , at least for six years we had been married. That changed and succeeding nights he came home , he would open the fridge and say crazy things like

” Who left the headlamp of my car on?..

” Kate ,why is this toilet so cold?”

” Why is this thing always on silent mode… It doesn’t talk. Kate I think we need to re-brand and re-new this machine”

His voice was always tipsy and annoying.

I cried bitterly in my heart and prayed dearly: something I never did before .

” Gabriel , why have you turned yourself into a mere drunkard? ” I asked him one night he came back with his shirts hung over his neck and his belt half buckled.

” Well … My dear wife” he began” My love for you is driving me crazy. . I can’t help it every time I think about you and everyone else , who wants to leave me.. I left Dami…. Sorry I left my previous work to be with my family…..”

He shook his head and fell deep into the cushion before he belched and continued .

” My family was more important to me. Now see me, see me Katherine. Katherine , I’m useless. I’ve fallen deep into temptations , So deep that I regret what I have done . My dad left me and my sister when I was still twelve . Mama cried her eyes out for months, I became her comforter, husband and son. It hurt so badly that I couldn’t do anything to ease her pain.”

” Gaby..My–my love” I began passionately

” No listen to me , I never told you this before , because I hated him so much.. I did . Yvonne was still five then the night he left. Katey , He left– He left us for his other family and never came back. He never ca–came back” .. His voice croaked and tears clouded in his eyes.

” Soon you too will be leaving me for that rich guy- Yes that rich guy. I know you haven’t made up your mind yet, but not for very long.. Not for very long..”

His last sentence caught deep into my heart. I pitied the man he had become. He was now a shadow of his self. I knelt down and wiped away the tears in his eyes. I was not happy, not at all. His sudden behaviour was not attractive and disgusted the hell out of me.

” Why would you think of me that way ? I said ” I love you .. I love you with all my heart and wealth is secondary. Our family comes first”

I left Andy out of my speech because that would add more salt to Gabriel’s injury. I was not that type of lady.

I grasped the bottle of beer from his hand ,placed it on the table and stroked his face gently.He was a bit drunk but was not in stupor.

I guided him gently , raised his arms and beckoned on him to come along. He followed me religiously and we shut the door behind us . His arms pressed my butt softly and he pushed me so hard onto the bed that I hit my head on the wooden frame.

Gabriel.

I explored every part of her body that night,my fingers went into areas that were vital and hit every G spot.She had moaned and screamed stretching every part of her body in a manner that was scary and I thought she would die. After she hit her head on the wooden frame , I thought it was serious but she smiled and beckoned on me to continue like pain was her food. I used up all the energy left in me and it felt so good. So wonderful. She had rode me incredibly and I scratched my head in sweetness relishing the entire moment of joy.I grinded on for squarely twenty five minutes before c—-x .

” That was so… So wow!” She began

” You liked it? I asked as I cuddled her.

I buried a passionate kiss on her forehead as my lips landed on her soft skin. She jerked a little and twitched up her muscles. A smile grew unexpectedly on her cheeks.

I wrapped her under my arms and it felt like she was mine again. I had lost her once but now I could feel her heart beat right beside mine. I tried to be calm and watch her sleep in my arms after the invigorating sex we had..

” Mummy ?? Mummy? ” David cried out and banged on the door to my room.. I was still on the sheets and gazed at the ceiling fan.

” Mummy??— ” He continued .

Kate sprang up from the bed and tied her night gown round her unclad body. Her face was glowing as she looked at me lustfully, I could see the fire in her eyes and she said under her breathe.

” Bad boy– What are you looking at? -”

She blew a kiss towards me while I tried to cover my body properly to prevent my son from seeing the invisible .

” What is it honey? Kate asked Dave when she opened the door.

Dave squeezed his face in pain and agony..He rubbed his stomach and said softly

” My tummy— ”

I feared the worst.He had always had stomach upset somedays at early hours of the morning but , due to the allergic reactions he had to ” flargine” and some other stomach drugs , Kate gave him honey before the drugs.

” OK baby, let’s go the kitchen” Kate said ” sorry– It will be over soon”

” Ouch… OK”

They left the room and the door barely closed behind them.My phone beeped inside my trouser pocket which lay on the arms of a chair , near the bed. It was Kemi and she sent a very confusing text message :

Gabriel, what have you done to my friend? Please that Baba that gave you jazz or charm to use on her , better go and undo what you have done o. Im begging you please. … Lola, is now running mad.. She hears voices and she has kept on saying ” He is at the gate… He is at the gate…” Which one is that again? And this has been since yesterday. Leave her alone , I’m begging you in God’s name.
I won’t forgive you if anything happens to her. *

I furrowed an eyebrow and tried to understand the content . I read it again. This time carefully. What could she mean by that?
I dialed her number and it rang but she picked after the second ring.

She started off by yelling at me and I kept quiet. She told me how Damilola thought she was hearing voices around the house and how she sacked her gate man. How she nearly stabbed her housemaid ; because they both said there was no one knocking at the gate. She said that Damilola told her that a man was appearing in in her dreams and blood ripped out of his heart drenching his white shirt. He was always trying to touch her in the dream. She said his voice was like the sound of thunder. According to her ,he spoke in different languages , especially French.

” OK ..uhm!! So here is what we’ll do” I began ” Take her to see a psychiatrist ..and ….”

” This is spiritual ” Kemi blurted out..

I removed the phone from my ear, looked at it and surprisingly said ” Spiritual ? …What the—-”

I calmed kemi down by telling her what to do. She was fretting and I could hear Funmi ‘s voice in the background as she weeped bitterly . After an absorbing phone call- I hung up the line.

I turned toward the door and saw Kate standing there with her arms crossed . I knew that there was some reason why she did not smile, if it was when she was happy , it would have been easier to tell her emotions.

When did she come inside? Had she heard everything I said? . I put on a short , while I thought of the possibilities of her shouting out in anger and walked toward the wardrobe . There was something that that went on at that moment, I could not imagine but somehow, it felt that her eyes were cast upon me.

She stared at me while I grabbed my towel .

” So who was that ?

” No one– of importance, just one of my numerous associates.” I cunningly replied .

I turned and wrapped her into my arms as my left arm went for her hips.. I kissed her,whispered into her ears while I gently stroke her backside.

” No one , Bae. Its really not important . Just forget about it.”

” But—” She tried to say when I s—-d her lips passionately…

As it was almost four in the morning.. I couldn’t sleep anymore. I had taken a cold shower and laid with my chest upwards , meanwhile Kate slept peacefully.

I brought out from the drawer, the complimentary card I took from her hand bag. .It had the name and address of her new ” Lover “.

It had his picture , he was cute though. Fresh and wealthy, but his smile was fake. I couldn’t think straight but wished him already behind bars ..

The man who tried to snatch my wife away from me with his wealth. I had been sweet that night to Kate so she wouldn’t suspect me or event think Im investigating the both of them.

I left in the morning before anyone could wake up. When I got to Dami’s house it was almost deserted. The gate was barred from inside. The window to the Gateman’s house was shut and the room quiet, unlike before when the sound of morning Quran call filled the air . The dogs that used to bark inside were cut short or maybe they had been sleep drugged by Dami. It felt like death , everywhere.

I knocked on the gate and waited for some minutes.. Then someone came and the gate flung open.

” Thank God … ” She exclaimed..

” Just so you know” I began” I’m not here to pretend like I care for that woman.”

I hated the sound of it. I saw myself graduating from a hired daddy (or ex hired daddy) into a dualized attention giver. Adding that to all my problems which seemed unending, obviously I needed a miracle, a life changing miracle.

” Dami is not just ” any woman” Kemi blurted and rolled her eyes.

She led the way and her obnoxious behind tracked from one side to the other. It moved in a quick successive momentum and I could not help but watch the clock mode of her butt.

She turned and caught me staring , Her eyes arrested my gaze and I congealed internally but gave a frowning face that seemed uncalled for.

” Dream on” She heaved a big sigh of disgust. ” Your juju will not work, not on me ”

If I had not been very accustomed with Nigerian movies , I would have jumped out of my pants at the sight of the hideous figure that hugged me . Her hair was like a bush that begged for a cutlass as it towered upwards and was very unkempt. Her face was the photocopy of the freak show character “Chucky”. I noticed that her eyes were bloodshot red and the pockets of skin beneath them sagged . I trembled at the sight of her night dress, she hadn’t taken it off and her cleavages were barely hidden from view, unpadded dangles evrywhere , unlike anything I had ever seen before.

” Jesus!! ” I exclaimed while I tried to flee but her grip on my waist restricting my motion.

” Please , don’t let him hurt me.. Don’t let him hurt me.. .” Dami ‘ s voice shreiked as she held on tight to my chest cavity.

I turned and she was indeed who I thought she was , but her appearance lacked lustre , as if she hadnt slept in months. Who exactly was she referring to, who wanted to hurt her. ? I knew she was not joking this time around.

” Thats what she has been saying since last night” Kemi said pathetically.

There was a spark of ambivalence in Kemi’s voice and I was sure to pick it up that she blamed me for everything. She blamed me for the fact that Dami lost sight of the difference between true love and lust. She said I had drove her friend insane with my “yeye” Love as she put it.

” Screw me.. You can just start crucifying me already..mtchew” I cursed under my breathe.

Kemi pulled her friend away from me , who was now bitting her nails and moving her head like a lizard…I thought it was over until Damilola blurted out .

” Gabe… I saw him.. I saw him…. He was here”

” He wanted to hurt me…” she cried out and as if she had seen a ghost and she jumped towards me again from the cushion.

” He is here … He is at the gate.. Oh God ,I can hear him…. Gabe please make him stop.”

That was indeed craziness in the highest order.

I cuddled her and wiped her tears as they showered down. I glanced at everyone in the room, they were all waiting for me to take a decision.. Bisi , Dami , Kemi and even little Funmi who was crying her eyes out in my arms. The poor little girI was caught in between the drama, having no idea what happened around her. I loved her so much and leaving her that moment, was not an option.

” Dadd–daddy?” Funmi began mumbling .

” Yes, princess. ”

She asked me if her mother was going crazy. She asked me why I was always there whenever there was trouble looming, that I had promised to stay forever , but I only came around occasionally. She then concluded by calling me “super man”. Funny though.

I kept silent and turned towards Dami who was now an apology to behold .

” So who exactly–Who exactly did you see in your dreams?

” A man…He was tall and dark—-he was—-”

” Oh dear God” Kemi cut in ” Are you guys serious? She is hallucinating.For the sake of stupidity , she could have seen anyone ”

She hissed heavily.

I suspected something, then I remembered Kemi said earlier that the man was speaking French. I knew just one person with that description (tall , dark and spoke French ). I tried to understand, but it wasn’t clear: why would Tayo, who was in Coma move around like a ghost? Since ghosts barely disturbed innocent people , I tried to fathom what Dami had to do with the situation at hand. Was she a culprit too?

I got up from the sofa and made for the door without asking anymore questions .

” And where do you think you are going? Kemi blocked my path. Her eyes were indeed furious and angered. ” You want to leave her like this eh? If you think I’ll let you pass. You must be joking”

” Get out of my way”

I made attempt to slap her face when a soft touch on my shirt calmed my storm. The touch was so soft that I lost track of time. Everything stood still and then at that moment , I felt compassion and pity. It was my little princess ” Funmi”

” Daddy- Remember your promise.” She said, her eyes were in tears.

I froze and my knee buckled . I was uncertain at that moment what to do . I took the keys to Dami’s SUV car and gently helped her up to her feet.

” Let’s take you to a specialist…You need help. ” I said as I put my jacket round her half unclad body.

I woke up and my arm brushed the empty bed sheet beside me, it felt like he had disappeared and I opened my eyes to check if it was real. I saw his wrist watch near the drawer, he never left it at home. He must have been around the house somewhere. I got off the bed and opened the cupboard.. His shoes (the best one he had, and the one he loved most) was gone. It dawned on me that he had left early just like he did on days he was still working.

” He has started again….” I cursed under my breathe .
I went outside and prepared for the day’s activities.

” Close the door” I said as I put his school bag on my left shoulder.

Dave jacked the door and his little arms grabbed the locks as he put them together. I watched him as I searched for the keys in my hand bag with my fingers.

I brought them out and bolted the lock. I was still busy when someone came upon me from behind. The person’s arms touched me and cold shivers travelled down my spine. I turned and shocked even more because of whom I saw. I was afraid, not because he was there but because I couldn’t risk it if Gabriel saw him again.

” Geez–” I shrieked out.

” Sorry … ”

” What are you doing here? I asked as he waved at David , obviously ignoring my question..

“Making sure you arrive safely to work” Andy said and smiled.

He brought out sweets from his pocket and gave them to Dave. That moment I realised that he was taking it even farer than I expected. I couldn’t get myself to yield to his desires..

” What will you say?

Dave thanked him casually just like I had taught him.

Although Andy was nice to my son , Gabriel was my son’s father and I respected him no matter his faults.

” You have to be careful ” I began again ” Andy please stop visiting my house anyhow you like ”

He took our bags and put them in his car. Then looked at me as I stood there waiting for his reply.

” You coming or not? his voice asked.

Of course I was coming. I sighed .

Elisha invited me and Mimi to his saloon opening party at a very expensive hotel. I was not sure if I wanted o attend, and even Gabriel had initially refused to let me go untill Mimi convinced him that I was safe with her. He could have tagged along but he said he had urgent issues to attend to.

” Trust me…you don’t have to worry , Kate is safe with with me” Mimi reassured him.

At the event, I saw a lot a guests. I saw a lot of high class citizens, it felt like I was the only paupar there. The feeling was awkward . Everyone at the party was either Elisha’s friend or was related to him and they were all filthy rich .

” Ladies and Gentlemen” The voice of the Mc called out in the very large ball room..

” Please do enjoy your evening and I hope you don’t go home unsatisfied tonight… I’m sure our host, Eli has the most gifted hands to make you feel relaxed both physically and otherwise.”

Everyone laughed but I didn’t find it funny at all. It was vague.

I tried to find a seat when Mimi pointed towards the high table and said.

” Guess who is the guest of honour? …your very own … Hmm..you know who.”

This time I got totally confused and started asking questions . I thought maybe Mimi invited him too. Else he wouldn’t have been there. She denied it, and almost argued with me. We were in a verbal dispute when he came over and asked me to dance with him.

” Seriously?–”

“Why not, its just a dance “he smiled and signaled the piano man to give us a calm waltz music.. We opened the stage and other couples followed suit , one at a time.

” Why are you always around me– I can’t even breathe anymore without your permision? I asked

” Then let me breathe for you” He said in the most romantic way ever.

I was sort of shy and being a married woman, anybody could spot me there . But as Andy said , its just a dance. A little wouldn’t hurt, so we moved to the sound of the music.

I asked him why he was at the party, I wondered if he had conspired with Mimi just to see me that evening. He smiled endlessly and that alone melted my heart. His arms held me firmly behind my torso and I could feel he warmth of his presence as he glided me from side to side rhythmically.

“Elisha is my little cousin…” he began” His uncle took care of me when I lost my parents. And I returned the favour by sending him abroad to study medicine and surgery, but instead , he returned a hairdresser and I’m still wondering what that has to do with science.”

It sounded funny but Andy was a book full of mysteries -who knows what else he was not telling me and I just learnt that my best friend was his cousin . Where had he been all along and how come Elisha never mentioned him in our discussions.

” small world..I never knew Elish—” I said when suddenly I felt an urge as my bowels moved up . It ravaged me internally and I covered my mouth with my arms.

” What’s wrong? Andy said surprised.

” Its nothing ,am—-” I paused immediately and covered my mouth with both hands, my eyes searched for the nearest convenience room available , even just a sink bowl. I was about to….

” You are not looking so good ” Mama said in Ibo. She was holding a cup of water in a her hands.

” I’m fine , … Its just a little headache” .

She sat down on the sofa in my father’s parlour and crossed her legs , slightly cautious of her left foot so as to prevent hurting it. The chair in which she sat brought back memories to me and I could remember when my dad bought it many years ago. He saved for months , toiled all day and night so he could get a comfortable sofa that could at least make the parlour lively.

” Papa ? I had asked him ” Do we really need this chair?

He smiled and tapped it calmly ” Well my dear… The least I can do is give you and your mother a comfortable chair, since a comfortable life is not so easy to get”

” But you could have used the money for something else..”

“One thing is certain” He sat down then continued ” Even if I buy expensive things once in a while , I wont neglect your other needs, I just wont– that is how much I love both of you – you and your mother.”

His eyes were filled with expectations as he got up and his arms enclosed me perfectly in an embrace that set me in the path to achievements and goal realisation. I was just fifteen then and I had dreams , big dreams– but dreams became nightmares when I got pregnant for love or you can say naivety ( I was so naive then) , I gave birth to David and that was indeed a game changer, which led to my present situation.

” How long has it been? Mama’s voice brought me back to the present .

” What? I asked.

” I’m your mother …and also a woman…I can tell when— Katie , you are heavy– you look a little pale. Ada m ( my first daughter) , you are pregnant.” she said with certainty.

I sat up and raised my head a little trying to hide the fact that she was indeed saying the truth. I always felt dizzy and very sick during the first trimester. I felt it was common amongst some women but mine was very pronounced, even a blind man would notice.

She gave me the cup of water and curdled me gently when she stroke my back. I gulped down a little water and it didn’t enter so well. I stared into the yellow rubber cup..

” Kate ” Mama said again ” When will you tell him?

By her words “him” , I was very sure she meant my husband. That was the same question Mimi had asked me the night at the opening ceremony of Eli Spar. I had rushed into the lavoratory behind the hall and threw up , vomiting my guts out. My head was heavy and I could say for sure that I felt like the walls closed in on me, like the walls were getting bigger and the spaces between them got smaller, while I was caught in the middle.

” I don’t know– I’m — Im worried ,Mimi” I said when I managed to sit on the sparkling tiles in the corridor to the laboratory. Mimi joined me and her arms crossed my shoulders.

” Why ? ”

” He is not ready for another child. He will overwork himself trying to be a perfect father . I know Gabriel , He objected the idea of having another baby– even when his mother asked him for one’..

” That’s absurd” Mimi said ,with a raised eyebrow.

” Tell me someth— you are kidding right?…But he went ahead and had — you know – had sex without protection. He was not drunk ,was he?

” A little , ” I said remembering the night as it reeled out before my subconscious mind .

” Dear lord, Kate, you not a baby nah– he is your husband fine , but at least you could have taken control pills or something.,, you are joking right?

” I’m not jok–” I was about to say when Andy knocked on the door and asked if we were okay in there. He wanted to know what was happening to me.

He seemed scared or he pretended to be ignorant of what was happening . …but somehow cared about my health.

” I’m fine ” I replied ” we ll be out soon. Give me five minutes**

I dropped the cup on the table and brought out my family portrait which was small enough to enter my hand bag. It was so beautiful and Gabe’s looks killed me even more. I realised how much I wanted to keep that lovely family together . .

” You have a lovely family ” Mama added , and waited for my reply” soon a special one will join you in this bliss”

I smiled cheerfully and told mama what I intended to do, I was going to let Gabriel know when the time was right, he would understand under the perfect conditions.

In weeks that followed I avoided Andrew, it was the right thing to do… I was giving him false hope by sticking to his idea of being “just nice to me”. He was willing to remain friends but I feared it might escalate into something more intimate.

My bump became a little ( well not too) obvious on the outside and I religiously sampled it often for Gabriel to notice, but unfortunately he didn’t . He never asked , not even a sign . I was having spells of headaches , and the whole universe rotated occasionally in my eyes…still the master of the house was unconcerned towards his servant. He was always on the phone with one “doctor Johnson”, they were always discussing about the health of a particular patient , I knew it was not Tayo. He practically ignored me, but occasionally gave me a passionate kiss and hug that got me wondering .

*was he for real?* I had asked myself .

His mind seemed to be somewhere else and his body was just an illusion that I saw which literally gave me comfort in that period of trial. . .I guessed maybe it was because I didn’t let him enter my head and read my mind.

” Love? ” I said when I dropped the bowl of rice on the table.

” Yes love…what is it?

He didn’t even glance at me , he just took up the spoon and drew the plate nearer when he put stew on the rice he had already dished for himself. He didn’t even allow me to do that for him. * Oh God * I thought loudly to myself.

” I’m—” I mumbled the words.

” You are what? He asked under his breathe munching food and that seemed more important to him….

I sat down on the opposite chair and looked at him blankly, then my gaze went to David . Dave knew I wanted to say something important and he frowned at his dad for not giving me audience.

” I’m — ” I began again but this time his phone rang and he raised his hands up signaling me to pause.

” Let me take this call..Hello..” he said excusing himself out of the room. He didn’t want to take the call in my presence, he always did that when he wanted to hide something.

He came back minutes later . Resumed his dinner devouring and his eyes started at me ” So you were saying?

” Its nothing- “I said “I’m just thinking about how we are going to spend and cope in this festive period that’s approaching ”

I lied.

Gabriel smirked his lips and told me that he had it under control. He was so sure of himself,he even brought out two little boxes from a leather bag next to him . It had been there and I wondered what was inside before that moment. He gave one to me, the other one to Dave.

” Whats inside ? I asked.

” open it..” His mouth was full of food as he said those words.

Inside mine was a jewelry that was worth a fortune. It was pure gold and I became afraid, afraid of where he had gotten so much money to buy it. He had money to lavish on pendants when our family was practically unstable and for God’s sake I was expecting a baby.

” I can’t take this ” I blurted out . ” Its too expensive , where’d you get the money for it, please take it back .”

His eyes betrayed his thoughts. He stopped eating abruptly, meanwhile I hadn’t taken even a bite out my own food I had lost my appetite and it was obvious he just did too…. Gabriel didn’t say a word, he got up from his seat and pushed his plate away…He stared at me and walked out , banging the door to his room behind him .

“What had I done wrongly? What had I said? I asked myself.

He left his phone on the table and I was afraid to take it . My palms trembled as I frequently turned towards the room door , and I thought he would come out any minute . I took the phone and went to the last dialed numbers.

” Princess?? ” I asked when I saw the last called number as it glared right before my eyes . The name was questionable.. Who was his princess? I dialed the number and it rang…it was ringing…
Just then , a hand grabbed the phone with force, away from my ears. ..I turned .* Oh God he was furious and angry..
* I thought out to myself.

I swallowed down my saliva and waited for my fate. As he gave me the silent treatment , I sweated all over my body and waited for something… Anything….. either a resounding slap or a thorough beating. Both were inevitable now…

I watched as Kemi paced the room in anxiety. She turned round and moved to the door, came back , sat down and got up only to repeat the sequence.

” What’s it? I asked .

The terror I had experienced in recent weeks had left me shaky and all fussed up. Dr. Johnson had been giving me home treatment. He was also taking me on therapy .

Dr Johnson was named the doctor of the year after he performed an open brain surgery on a woman who had a set of twins in her. The lady was mentally ill. The medical staff hadnt known before the operations that she was pregnant. They had taken result scans and did xrays but somehow it seemed the results were tampered with, like someone wanted the woman to die in the theatre. It was when they stated the operation and Dr Johnson took charge of the situation that they discovered she had two pronounced foetus growing inside of her. Her blood pressure had spiked and the cardio team discovered blood circulation was random and rapid. Everyone wanted to stop the operations but Johnson proceeded and after a tasking job of saving both mother and unborn children, he got an accolade for his brilliant and gifted craftsmanship.

” I don’t trust that doctor ” Kemi said.

” Why? I asked.

” He seems to be up to something..” She crossed her arms together .

” But he is my personal doc–” I was about to say when she cut me short.

” Even that Gabriel..He is too sweet to be true. Trust me Dami he is planning something big.. And now you have given him full access to all your properties .”

I shook my head and pinched my nose , the last thing I wanted was someone reminding me how much I was willing to do to get love from Gabe. He had requested that he wanted full control over my wealth. I gave him everthing including my heart. On a lighter note, it would have been difficult for me to do but somehow it was as if my eyes were closed when I did so. I had a plan.. It was far from failing…

” The decision is final” I said to Kemi who was now getting on my nerves and ranting endlessly.

” You can’t be serious — He is a golddi—”

” Don’t ever call him that, ” I shouted at the top of my voice .

” Why? Because he promised to love you in return if he gets access to your wealth? I’m laughing so hard right now Dami– honestly”

” Its not what you think’ I replied .

Indeed it wasn’t, I did what I had to do. There was no reason why I couldn’t give him my bank accounts details , my house occupancy details and every other thing. I knew what I wanted in return and a little sacrifice won’t hurt.

” Don’t tell me you have settled for that cheap love he is willing to offer ” kemi blurted out again.

” He will love me soon,everything is falling in — ”

I paused when I saw Tayo’s ghost. He was not dead yet but in a coma ,why was he disturbing me? He was shaking his head as if to say ” your own is strong o” . His eyes were fixed at me..Blood soaked his left shoulder. I got confused , I wanted to scream…. But it was just an illusion and the wind blew the cotton briskly revealing the lampstand behind it that had the shape of a human head. I got up and removed it from the table ,near the window. It was a bit dark outside. Kemi didn’t notice what just happened .

” Are you sure? You are still hallucinating my dear, wake up— That reminds me : are you still seeing that man , what’s his name again ?

” Tayo?

” Is that his name? Well whatever ” She said ” But I’m suspecting you Lola because I think you had something to do with his predicaments”

” Why would I want him dead? Tayo is useless to me. I won’t stoop so low to committing murder…abeg talk better thing”

” You are such a terrible liar you know, Dami I am your friend and I can smell your lies like they are bread crumps garnished with sweet honey. And I didn’t say anything about death…”

” What’s that supposed to me–mean ” I said while I sat on an arm length stuffed chair. I felt a sharp pain on my arms, where Johnson had been giving me shots of sleep inducers.

” Now that’s what I’m saying” Kemi said ” You are too cunning and evil, but as your friend — as your sister : I will advice you to stop this game ”

” He gave me conditions ”

” Who ? What conditions?

I told her how Gabriel had placed a contract on the table for me at the office of Dr. Johnson . kemi was absent then, she had gone to the reception to fill in details of my scheduled home treatments. Dr Johnson had given her the list of things she was to fill in the form.

” So .. He played his cards on you…mhen this guy is smart.”

” His motives were clear , He would take care of me and Funmi ,if only I had him calling the shots. He was to pay my bills and run my activities in an anonymous way ”

Kemi was shocked , she shrugged and chuckled a smile. ..
” And you agreed to that? Even the crook of a doctor was there too?

I shook my head.

” You’ re either foolish or this mental situation has made you blind. For God’s sake he is taking advantage of you .He is just going to use your money and take care of his family and when he is done he will abandon you..”

” Why are you quick to judge me? come over here lemme show you something.. You too have skeletons in your cupboard… I’m not a fool and Nobody is a saint.”

I brought out my iPad from my hand bag. I unlocked it and opened a video of Gabriel and Kate arguing in their parlour. ..I had a hidden camera placed in his house . It was on real time and they were having dinner at the moment… Obviously Kemi had underestimated me, but then she was shocked and speechless at what she saw…

” You are the devil herself ..” She acknowledged .

” Am not ,I’m only protecting my investment” I said smiling endlessly. …

” You are the worst human being ever” She shouted at the top of her voice and flung objects at me.

I dodged the attack but a book which she launched at me hit my left ear, the hard cover brushed my skin and soon I felt pain grow there .

” My dear let’s just stop this drama” I said while grabbing her arms.

She was yelling out at me and I couldn’t take it anymore. The urge to lay hands on my woman consumed me. I barely understood what demon was manipulating my actions and I saw as my little boy was crying his eyes out with some grains of rice in his mouth which was wide open. Kate had demanded to know where I got the money from … I was not on a payroll neither had I any tangible business ,so how come I miraculously surmounted with a pure gold pendant as a Christmas gift for her.

” Leave me ” She tried to break free ” Let go off me .. I can’t believe you anymore.I have been listening to your lies. I wont do that again. You have turned into a beast, a thief and who knows ,maybe you are now a drug dealer or a criminal…”

” Is it not better? Huh ? Why can’t you see that am doing this for you. I love you Kate . I so much love you ”

Tears nearly escaped my eyes and that was the last thing I wanted . My son shouldn’t see me weak as it would mar his regard for my masculinity.

” You are a lier ” She said when I let go of her and she fell gently on the floor.

I went backwards and sat involuntarily on the soft chair in the parlour. My world was gradually coming to a c—-x . Dave joined his mother and both of them cried their eyes out. I had inflicted pain and sorrow on the two people who mattered most to me in the whole world. I was indeed a monster. Lord have mercy !

I surged ahead again, this time to do penance for my bloated sins.

” I’m sorry , ” I began ” I’m deeply sorry . Love I’m — ”

” Get your hands off me ” She blurted out and wiped the tears of her eyes..

” I can’t believe why you have sunk deep into evil- who knows what terrible things you have been doing that I’m not aware of..and this night you nearly hit me…”

” But I didn’t ” I cut into her statement and tried to grapple her hands to calm her down.

” Yet you almost did . Why ? Gabriel why?

I couldn’t tell her why. I dared not tell her why — I saw myself loosing evrything if I did so. I shook my head and sat silently, then went down on my knees and tried to hold her again. This time , she gave me a hot slap and it echoed deep into my ear drums. I virtually heard the ” Beetles ” boy band playing rock and roll in my ear.

” I’m disgusted with you” Kate retorted and this time mean with every syllable of the sentence…

I stood up and dragged myself into the bedroom.. I kicked the art work which I had sculpted sometime ago . It was a masterpiece and I had kept it in my room for its glory. That night it became my anger toy, as I took it up and scatteerd the entire room with rage… The artifact broke into pieces and I bled on my palms. That not withstanding , I landed my clutched fist into the mirror on the divider and it pieces shattered into my knuckle. . The entire room turned into a den for anger dispensation as I unleashed it bitterly on every single object.

I fell asleep in the rubble that I had created out of the belongings in the room. I would rather do that anytime , anyday than lay a finger on my wife . I couldn’t stand it, I would even kill if any man dared it towards her..hot tears trickled down my eyes. I only wanted what was best for my family, I realised bitterly that all that glittered was not gold.

” What is this? ” Kate’s voice called out to me and I could here it so loud and clear.

I sparingly opened my eyes and to my surprise she was holding a picture of me and Funmi. It even had a sticker which read ” I love you so much daddy– with Love, Funmi”. How did that picture get into my room?

” I dont know— where did you see that picture? I asked

” I found it in your scattered belongings , of course you had hid it somewhere.’ She waited for me to bluff.

” That picture is not mine and I don’t know how it got here” I said and sprang from the floor immediately.

” You cheat—- I hate you” She cried out.

” its not what you think okay” I began. ” Let me explain, its—”

” So this is the same reason why you have been behaving strange…And this little girl, she is the same Funmi ? Your daughter with another woman right? Oh God …” She wimpered as the words choked her even more.

“Gabe ,I so hate you right now . The same Funmi you were calling in your sleep.. Remember I asked you who she was and you said she was Tayo’s cousin’s little—-Imagine the guts you had to lie about it”

” I can explain” I cut in.

I fell on my knees and begged her to try and understand. She slapped me repeatedly and walked out of the room.

” Kathy- Love ?, please try and understand , its not what you think it to be, there is more to it than the obvious” I shouted with clouds of tears in my eyes.

I ran after her in the dead of the night , she had taken her belongings. She took Dave along with her. She flung the bags into the bus which she drove and entered the driver’s seat .

” Please don’t leave , dont leave me” I held the door to prevent her from closing it.” We can still make this work…where will you go now?

” I hate you– ” She said ” and I’m obviously in no position to continue living with you . Never , I’d rather die than do that–”

” Mummy , please dont leave daddy…please” Dave intervened for me. ” Let’s go back into the house , please”..

” Love ,listen to your son, please don’t leave. I can explain everything . Let me explain…”

” Its too late for that.. You had your chances but you kept on lying– you are a devil, let go off my door”.

She brushed my arms off and banged the door , started the engine and I watched as she zoomed off . I could have followed them but I had no car again , I had dropped Dami’s car earlier that day to prevent suspicion.

Observing someone you know will neither be better than you expect him or her to be, rather their situation would worsen if you tried to intervene was like biting your own lips to stop pain. It was medicine after death…I looked at Elisha from head to toe.

What did he even want that made him to drive two kilometres that night just to see me?
He still behaved like the childish and girlish Elisha I knew He was now even more pronounced, a gay than he was before leaving for the states… I could not fathom why a young gentleman would simply choose a path of stupidity. Well his choices and none of my business. Yet I could not help it but ask…

” Eli? How do you cope with peer pressure and all that stuff?

He glanced at me and sipped his coffee then crossed his leg( the normal lady style) His eyelids and lashes had been trimmed , he even applied mascara , I sighed and waited for him to say something.

” I would say– I’m getting used to being the way I am. I can’t change it for anybody”

” You can bet on it,” I said ” Remember how uncle nearly cut off your deek because he caught you wearing a skirt in the bathroom… What were you even thinking then?”

He gulped down the hot coffee and spilled the rest on the table. I laughed and felt sorry for him.

” Seriously ? Don’t remind me of how evil papa was ”

His dad was evil indeed , the twin brother of saddam Hussien who projected into the black part of the earth. He was the pure definition of strictness and injury infliction and I remembered him for the scar he left on my arm . I glanced at it one more time before continuing..

” I wonder how your male friends and associates view your personality ”

He said he had none except his intimate friend. I pinpointed it to be his” lovers..” But then he had a lot of female friends and during his stay in America he was always hanging out with the ladies…

He was not yet to tell me why he came all the way from Eleme junction down to GRA that night, just to see me. I kept quiet and listened.

” Its just what I see as being able to express myself—” He blabbed when suddenly his phone rang .

” Yes ,.. Mimi?….. Who ? You don’t mean it… Aawwnnn I’m so sorry for her right now… Where is she ? At your house … But she could have gone home to her parents .. She is still in shock? Ok I understand…..”

I was confused and got bothered myself. I sensed danger and I was eager to know what was happening …

” What is it, Elisha talk to me—”

He waved at me and finally hanged the line. His face became red all over and that was the effect of the cream he used. He reluctantly dropped the phone on the cushion.

“I have to leave.. I have to go home now– in short I have to be somewhere”

“So soon? But you have not even told me why you visited.”

” Some other time , brother ‘

I asked him to tell me the need for the sudden rush..why was he so worried ?

” Talk to me”

” Brother Andy, ” He began ” My friend Kate just had a fight with her husband.She just found out a bitter truth about him. Turns out he had a daughter with another woman …. Its nothing you should worry about”

Did he just say that I shouldn’t worry ? He was indeed joking and I couldn’t blame him , he knew not of my intentions towards Katherine. This seemed like the perfect time and Gabe had finally screwed up, just like I expected…

” Where is she now?

“At Mi—wait , why are you so concerned about her ? He asked me with a suspicious look in his eyes.

I went home to my parents and they accepted me with open arms. If there was any place I ‘d be safe, it was my father’s house.

Mama burst into tears when I narrated everything that had happened to me in Gabe’s cruel hands , she rained curses on him and even the very ground he stepped on.

” He had the guts to cause you so much pain.. The Chi that I serve. Chukwu Okike ( God the creator ) will surely avenge all the evil he has done to you.”

All the while , Father said nothing . He was silent and although he wasn’t happy about how I discovered the truth , he still had doubts . He was not yet convinced and given the fact that the proof was still in words and not on paper with ink , the matter was very much debateable to him.

” Kathy ” He asked after Mama had capsided her wailings .

” Yes Papa”

” Did you catch him red handed in the act of sleeping with another woman?

His muse was confined to seriousness .

I thought about his question and replied the honest thing I knew. To me it was proof enough.

” No sir, but I saw a picture of –”

” A picture ,?? A picture can be manipulated . Kate you can’t stay here. You have to get back into your husband’s house.” He said blankly and scratched his hair furiously.

Mama intervened on my behalf and refused to let me go back to that monster. She complained of how thin I had grown and how it was very emotionally unstable for David to live with us in such environment.

” I don’t know your plans, my dear ” Father retorted ” well , hehh! To me there is no logic in what you have just done. I’m telling you to fight for your man, else another woman will just take him away right before your eyes, then it will be too late ”

Mama was not happy with his conclusion. She took my bags and put them in the room, after which she came back and sat with her arms crossed.

“No one is leaving or going back anywhere.. If he wants you back, he should come for you. ”

” Nneka , listen to me ” Father began again ” I’m a man o, and thank God am not like other men. Staying away from her husband will only push him further away into the arms of the other lady.”

” Did it stop him from having affairs outside the marriage when Kate was still with him ? Mama asked.

I went to my working place after days of absence . Mrs Edeh, my superior was very understanding when I explained everything to her, in essence, she equally gave me three days off to gather my act together. I was at home one afternoon when Yvonne and Gabriel’s mum came to to visit. Maxwell drove them in a Toyota hiase model car, I hoped they were not here to preach me the good news about how loving and kind Gabriel was, I had almost heard enough.

” Mama!” Yvonne said after I gave them seats in the parlour. She obviously saw something in me or on me, One of both possibilities was glaring in her eyes as she fixed her gaze steadily at my bump.

” Yes I’ve seen it too ” Gabe’s mum said.

She came towards me and sat comfortably , while my mother came out from the kitchen with a tray of tea for the visitors, it was breaking heat and steam when she placed them on the centre table.

” My dear … I know my son isn’t perfect , but please don’t purnish your unborn baby for the sake of its father’s mistakes . The little one deserves better ”

” Yes Kate, I’m begging you..” Yvonne seconded her mother.

She elbow tapped her husband to say something , however he was less concerned or maybe loss of words. He sipped his tea and stared at everyone in the room guilt showing on his face as he too, was a man.

” Cupcakes? ” Yvonne hit him again. ” Maxwell say something ”

” Uhm– Kate you have to fight for your right..besides you are his legal wife. Its not wise to back down now , You just gave him a better reason to justify his actions” Maxwell said in the most matured way ever.

I looked round the room hoping to see the culprit in question , to see the gulilt on his face and have him tell everyone how terribly he had been lying to me all along. And I thought he loved me. I guess I was wrong , he never cared , not for me , at least.

Andrew.

I was supposed to be a manager , an overseer, a CEO, but I became a waiter overnight.

Everyday , I would wait for Kate at her working place. I wanted to speak with her , it was so urgent and time was on the run. It had to be now or never .

I somewhat got discouraged after days of futile expeditions. Even her son didn’t attend school anymore and I guessed they had traveled to their hometown.

” Dammit–” I landed my fist into the steering wheel having lost all hope. I wanted to beat time as it ticked away.

Just then , I saw a lady and indeed she would help me get Kate’s new address.

I came out of the car and walked straight to her , she was wearing a camisore suit and her hair was parked in the most decent way ever. I stopped her in her tracks as she was about to open her car’s door.

” Excuse me Madam” I said while touching her softly with caution.

” Yes ? Of what help may I be to you ?

” please don’t be offended, I’m an agent for stock exchange and I have been searching for a particular client whom I believe works in this school ” I said pointing towards the school’s gate.

The lady was surprised ” Is she a teacher?I mean , in this school?

” Nope, she actually drives the bus”

” Oh … Kate !! ”

I was happy at last ,I was obviously getting somewhere.

” You are an agent right ? For stock exchange ,” She questioned my authenticity ..

I nodded .

” But I don’t see any identity card proving such”

I chuckled a smile , realising that I just got busted . I had to pull this one off, and not worsen the situation. I searched my pockets like I had forgotten something. I acted swiftly and immediately and said

” Well , let’s say I was assigned this duty on a short notice and in the rush forgot my I.D . The situation is extremely important”

She didn’t buy my lie, it was glaringly obvious in shinning salt and silver that I never made it away with lying, I was always caught in the act. Not funny at all.

She refused to give me any info pertaining Kathey’s whereabout , I was devastated and almost downthroden.
The only people who could still help me were Mimi and Elisha/ Only if they weren’t so strong headed to do so. Even Mimi had denied me access into her house on the night I went there to see Kate.

I left the school and drove downtown to get a nice hot coffee just to cool off.
I walked into the coffee shop and sat quietly into a corner, then the bells on the door dangled as another customer came through .I looked and saw a lady, who was the next thing to beautiful.

Everyone in the hall glanced as she walked majestically drawing attention to her self. She wore a bright coloured milky tank top with bluestone washed jeans and boy was she stunning ?

I gulped down saliva and called on the waiter to take my orders , seeing that she came right towards my table.

” Excuse me can I seat here ? The lady asked me .

” Sure ” I blurted out.

The waiter left and came back almost immediately , holding a capechino latte with straw berry flavoured cream in the mixture.

” Make that two please” The lady said taking off her sunshade.

” First time in the hot south ? I stated the convo.

She smiled and introduced herself, her soft arms stretched forward and shook mine calmly.

” No.. And the name is Kemi– Kemi Joe”

I felt so lucky to have met this wonderful lady on a day like this, when Kate seemed out of reach, She immediately took away my worries and I felt so easy with her, it was deep chemistry and adrenaline. Maybe she was the soul mate I’d been aching for… Maybe Kate and I were not meant for each other , maybe!! And then I realised that tommorow will be even better than today as I just couldn’t wait.

She fixed her eyes on my scar and it pierced deep into my soul leaving me all cramped up inside. she tried to touch the skin surface where the scar had taken up its everlasting position as a reminder of what I suffered in the past, my uncle’s hardness and brutality; his babric attitudes towards me and why uptil date, his death remained a mystery to everyone else but not to me.
She sipped her coffee, it steamed of nice aromas that were indeed aluring to my senses, then her fingers came forward , every pretty phalanges combined in a single mission : to touch my scar. Kate had never dared touching it, but maybe she did, I couldn’t tell.

I withdrew my arms and pulled down the sleeves , I questioned the fearlessness of this new lady, she was outspoken and I enjoyed every bit of her convo but I won’t let her spoil my happiness.

” you don’t wanna touch it . Its gonna bite you ” I said hoping she’d not ask questions.

” Oh don’t be silly now ” Kemi said ” I just want to —You know what?

” Spill it out ” I said .

” I have never seen anyone with such a scar that looks so– so scarrish ”

I turned my eyes from one corner to another, looked at her and couldn’t take my head off the fact that she just fabricated a new English word , I was in for an adventure with this lady. . I broke the silence ,after a siren bellowed past the streets and jolted me out of my thoughts.

” So tell me, Kemi . Why are you so inquisitive?
I could sense trouble .

” I have to admit, you are one hell of a mystery box and I would love to crack that hard knot you put up as defence ”

” Really? .. Its good to know. Hence, we should take this further than just here, I could do things you obviously won’t start to imagine, things that are so kinky and yet surprising in nature” I said and bit my lips.

She drew her head nearer and whispered something deep into my ears, something you don’t get to hear so often.

” Don’t tell anyone , Andrew this is a secret between us, I’m so wet down there right now. So wet, baby”

She growled like a tiger into my ear and almost bit it off.
We immediately made way to my car , things moved so fast that I forgot if I had paid for the coffee. I hoped someone would draw my attention to it . We started off right inside the car , I ignited the car engine and drove off immediately to a nearest motel .

Her arms smooched my back as she engaged me in a lip lock while I found the lock of the door with my fingers. Eventually we were in, the door gave way for us and not so long, she undid the entire vertical line of my shirt and dived for my belts, she tossed it to an arm length chair.

” Oh God– Oh my– ” I mumbled as the tension was building up to an unbearable level.

She reached for my hard erected anatomy and did magical things down there.

” Oh dear– what the f–”

I was on the road to ecstasy and total c—-x , I refused to let her stop even though we just met that fateful day. I jerked suddenly , not because I wanted to ejack but because a touch on my skin drove shivers down my spine.Her fingers glaced through it, It brought back memories I wanted to forget: Memories that haunted me , pain was the theme song.

” Stop– stop , I — just stop ” I shouted and pushed her so hard she hit her head on the chair behind.

” I’m sorry , if I did anything wrong” Kemi’s voice sounded ambivalent.

” Never , I mean never in your life touch my scar again”

” What’s so important about the scar? And why are you yelling at me? Do you think I’m some cheap love peddler? In short this was a mistake , I shouldn’t be here . mtcheww. I actually thought you were a gentle man ”

She jolted up from the floor and grabbed her hand bag , I pulled up my pants and held her arms.

” Don’t leave, I’m sorry– I over reacted . Maybe its the heat or something , I’m just , I just had a bad day , but please don’t touch the scar ,,try and avoid it . mmm?

” Tell me why, ” She retorted in a loud but calm voice .

” Shhhhhh! Soon, but for now don’t touch it ”

Then my phone rang,
I pushed Kemi away gently and grabbed the ringing phone on the table.

” Yea — Andy here, who is it? “. I asked the unknown caller

” Andy ” Kate’s voice echoed ” let’s meet, we need to talk. I can’t tell you on the phone , let’s meet, please”

I buttoned my shirts and pulled up my pants. What was so important , she wanted to meet in in person?

” uhm,–OK , where are you ?

” I’ll text you the address” She replied .

I hang up the line and looked at Kemi’s face , it was not so bright now and she wanted to know what was going on.

” Is she the one? The one, you – where are you going? You are not leaving me here are you?

” I’ll explain everything later. I will call you OK but , right now , I have to go” I said and dashed out of the room .

Gabriel

She waited for an answer to her question , I had none for her. I could see how she breamed with anger through her eyes. My decision was final on the matter, I was not going to beg anyone.

” Mama, I’m not begging Kate to come back to this house , she left with her two legs and most return with them”

” You are such a foolish boy . This is not how I trained you . You have grown up to be just like your father, you know what He did and you simply followed his footsteps. You abandoned your legal wife for some cheap harlot and you call that being man enough”

I hated to admit to her that Dami was not my mistress and her daughter wasn’t mine. Instead I let the sleeping dog, lay quietly.

” Mama, to be honest with you, Kate and I, in short mama, I don’t love her anymore and I know what I mean because– ” I paused “But why Mama? Why are you people making this thing difficult for me? You know, Kate left me . And you know I did everything possible to make her happy , but she left even when she knew that it was not a wise decision ”

I barely saw it coming but Mama gave me a brain resetting slap , the one that drove shivers down the spine.

” Keep quiet, ” She said in Ikwere language ( our native tongue)

” What do you know about love? You think its easy to just eject your wife and jump over to another family, you think its so easy to change wife like clothes? Well guess what I won’t accept that woman , no matter what she must have done to make you throw away your love for Kate’

We were not getting anywhere with the arguments and I wanted it to stop .I sat down and gently carresed my cheeks where she had landed the slap, if it were to be someone else, I would have given her the beating of her life.

” Mama” I began ” If you truly want my happiness , then you will have to accept the new wife I am bringing home and her daughter too-”

” Gabe, your wife is pregnant ”

I felt my heart quicken and the pace doubled. That was not the news I wanted to hear at a dreaded hour and time .

” What did you say? ”

” You heard me loud and clear , believe me , that child she is carrying is the only reason why she hasn’t filed a divorce paper against you . I can bodly you tell you that she has lost any atom of love in her heart ,for you. So don’t think she is on the loosing end, my dear its you who will loose ”

” What happens if she losses the baby? I asked without thinking twice .

” I don’t know, but just know I won’t forgive you, if you allow her slip out of your hands just like that ”

I engrossed myself into deep thoughts and looked up to the wall clock , time was ticking very fast and I was behind schedule . I had reasons to doubt if the baby , Kate was carrying ,if it was really mine . It could have been Andrew’s .

I hoped he would come, after texting him the address. An old church cathedral near my locale. The wind summerslamed into a pack of debris behind the church and an explosion of leaves and debris occured in the air . I feared the worst and hoped that I was doing the right thing, Mimi had told me how badly she was disturbed by Andy, only so I could meet him.

I had to end the whole drama , I couldn’t allow him suffer, he deserved better than me. My son needed me to be strong and i couldn’t be that strong when someone else worried about me.

At the entrance of the church , a car pulled over and raise dust. Andrew alighted and was as energetic as ever, he wore his normal packet shirt and chinos plain trousers, he was quite fabulous to say the least.

He walked down the aisle and took off his sunshades ” Why are we meeting here, I thought it would have been a restaurant or something?

” It had to be here ” I sniffed and sat on a wodden bench at the church’s left corner.

” Well , won’t you say something? ” I asked .

He suddenly laughed .

” What’s so funny ” I became annoyed and yet couldn’t help it but laugh too ” Are you OK? I asked

” You have grown very skinny ” He sat down and rubbed his palms together . ” why are you running, Kate ? You should face your problems , not run from them ”

” What’s that part about me being very skinny ? ”

I hit him casually on his shoulders and his face brightened with a smile on every angle..

” Why did you call? He grabbed my arms ” I’ve been aching to see and talk to you”

I withdrew my palms and began ” You see that’s why, that’s why I wanted to see you in person- ” I said before he cut me short of the words .

” Whatever it is you are facing right now, we can solve it together , tell me. Okay ”

I faced my head down and tears broke out from every duct in my eyes . My life was in ruin and I couldn’t help but think of Andy as just a friend , we weren’t supposed to go beyond that barrier.. He rubbed my back softly and my spine became electrified .

” Do you still feel anything for him ? , He asked ” Kate, all men are not the same, I know you have a son with him who is six, but you are still very young, don’t hurt yourself by sticking around on a pretended love–”

I raised my head and said ” I’m with his child, and I can’t leave just like that-”

I was about to complete the sentence when a he got up instantly.

” We are done here”

I became confused , then I regretted why I told him in the first instance.

“Andy wait ” I ran after him and grabbed his left arm.

He suddenly jerked and looked me in the eye. I asked him why he was eager to leave,without saying anything.

” I don’t know what to say Kate, I honestly don’t know what to say”

” Tell me it will be fine, tell me its going to be OK, you are my friend right? Don’t leave me now that I need you more. Please Andy, say something”

He scoffed and released his arms from my grip, then, I saw the reason why he had jerked when I touched him: A huge scar on his left arm, just near the elbow joint..

I didn’t ask questions about it, even though it was very tempting to do so.

” You see Kate, that’s where the problem lies, I’m not comfortable being just friends with you , I have waited for a long time. If it can’t happen so I’d better try out my other options. Just know that whatever you need , you can always call me and I will provide it, if I can”

He wasnt making sense to me, he wanted something and I just couldn’t figure out what it was.

” Tell me what you want? What do you want from me Andy ? Please tell me,because I’m tired of all these suspense and tension. ” I shook his shoulder furiously .

” I want you ” He looked deep into my eyes, his dark brown eyeballs radiated cosmic energy, the type I’d never seen before.

I touched my abdomen and rubbed it carefully ” But I’m carrying—”

He cut in ” What if you loose it ? His eyes fixed into mine.

” You don’t mean abortion , do you ? I was surprised at his statement .

“I mean with the stress you have put yourself into, what if you loose it through miscarriage, God forbid, but eventually it happens? Will you still think its right to stay with him , when you don’t love him anymore”

I went backwards and trembled at his statement , why would he want me to lose my pregnancy? He was up to somthing and I couldn’t place a finger on it. Just then, a bird flew into bell tower of the church and hit the rope, making the bell report with loud succession of rings.

Gabriel ,

” So when will the final blow of the plan, happen? Dr Johnson asked me .

He was willing to do anything just to have a revenge at Dami. I thought he was foolish or maybe he enjoyed scheming plots that were not going to work.

I laughed .

I fondled with the pen on his table, at the centre of his office and we sat opposite each other with my legs crossed.

” Do you think I enjoy pretending to her ? I asked him

” Well, that’s the more reason we have to act fast ” He concluded

I laughed again .

“Honestly, why do you think I’m so foolish to give in to your plan .Now that I need her most ?”

” My plan is simple, like we agreed, you just pretend that its OK with you and her, enjoy her wealth and encourage her to keep coming here for shots of inducers to alleviate her hallucinations, the drugs which are in the inducers will gradually weaken her cells, and before a year she’d be dead. But now I want to fast track things—”

” Are you out of your mind ? I cut in.

His grudge against her , I had no idea but if there was any toll for serial killing ,Mr Johnson would have taken the lead on the chart.

” You can’t back out now! You have come this far with the plan and I think we should skip the whole thing and just do away with her.”

” Johnson, the main reason why I did accept your plan in the first place was to secure my child and wife’s future, but that didn’t work out for me . In fact I lost them and currently I don’t even know where they are.”

” But you have full access to Miss Akehinde’s wealth and assets , So why do you still need her?

I nodded and gulped down the wine in the glass cup which was on the table. I wanted to have riches and power ,but I was not a murderer.

” You see, Mr Johnson . I believe in second chances , I don’t know what grudge you have with Damilola but I want to make it clear to you that I will have no part in your sly game.”

” That’s not the agreement ” he blurted out.

” There was none in the first place”

” Are you black mailing me? He asked with surprise written all over him ” Remember , you made her sign a contract, right here in this office and now you have her wealth and assets , you think you can relegate me as the bad worm” his hands tapped the table top.

” An act , I regret up till this very minute I’m talking to you ” I clutched my fingers so tight .

I frowned and got up to leave his office when he said something that was inaudible . I twisted the door’s handle and was barely outside in the hall when he said

” You are making a wrong decision , Mr Egedege.That woman is evil , she is smarter than you think her to be”

I stopped and turned, faced him , nanaobots of anger went down my spine and I had to unleash them.

” I don’t care about her, I don’t care if she is the devil’s advocate, I don’t give a d–n about your plan. So you can as well shove it down your a-s. I only care about her daughter and you don’t expect me to make her an orphan at such a tender age. And let me warn you. Yes let me sound it as a warning . if you so much as speak to anyone about this conversation ”

I paused to allow my conviction sink deep into his mind.

” Then count yourself among the dead , ‘cos you will be a dead man. Have a nice day”

I banged the door loudly that everyone in the reception hall thought it was a gunshot.

I pulled the car over and entered the lonely house, I’d been a bit shaken up but I had no idea what it was. I was feeling guilt but the silence in the house tormented me even more.

I remembered my last conversation with Johnson and what I had said to him,

” Then count yourself among the dead, ‘cos you’ll be a dead man…”

I realised what loosing Kate had done to me, it unveiled the true side of me. Why did I let her go in the first instance? It was her choice ,so I cant blame her for choosing such.

I thought about my son David, what kind of Father had I become to him? What lessons did he learn from my actions?

I sat deep into the cushion and looked round the silent house. I Poured myself a glass of wine and paced up and down the parlour.

”Hello, Yvonne? ” i said into the phone after dialing my sister’s number.

‘yes…How is mama holding up? Maxwell? Is he fine? ” I sat down and ran my fingers round the cup’s tip.

” I know she is still mad at me…Kate will come back ,trust me” I got up and looked outside.

A car had stopped, and I knew exactly who it was. What was she doing here?

” No ,David is fine with his grandparents, he cant stay here with me alone..” I continued ” I’ll find time to visit — Ok for your sake , I’ll try to get them back.”

I moved outside .” Let me call you back, yea. I have something to attend to” . I hung up the line.

She walked straight to my doorstep and smiled.

” what are you doing here?’ I barked. ” you are not supposed to be here”

She smiled again.

She came closer, and her sunshades went off revealing her pretty eyes. Why? She so loved tempting me at every slightest opportunity, what had I done to deserve this purnishment?

” Gabe, we are family now” She touched my chin ” this house is too lonely for you, why not come over to- ”

I frowned and she noticed it, then said

” I know how it feels . To be left alone, ” Her voice became romantic ” to sleep all night in the cold sheets all by yourself, lets make it easier for us. You know what I mean. Go home to us, we are waiting for you”

I laughed.

I had no idea, but sentences like that started to get on my tickle bone. She hadnt seen anything yet, only time will tell.

I dragged her arms and opened her car door, ” Get in and get outta here” .

She struggled and tried to break free. ” Gabe, what are you doing? Let go off my–please stop. You know how much I love you ” her voice became pathetic.

I slammed the door, put my head through the window and looked at Dami in the eye

I stood there at the entrance, silent as she reeled the book of judges into my ear.

With those words, she zoomed off , raised debris and dust leaving the atmosphere in a displaced state in the ecosystem.

I couldn’t believe my ears anymore , his words hit hard onto my skull and I had to take it as a mistake. He was not serious, he definaltely was not . He tried to come closer and grasp my arm, he probably saw how terrified I was. I least expected such from him.

” Please , understand me here “He tried to touch my cheek, which I dodged. ” Kate, don’t get me wrong here, I was only pointing out an instance of what could happen if –”

” it was a very stupid one ” I said and moved even backwards ” You were joking right?. Like, what kind of a person wishes a pregnant lady, a miscarriage ? Are you for real? I just hope you didn’t mean a word of it”

It ate deep into my soul , and that was the first time Andy said something really foolish . I picked it as a slip of tongue, he wouldn’t even think about hurting me not more ,wishing me evil.

He closed in the gap between us , his fresh breathe and perf did magical things on me, which I couldn’t explain

” I’m just a bit stressed out- believe me, I am here to protect you and not scare you ” his voice became calm and he continued ” Kate, I don’t like seeing you suffer like this, it hurts me, and truth be told , I will stick with any decision you take”

I sat down and looked at my wrist watch, I had to leave, the discussion was getting me nauseated and Andy bluffed even more. If he loved me truly , then he’d be matured enough to know that I carried a living soul inside me , not something to make instances of death, with.

” I’m disappointed, Andy ” I said ” But its good to know you still care. ”

I got up and dusted my skirt’s tip and behind, made for the door and he followed closely ,his arms trailed my back and he touched me on the shoulder.

I sat quietly in the restaurant’s corner ,gazed at Elisha as he was telling the dark skinned girl what he would have. We had gone out that eve to spend sometime together and escape the reality of the problems that faced us. It was supposed to be fun time but I was confused and felt awkward.

He turned and faced me, empathy showed all over his face and his arms gently brushed my shoulders.

Elisha frowned with disgust ” We were actually talking about cutting off your ears and replacing them with antennas . Nonsense!!!”

I laughed my ribs out until they started to ache. The joke was unexpected.

Mimi waved her fingers ” Whatever ! ”

He nearly turned red with anger “Kate , did you hear what she just said?, can you–”

I laughed out so loud that I forgot that I had been sad some minutes ago. These guys were hilarious and so funny.

” Mumu ” Elisha blurted out after casting a prolonged gaze at her .

” I don’t blame you , scarly wag ”

“Its alright , please” I cut in ” You guys should stop , we are in the public-” I barely finished the statement when I saw her.

oh my God it was her , I coudnt believe my eyes , It was the little girl I ‘d had seen in a picture with Gabriel.
My resolve changed as my mood became worse again, I looked at her and the two women that sat with her,both with their backs facing us.Their table was across the restaurant hall . one of the ladies had to be her mother.

” Kay ? ” Elisha said , he noticed something ” you look like you ‘ve seen a ghost.”

” Eli, someone will become a ghost today, by the time I’m through with her”….I said and carefully got up from my seat.

When I pushed the door open, I expected someone to pour me hot water or even a sackload of gabbage. I sighed a relief , when none of the above happened, at least not yet.The thought was loud in my head.

I had called Yvonne to pick up David from his grandparents house , I didnt want to go there , not at that moment, given the circumstances of Kate’s disagreement with me. It was better to let things cool off a bit .

I wanted to see my son, but it had to be in Maxwell’s house, and I hoped for the best but prepared for the worst, just in case someone loosed it and poured me a pot of stew.

The sitting room was quiet and I thought a mutiny or coup d’etat was about to occur and my head was the state of emergency for the process. I was afraid though, then suddenly

” Daddy!! ” Came David’s voice as he rushed in from a room adjacent the parlour.

I was so glad to see him. The joy in my heart leaped to hundred degrees , when I launched him into the air repeatedly and he laughed and smiled at every dive.

I stopped to assimilate his words ” Really? Did she say so?

He shook his head in dissparoval, and I became disappointed, so how did he know she had missed me?

I put him down and looked him in the eye ” Now David, I want you to be strong for daddy, ” I stroked his hair ” I want you to look after mummy , while , I’m away ,OK. Can you do that for me?

” That’s my soldier . OK where is ?- ” I was about to ask him of Yvonne when I saw her standing at the corridor ,arms akimbo .

“I envy you both ” She touched her abdomen ” I wish God had already blessed me with even one”

It had been almost five years of marriage for her ,without an issue and I felt it too, as it ached me internally.

” Don’t worry ” I hugged her briefly ” you will soon have yours. where is Mama?

She told me that Mama was in the Kitchen and Maxwell was in his room.

I looked at David ” OK , little man run along , go and play. Your aunt and I want to have a word ” He was about to move ” here , I bought you snacks ”

I gave them to him and he was so happy . He kissed me on the cheek when I bent down a little and disappeared into the big house.

” Gabe, your son will suffer badly if you don’t mend your marriage ” Yvonne started when we took seats in the living room.

I scratched my head a little and looked at my wrist watch, somehow , it felt like everyone wanted me to be perfect, but overlooked the fact that I was human and also fallible.

” Yvonee ” I began ” It’s not as easy as you think , things have gotten real messy and comp-”

I paused when Mama came out from the Kitchen through the dinning room . She held a spoon in her hands and I thought she had me in mind, maybe she wanted to konk me with it ,because our previous argument was so rough.

” Good evening Ma” I greeted in Ikwere.

She shrugged and replied, gave me a prolonged look and dashed back into the kitchen , she hadn’t said much, it was very unlike her to do so.

” The situation is very complicated ” I continued

” How bad ? Gabe , I hate to admit this to you but I just have to. I don’t know what your plans are , the truth is that you will end up hurting a lot of people if you choose to split up with your wife. Not only your son will be hurt but me also ;Maxwell ; Mama( especially mama- ) And don’t overlook Kate’s parents too, they are already hurt by your actions . Don’t make it worse”

I kept silent and let the words sink into me.

The airconditioned atmosphere heightened my suspense and tension, I practically boiled deep down with anger. I had been praying for a day like this to come, for me to unleash the hatred and pain in my heart. No Jupiter would stop me from doing what I had up my sleeves. Ol’ boy!! Karma is a b!tch.

” Are you sure its her ? ” Mimi said ” Wait!” she pulled me back ” What if you are wrong?

” I know its her. I am certain of it” I replied.

I tried to move, Mimi blocked my path and held me tightly , her hands cluthed onto my shoulders and she pushed me back a little. She knew what I had in mind, and tried to avoid a disaster from taking place.we had to be sure.

“Take it easy Kate ” She sighed then turned round ” at least, lets be sure ,before we act”

I had heard enough . I couldn’t get my anger constrained anymore

” Its her, I’m very sure of the face. I can’t easily forget it.”

I wanted to confront them immediately .I knew the little girl was Funmi. There was no doubt to it and the thought drove nanobots of anger down my spine.

It nearly went off. People tried to separate us. Fight had already ensued . I wouldn’t let her break free. She threw a punch . I hit her on the temple with my elbow. She jerked and struggled.

” Kemi , do something ” she cried for help.

Her friend tried to help. Mimi and Elisha pounded her with blows on the back. They pulled her to a corner and gang beat the life out of her.

Damilola grabbed a bottle on the floor. She charged towards me. I dodged. She accidentally hit her own daughter.

I thought it to be an illusion, until I checked the camera footage again. It was really Kemi and she stood helplessly at the gate . I had given her my address but I didn’t think she’d stop by so early, we just met .
I pushed a button from the control room to let her in, and went out to the living room. It didn’t take long before she came through the front door.

” You look like hell ” I said .I noticed her facial expressions.

” I am so angry right now. I feel like assasinating that witch called Kate” she blurted out in anger.

I moved back a little and looked her in the face..

” Kate ??

” Yea,Kate . You know her?

I had no idea if it was my Kate. It could have been anyone

” Don’t worry” I said and embraced her” there are thousands of Kate’s out there. It could have been anyone”

” This one is really crazy ” She retorted.

Then,she relaxed on my shoulders and the chemistry between us grew even more intense ,This was more than attraction, it was something greater and I could feel it deep down in my bones.

She pulled back and clutched her fist together .

” This so far from over ” she said ” Its very far–very far from over”.

I became impatient as my thumbs raked down my trouser lines , a bit near the pockets .Her eyes fixed into mine and the tension was unbearable. I knew this was the pivot point, it was either Kate or Dami. One had to go.

Naturally , Kate was the first and deserved me more*

But I wondered, what had prompted them into a muscle tussle, which gave Funmi a bandaged head. I had been to the hospital and her critical condition left me with few choices. I was confused, Dami did worse than helped matters .She had threatened to call the police, if I hadn’t left.

” why the fuvck am I even doing this ? Is it for the cash or the love? I realised bitterly that I wanted both. I wanted Kate, and i would pay any price for Dami’s wealth*

” Kate, you went too far, what were you thinking? ” I shot back at her, some seconds after she put forward her part of the story.

She had explained every detail with precision ,but her story conflicted Dami’s tale on the issue about Funmi’s head attack. Dami had said , Kate intentionally shattered the bottle on Funmi’s skull .

” which sides have you taken?, Don’t tell me you’d believe that lady’s story.” She said and flung an object at me.( as usual) ” you can leave now. ” Her voice increased ” Get out!! We are done here.”

” Which Love? She asked with a grin ” don’t call me that, that love you knew… Its probably dead now”

It hurt me to hear her say those words. Seven years ago,it wouldn’t mean much, but now it wrenched my heart. When our love was the only thing that mattered most to me, our hearts had been united into a single beat, if she smiles, I was happy, if she had been angry , I took a turn down the moody lane . Now it was different, I am sad, she is mad and yelling out. What happened ? I qurreied myself. Her reactions made me realise : I had it all ,but I couldnt eat my cake…Either ways I had to decide.

I went nearer and grabbed her waistline meticulously.

What was it? My mind played dirty games on me.

” Was she worth it ? Huh? I bet her pu%sy was a gold mine and you couldn’t resist being a dutiful gold digger . You fool” she yelled out.

My eyes went to the deem lampstand in the room ,it added intense romance to the situation. Eventually, we’d get there.

She jammed the door behind her and broke down into tears. She poured out her heart- Mine bled in pain.
I left in shame and pity, speechless and humiliated.

I opened my car and claimed unto the seat comfortably, or so I thought. Many years ago , the dream of washing a car’s body was farfetched. Now ,I owned one but I paid the ultimate price for it.

Then it was time for the unthinkable. I picked up my mobile and dialed a number .

” An account under the name: David Egedege, my son. I opened it last week.. I’m afraid, Klanp, ” My voice cracked “my nightmares have tuned into reality and are after me in daylight”

” Nothing, its personal ” I wiped a tear that wandered in my eyelid ” Just do the transfer ASAP”

James klanp carefully told me what was involved to make such a transfer work and concluded by checking my account balance ,but then his initial content changed as he reeled out terrible news . He was certain . When he was done, I became part confused and part –heart broken.

” Can’t you solve it ? I asked when I nearly smashed the windscreen in anger, it hid my inner brokenness( the anger , I’ mean)

” Who would do this? I asked more angered .

I froze internally , my chest muscles contracted at the name mentioned. Things took a wrong turn this time around, but I had to decide, and it had to be quick.

The shower ran . Every drop romanced my body as would a legion of demons exploring my skin to possess it… The water synchronized my emotions ,it created a bombshell of adrenaline. My heart beat raced .I ran my fingers across my left arm, the touch shocked me ,it flashed memories.

The night wind howled and I could hear a whisper of its movement, even from a mile away. It was those kind of nights in the harmattan when, people either committed suicide or they get killed by even fearless humans.The pattern was always the same- the strong preyed on the weak and the food chain never grew out of supply.

I stood there at her doorway and my mind flew to different dimensions.Why not end it here, and now? What’s holding you back? This lady had become a thorn in your flesh!!. I just couldn’t, I wasn’t a murderer, and I won’t become one.

” I knew you’d come back! ” Damilola said, she smiled and drank from her cup , crossed her legs and flickered the TV set with the control in her arm.

” Tell me Gabe” she continued and stood up, she came forward, ” Do you think am stupid?

* maybe ! I thought and clutched my fist behind me, ready to land a punch into her pretty face when she was within range.

” Obviously you thought, I was mad. Fine, I had hallucinations and I saw — ” She paused and went back.

Dammit !!! Just a few inches away, she was lucky, I loosened my fist.

I froze internally and my blood rushed like a tap which has lost its handle and gone wild. The facts were all falling in place, every tiny piece started merging into a clearer picture. I wanted to grab her neck and break it into a thousand pieces. She could also have a hand in his ordeal, maybe she was right after all, but who made an attempt on my life?

” Why would you see him? What connections do you have with Tayo? He–” I said with hidden anger , when she interrupted

I went foward and grabbed her on the neck, squeezed it tightly and I breamed with anger ” Why don’t I start by killing you first,then he comes next . The both of you have ruined my life… ”

” I’m not– uh, st–op, you are… ” She groaned with pain.

“Dami, I’m not here to listen to crap,.. Why did you freeze my account? Why the fvck are you toiling with me?

She gasped for air, and hit me hard on the shoulders, the cup in her hand fell to the floor and shattered.

Someone came running into the living room. It was her maid, Bisi and she screamed.

She told me it wasnt possible, even in pain she still had pride, and gave me options, I had to take it or leave it.

She looked at me with a red eye, bloodshot and angry.
I raised my arm up and threw a punch in mid air, but I paused and she hid her face in fear.

Good , I scared the poo out of you. The thought was self rewarding.

I bolted into the night with my car and drove all the way home. The next morning, I was up and kicking even before the co£k crowed, I had seen it all and change was about to occur, I realised that wealth without the ones you loved and cared for, was hell on earth . I had to settle things with my wife, I went straight to her house .

” Mama , where is Kate? I asked Ma Nneka as I climbed out of the vehicle. She nearly took to her heels when she saw me ,she thought I wanted to harm her.

” Please , its important I find her. Her life might be– Mama please ,this is serious, I know I’m not the best son in law,but I’ve realised my mistakes. Trust me on this, I’ve changed”

She stared blankly at me and sat down in the chair at their veranda. She heaved a sigh of relief.

” She just left now, ” Ma Nneka replied.

” Where? Please talk to me ” I was impatient.

” She went to pick up David from your sister’s house . Gabe , I hope nothing is wrong.why as you sweating like a sacrificial lamb? She asked ,noticing my energy.

I couldn’t explain anything at the moment, I wanted to settle issues with Kate. I had to tackle the problems squarely this time and it felt like my only chance to redeem my sins. If only I had listened to Johnson , this wouldn’t have escalated to where it was.

I thanked Mama for her info and catapulted again out of the compound, raising dust in the air. Time flew, and I had to battle against it ,to the finish line.

I embraced her like it was my last. I wiped the tears off my eyes and she assured me that things would be okay, no mater how bad it had become, even the wrong decisions we had taken– Good will always prevail.

Gabe’s mum was such a kind hearted woman and I wondered if Gabe had been adopted , he was entirely different from this woman. Well, he was a man with choices. I regretted having pushed him away though, but it served as a lesson for men of his kind : value what you have , not until you loose it.

I took my hand bag from the veranda rail, I kissed my son’s forehead and smiled at Yvonne who was under Maxwell arm as they stood at the porch — they looked so lovely together. Even without children of their own.

” Honey ” I turned to Dave ” I’ll be back soon OK. Be good to Grandma”

” Cant I come too? ” He asked squeezing his mouth

I smiled and brushed his hair gently. ” Go to your aunt, Yvonne.” I pushed him to move.

I turned but my heart wanted otherwise, it felt like that would be the last time I’d see him. I couldn’t let go of the feeling . why did I feel that way?

” Dave ,” I called him and ran back to the Porch , climbed and hugged him warmly , his head rested on my abdomen. Tears trickled down my cheeks.

I couldn’t understand why men were so wicked and heartless , I gave my life to my husband , I gave him a happy home, but in return he gave me sadness and pain.

Mama interfered “That’s OK, before you both make me cry ” she hugged us and unexpectedly, tears ran down her cheek, every drop was heartfelt and emotional.
Gabriel had really messed up, he messed up in the sight of man and God. Only a miracle would save him now.

I left reluctantly, and walked towards the bustop, I would be very busy at the market and Maxwell won’t have the patience to wait for me,he had other things to do. I advised him to stay with his family.

The cloud started to get dark and wind gushed from different angles , I wasnt generally afraid, so I quickened my steps to a nearby corner, to evade the dust haze that swam behind ,towards me. Zincs that were loose started rattlng- louder with every clank.

I fidgetted , but I was now left alone in the bare street, everyone had ducked from the unfavourable whether. It was a harsh harmattan morning as the dust was incredible

I took off my shoes and bolted ,but it was fast , whatever it was , it came running towards me, the ground shook under my feet, a rumble like something had fallen to the floor. All of a sudden it yanked itself into the air, right above my head.
It was a cat, which had probably been scared as the wind summer slammed into its hideout creating that rumbling sound ,of a trashcan falling to the ground.

” blasted cat!! ” I screamed out. ” Jesus !!!

I sighed a relief and put my shoes back on.
My heart pounded and I regained my breathe ” That was close ” . I took a turn to the left.

Suddenly, a strong arm covered my mouth, “”” mmmmm” I groaned out and struggled , I twisted and tried to break free..

My captors were three , all masked ,the first one brought out a phone

” Hello, Andy … Yes we have her, no problem boss”

He told his subordinates what the procedure was and I wept bitterly as no one was in sight to help me. They tied my mouth.

Slowly and painfully, they hit my head with a baton , and then again, and again, till my forehead broke and blood covered my face. My brain and memory lost communication with each other, numbers became words and words turned into Roman figures .

” mmm– huhuhhhhhargghhhh” I groaned in pain as they threw punches to my jaw, the first and the second, then two more after those.

The man that made the call, looked me into the eye, I was too weak to even look back. ” This will hurt” he touched my abdomen, and I jerked

” No please don’t, please* I was too weak to beg as my mind pleaded .

” Boom ” came a punch to my belly . Everything else paused ……

It reprogramed my internals and I coughed blood.

I saw my great grandparents as my life flashed through my eyes. I saw my entire family, and I saw Gabe.

The blood on her face had masked her completely , it took only her dark bunny- like eyes and her clothing to recognise her. ( meaning: if one hadn’t been sure, but no . I knew my wife’s figure , it was definitely her). Her hair was messy and sand mixed with dust crowned her once black jewel of hair strands.This was very painful for me to endure, I couldn’t imagine the depth of cluelessness and hopelessness that overwhelmed me at that crucial moment. What could I do?

” Kate.. Love , Its me ,I’m here —it Ga–” tears escaped my eyes.

Pull yourself together man* An inner voice said. But how could I ? My decisions and stupid actions had lead to my wife’s misfortune.

I bent down on both knees and held her neck round my arm,” Please hold on– just hang in there — dear God, Please! ” Pain in my already craoaked voice.

She tried to utter something, but the words wouldnt come out, her lips were soaked in blood and she coughed out even more.

” My ba– my baby, Gabe my— our baby, save our -” she muttered into my ears .

” I know, she will be fine”. I said trying to give her an assurance ,even though I was clueless of its gender or even if it were still alive.

” Please hold on , Kate. Just a little longer. ”

I got confused and and knew not what to do. I couldnt move her, or I was afraid it would cause more harm than good.

People started popping out of their various homes or holes where they had hid, I suddenly became paranoid and glanced through their faces with anger. It could have been any one of them: Maybe that grumpy looking guy in brown shirts, No, maybe that one eyed fellow with a walking stick? Or maybe still that old looking hag o’er there. Who could have done this hideous act?

” Kate tell me, who did this to you”

She whispered the name of the culprit and I clutched my fist in anger. I carried her in my arms and blood stained my sky blue shirt, dust was all over my arm.

A young man offered to help, he was in his twenties and I couldnt explain how happy I was at that moment.

” Oga , lemme drive the car, stay with her at the back seat. She is still breathing, and loneliness won’t do her any good. She needs you now, more than ever.”

Indeed I wanted nothing more than to be with my wife ,not just that moment but forever.

I opened the passengers seats’ door and carefully placed her on the seat, shut the door and went over to the other side to enter the vehicle.

The young lad ignited the the engine and we sped off.

There she lay on my laps and life gradually eluding her.

We arrived the general hospital ,the same one where Tayo had been all these while .And the thought of it, brought omen of bad luck.

Thankfully , Kate was still breathing, she was indeed a fighter and all along she kept muttering ” My baby,..my little baby”

The young man parked into a space, without thinking twice and he stopped the engine.

I hesitated to move, but his voice brought me back to reality,

” Bros, carry her down nah. Person go die here o!”

Kate’s heart pace reduced, and she gasped for air, I jumped out of the car and carried her like a mad man. My shirt was flying in different directions.

I ran into the ER ( Emergency room).

” Help o .. nurse , doctor? Anybody” I cried out. ” Norsuuuuuuuuuu!!!?
Dokkkuuuuu!!!! Help me o my wife is dying here”

In a blink. Emergency props became utilised to full potentials. The entire staff in the ER , abandoned other patients, which were too numerous to count .it was a busy day indeed.

” Code blue– code blue” A tall doctor with moustache announced.

An alarm went off , and started ringing in the entire hospital block.
Whatever that code meant, I knew it was the clarion call for all hands to be on deck. And it wasnt a code for good news.

They put her on a bed . They flattened the bed and removed all pillows. and pulled it into a corner, covered its surroundings with curtains. They plugged machines to wall sockets. More doctors came rushing from other wards.

” Check for pulse ? ” the doctor said to one of his surbodniates

“Carotid pulse is dropping ” someone replied.

The doctor began manual resuscitation as he compressed Kate’s chest with his palms.

CPR was taking place. And I suspected that she had gone into cardiac arrest.

” What’s happening , Doctor she suddenly shut her eyelids ” I became afraid ” Don’t let her die ,please . ”

Kate eyes closed and in the light of reality that dawned on me , it was obvious she was loosing grip onto life.

” Pulse is 30 and descending, sir, ” A female doctor said calmly.

” Bring in the E -cart and Charge AED ” He commanded again

Everyone was active , I was the only helpless individual present, I rubbed my palms on my lower lips and scratched my head , paced up and down and couldn’t stop fidgeting.

“Lord Please, I will change for the good , don’t let this befall, me ” I prayed in my heart ” Kate is innocent, take me instead , please”

” AED charged ” another female doctor responded ” Clear ” she concluded.

The machine zapped electricity and the impact on Kate’s chest yanked her up the the bed and down again.

” she has lost a lot of blood, get the I.V fluids” The doctor commanded and a nurse did the job immediately.

I stood there , silent , not knowing if I should cry or join the medical team.

” We are loosing her ” A fair skinned doctor said ” Pulse rate is flat”

” No, no– ” I cried ” Do something, please … She can’t die.. Kate!!!! ”

” Somebody get this man out here ,now” The first doctor commanded. More doctors came , amd the guy with moustache was still in command, I suspected him to be the attending physician.

A nurse dragged me out , ” sir , we will try our best. Please move back a little.”

A security officer in white vest, pulled me back as he tried to control the crowd in the ER, there were a lot of people there, everyone was inquisitive as they giraffe just to get a glance.

” sir , kindly step back please , be calm. Put yourself together. Madam ” he spotted another intruder ” move back please, don’t crowd that response team”

I could hear the voice of the doctor again as he dished out orders ” Get me the head of plastics.. Where is the second respnse team?..Check for inter cranial activity and suture that bleeding.. Increase charge ”

The AED machine zapped again and this time the charge was prolonged..

“Come on, Come on!!! Dammit !! ” The doctor cursed under his breathe. ” come on!”

” Fight it!! Fight for me Kate ! Fight !!” he said trying to remain calm.

Andrew

The gate was left open and I’d never do such . I never enjoyed the intrusion of others into my compound and my neighbors thought me to be awkward. I never kept pets, neither did I enjoy blasting music or even throwing parties. I liked it cool and calm.

Kemi probably left the gate as it were , when I drove in. What kind of tricks was she up to ? She now lived in my home and practically assumed the role of madam already, women and their thinking faculty.

” Well too bad, I am not ready for a life time commitment ” I thought to myself.

” what had she been thinking that made her leave the gate unlocked ? I questioned my subconscious mind and pulled the gate as it gave out a metallic cry. It could only be shut properly through the control room and that was inside the house.

My mobile had been vibrating all day in my pocket and I was too busy to even take a glance . I often missed unimportant calls like Kemi calling when I’m in the middle of a board meeting, that’s stupid.

10 missed calls ? Who the heck left me these much?
Mimi? What did she want. It’s been ages since we last talked and for her calling every two minutes ,it had to be urgent.

I walked into the living room ,while I dialed Mimi’s line but it didn’t connect. I put it back into my pocket.

I unlocked my brief case and brought out a 9mm pistol gun. I never thought a day would come when I’d have to use it , after purchasing it for self defence.

Time to work o’l boy ” I entrusted my life in its capabilities. I clicked the cartridge and it cocked with affirmation.

This was why I lived a private life, I had trust issues.

I moved into the control room and checked the camera footage., All clear. So where in the world was she, only one place had not camera installed in the entire house.

I light footed my way to the bedroom and my right hand twisted the lock handle, to give way into the room. Every breathe I took was important as I tried to be as quiet as possible. Fear sipped into my veins and shivers ran down my spine. My enemy could attack from any angle.

When I opened the door, I heaved a sigh of relief.

She cut me short of words as she turned and stared lustfully into my eyes. She packed her hair in a bathroom towel and was in a bathrobe.

She came forward and kissed me.
Where ever she took this , I was still to know. On several occasions when we made out, she never kissed me — she’d never do that before growling lustfully into my ears — wait ,something was fishy here.

The police officers had already put him in an interrogation room. I wanted to know why he wasn’t behind bars already! I knew it wasn’t that easy to lay an allegation of murder onto someone but we had proof and I heard it from the horse’s mouth, so why the delay.

I was tempted to take laws in to my arms and do it the old testament way, ” An eye for an eye” but Andy had no spouse.

” Screw me – I cursed under my breathe and twisted the door handle, i went straight to him and landed a blow to his left jaw.

” You b—–d, you will pay for this”

” I don’t know whats going on here” he brushed his lips against his shoulder, wiping away any sore or pain literally . His arms had been cuffed and the his face already red due to the the room’s high temperature.

I yanked another blow but my arm was pulled back by a force. The police officers had rushed into the room, they probably waited until that moment to restrain me from inflicting injury to the heartless man.

” sir ,take it easy” an officer said , he held my fist and tightly puled it back ” let us do our job”

” well, I’m not seeing any of it ” I replied ” this man needs to be interrogated -”

” I’m not saying anything , until I see my lawyer ” Andy blurted out.

He fixed his gaze at me and I knew he was up to something, and these officers were too dumb to know what he had in mind.

I wanted to slit his throat, cut out his voice box and feed it to the vultures. He disgusted me, and every breathe he took angered me the more.

” you think you can buy your way out ? I’m ready to go any length until you are behind bars.”

” I’m not saying a word ” he replied.

Having heard that , I pulled away from the officers grip and went outside towards the counter . The officers locked the door and just in that moment of glance, my eyes locked in with Andy’s.
The last time I got a similar stare , I had beat up a young boy who pestered my sister, trying to court her.Many years ago.

Andy’ s eyes radiated fear on his part, and a spark of guilt which was forced upon him. He wouldn’t get me with that! He was the culprit.

” Fuvk – ” I banged my fist on the counter.

If only this man had almost lost his wife few hours ago, he ‘d understand my plight. The same moment when Kate was in crisis,Tayo had gone into a shock and the medical team didn’t get to him on time. He kicked the bucket, at last .

The detective in charge of Andy’s case came out of the D.P.O ‘s office and his face was not promising to yield good news. He fixed his gaze upon me and held me on the shoulder and carefully whispered into my ear.

” Sir, this case would be hard to fight ” he said ” giving the fact that your wife’s friend had agreed to testify, and you have another witness that can prove he masterminded both attacks ” the detective looked me in the eye” we are one step ahead , meanwhile , your wife’s secret should be high priority. ”

This why I loved Nigerian police, pay them money and they will plant evidence where there is none.

” Only my family knows about it” I began calmly ” she is perfectly safe. And our suspect still thinks she is dead”

I had called my entire family at the hospital when Kate was resuscitated and transfered to the critical unit . She was still unconscious and yet to pull through. I took it upon myself to explain to them and warned them against letting the info leak.

Mimi was the first to get there, She loved Kate so much that the news had left her shattered internally but she was in tears of joy at the vital info I gave her . Their relationship was more than friends, it went deep into the bones and blood as sisters which each never had. I knew I could trust her.

She furrowed her eyebrow and wiped the tears that had gathered at the corners of those big white but pretty eyes, in awestruck she blurted out ” Andrew?”

In the same manner , shocked . she told me how Kate had confided in her about Andy’s demand to abort her unborn baby. It was so horrible to hear.

Having heard that , it became so clear that Andy was the prime suspect and Dami had been right all along. First it was Tayo and now he tried Kate.

” Mimi” I broke the silence.” I want you to call him. Tell him Kate is dead . Don’t text , call him”

She brought out her phone and dialed his number, it was not connecting or he didn’t pick.

” Not answering” she took it off her ears ” I can’t believe this, I never knew Andy as this evil.

My phone rang. It was Dami, she consoled me, she was weeping on the phone, but all seemed fake to me. When did she start caring about Katie?. She wanted to come over but it wasnt going to happen. I wouldn’t let her do so. Especially her .

” If you need anything ” she said ” anything at all, just let me know . I’m sorry for your loss, and accept my condolences” she sniffed in tears.

” No need ” I said “and thanks for the concern, Dami. I appreciate.”

I hung up the line , and just then my entire family walked right through the door down the corridor.

” Mama is here ” I said as I saw my entire family members troop into the hospital corridor from the main entrance ” And so is everyone ” I stood up and hugged my mom, she cried bitterly on my shoulder and I gave her a bit of comfort.

“Its OK, stop crying. she is still alive”

I was brought back to the present by detective Jethro’s voice when he repeated his question ” I hope you have the resources on ground for the is case?

” Yes, of course ”

” Okay , good and remember , we ain’t suing him yet, we just bait information and allow him fall for it”

“OK” I replied reluctantly , but inside me I wanted something more.

He nodded and invited me along as he opened the interrogation room , the door gave way and deep down in me, an internal struggle for retaliation and calmness took a bitter turn.The dark side of my subconscious mind, wanted to grab the detective ‘s gun and despatch two hot bullets into Andy’s cold heart.

Jethro Kelechi had been a detective in crime and related offences for almost a decade. He was never the smiley type and according to what I gathered, he was reported to have shot his own brother in th leg. The said man, had raped a ten year old and when caught in the act, everyone thought his brother would let him go, but instead his first reaction was to shoot his left jamb before cuffing him.. He made sure his wonded leg wasn’t treated until, his brother had confessed his real intentions. He wanted to use the girl’s destiny for wealth. As long as he broke her and use her blood, she ‘d never conceive in her lifetime . Thankfully, it was averted.

” Mr Andrew ” he began ” I know you are an influential man and all the reason why we haven’t laid a finger on you . YET!”

Jethro smiled, pulled out the chair and sat face to face with the criminal ” You did not understand my statement, did you ? There won’t be a lawyer , ” He grinned ” its just me and and you ”

At the sound of that , a smile grew across my cheek and I just couldn’t wait to see this man in action.

I sparingly opened my eyes into oblivion . It was a void and deserted setting, I was alone and afraid. But that waned away when someone walked into the room from a wall to the left . What? did he just work through that wall?

He came closer and somehow I felt at ease. I knew who he was .

” Tayo” I called out.

” hi Kate. Its been a while ”

” where am I? Am I – Am I dead? The words were scary.

” You are safe” he smiled and moved towards the door.

I suddenly felt an urgency to ask questions and it choked me to say the words, why did I feel like this was so real to me?

Everything was white and even the environs were celestial but the hospital equipments I saw made it look like I was still on earth, but in a another dimension, where I was the only occupant, dressed in a patient’s robe.

” wait ” I tried getting up from the bed upon which I found myself ” Am I dead ? What happened to my baby? I asked again.

Tayo turned and smiled again ” No Kate. you are not . In fact I’ve been waiting for this moment. You are unconsious and all this is in your head. Your baby ,, it didn’t make it.

Having heard those words , I shook with fear and panic .

” I’m sorry about that , Kate”

Tayo ‘s face was so bright and handsome , and his hair was as dark as coal. It was so well kempt and he waxed with energy and light.

” I knew she’d not make it. ” I said in tears , but the tears didn’t drop. I wondered why?

” Tayo , what you mean by , ” Waiting for this moment? I said after a while.

He came back and his white shirts sparkled with glamour, he was peaceful and happy. He touched me on the palm and I felt it.

” I took your place. I was aware that this day would come. So I waited untill you were rushed in.”

” I don’t understand ! I said

” No time for explanations Kate, but I want you to forgive him. He has done you a great number of wrongs but you have to forgive him. That way he will be at peace when –”

” When what?

I wanted to know.

” They await you, you have little time to get back . Just know that the fruit of the evil woman is not his. His seed never took part in the reproduction. , he will tell you, but don’t ask him. Even when he eventually does , pretend you are surprised.”

I couldn’t understand what he was saying , all I could think of was his wife, she had been watching over him since he slipped into a coma, six months back.

Tayo took a seat at the bedside and put his head forward with a spark of assurance in his eyes.

” Kate , when the time is right, it will be clear to you. You have to leave , you don’t belong here. And tell Omotola that I still love her.”

” why can’t you stay? come back with me”

” Kate I have been gone for a long time,I was just waiting to tell you all I just did, its not your time yet.”

” You know” he continued and got up from the seat,made it to the door and pushed it open ,then took a last glance at me ” That is all we take along with us , the love in the heart . The true love we have in our hearts, when all is gone and the end is near ”

” wait —” I said before a white light flashed through my eyes and I felt my heart pace increased. I moved figuratively through a tunnel and at the end of the tunnel was a door. A force pulled me forth without any resistance.

” Go on” a voice said’” Your son is praying and waiting for you. ”

I turned but saw no one . I pushed the door open and the rest I felt was a phenomenal state of pain.

Machines beeped and an Iv ran down into my arm . A doctor stood beside my bed, he was blurred or maybe I saw mixed figures. A sharp pain stung the surface of my forehead. I touched it to feel a bandage. And my abdomen burned me internally, like an entire tank of gasoline had erupted .

” Ouch’ I said softly .

I shut my eyes briefly again, it was heavy and painful to open. It felt like the first time for me to use them.

The doctor checked my vitals and I noticed he sounded happy, as he called out to the nurses, he was confused on what to do, I had no idea what was on his mind.

” Get the chief neurosurgeon in here ,now” the doctor’s voice commanded.

“It hurts ” I blurted out in pain. ” where is my husband? Where is my boy, where am I?

Gabriel

The day sped fast and evening came too soon. There was little visibility outside and the pool of blood which covered Andy’s face became dark maroon and clotted. He wasn’t saying anything even after the torture ; the massive brutality of Jethro. In that moment I admired his courage .

” We’ve been on this since morning , Andy” Jethro said ” just save yourself the stress. Tell me what I want to know” his voice sounded empathic this time.

Jethro faced me and shook his head. I knew from his reactions , that we weren’t getting anywhere with the interrogation.
Why did this man choose to make things difficult?. Andy was either immune to torture and pain or he was too strong willed.

” Mr . Gabriel ” the detective said ” let’s have a talk outside ”

” OK. Sure ”

His arms drew down his sleeves on both sides, he had sweat breaking from every pore on his skin.

He led the way and I followed , few inches away form the door, he stopped and turned to me . I shifted away from the door, and locked the hinge.

” I think I should be —”

” be on your way now and spend time with your family , right?” Jethro interrupted me ” Mr Gabriel ,… don’t worry . I will handle the situation from here. His stronghold will soon break”

I nodded and gave him a casual handshake. He was good at his job and I had no reason to doubt .Nevertheless, this particular case had taken a long time to solve. I hoped he won’t fail.

I took my leave and he went back into the room,through the air , I heard his voice barking again.

” Will you confess? Who did you hire to do the dirty job for you ?

Andy groaned and coughed at every blow Jethro landed on him. That served him right ! I wished , his heart bleeds with pain during the interrogation. I smiled at the thought of it.

A few minutes later , I was inside my car, which parked outside the station. I turned on the engine, I hesitated on shifting the gear to D. I thought of abandoning the car , right there and that minute , the feeling made me hate Dami even more. She had really complicated my life .

I heaved a sigh and tilted my head forward then I changed the gear box to drive.

” Gabriel…” Someone knocked on the side glass, I was figuratively startled and a jump in my heart came suddenly.

” Kemi?? ” I said under my breathe .

” what do you want ? I asked while rolling down the glass.

Kemi’s mood radiated seriousness and somehow, she looked pitiful. Her eyes were sorrowful, unlike her, as if she had been shedding tears . Who knows? it might be one of her numerous trickery. This lady was evil in human clothing. It would take a miracle to save her from sinister affairs .

” I have something to tell you ”

” what is it?

” Andy is not the murd– ” She paused ” He is innocent , I know who did it”

I became surprised and I alighted the car impulsively . I wanted to hear more, what did she mean by knowing “who did it”

” Tell me something Kemi ,what do you know? Don’t play games . You know who did what??… anyways. … I’m listening ..”

” can’t we at least find somewhere to seat– ” she paused when she saw my reaction ” ok, we can talk here …”

I crossed my arms and relaxed my back on the car. I was ready to listen but she better not joke around.

“OK”

” Gabe, I can boldly tell you that Andy is not behind the murder. ”

” You are trying to protect your lover. Spare me the trash? I hissed and disgust boiled deep down in my stomach .

” No , not that . OK fine , believe what you want but just know that he didn’t do it… It was”

She paused for the third time and I noticed her reactions again :the words choked her. Then she bit her lips, and moved her head from side to side.

In milliseconds , a siren bellowed intensively into the police premises. A group of officers alighted and the five of them carried AK 47’s , each man fully armed to the teeth. They had in custody , a criminal . The last couple of them, each from both doors, carried bags of what seemed to be cocaine.

” Damilola , is responsible ” kemi brought back my attention.

” You are joking ” I scoffed and opened my car door” count yourself lucky that you ain’t behind bars with Andrew. What sort of rubbish are you saying?”

I knew her game and I won’t play along , not while her lover was involved in the gameplay.

” Gabe , please listen ” She begged and pulled my arm gently. ” believe me. We are not saints. I have dark sides, and so do you, but save my heart from pain.. Drop the charges against Andy and I will testify that Dami had the entire event planned. From the hit on Tayo; the private investigator she hired to install a hidden camera in your home and how she framed Andy ”

I was shocked and lost of words. My knee buckled but I boiled with great anger. ” wait!!! A camera in my home? You are not serious?

So Dami had been watching my very move , even when I’m in the shower? And she’d saw the invisible? No way ! The thought tormented me.

She nodded in approval like she had read my mind.. She was d–n serious.

” why are you doing this? I asked ” Dami is your friend . So you’d throw away your friendship for that fool in there ” I pointed towards the police entrance.

” I love him ” she continued ” And I know you loved your wife too… I’m sorry for your loss but help me out here. Let’s make the real culprit pay. Don’t let Andy pay for a crime he didn’t commit. Please, I’m begging you ”

I had heard enough and I was convinced, it wasn’t easy to understand but I could not believe that my so-called employer had been behind every setback in my life. I should have known ..

I took out my phone and dialed the detective’s number and after a long discussion we reached a consensus ; a perfect line of action .

I was happy to see my entire family smiling and cracking jokes , even in the face of disaster and too many setbacks. They behaved like nothing had ever happened and that act really made my day.

Mimi cuddled my little boy and he laughed at her every tickle. She brushed his hard but curly hair and pulled his nose ” Big baby ” Mimi said ” See your long nose and pink lips — should I apply lipstick on the lips?

” No !!! ” Dave exclaimed ” I’m not a girl!”

” Are you sure? Are you sure ” Mimi’s arms tickled his waistline and he jerked ” Are you— short?”

” Aunt Miriam ” Dave begged and jerked ” stop .. Please ..awwww…ohhh …mummy!! ”
He laughed with so much happiness and joy, watching him made my heart glad..

Mama and Papa were together, arms locked and smiling at each other. Yvonne and Maxwell were always the happy couple…

” Cupcakes ” Yvonne said sheepishly ” I’m hungry , get me something nice and tasty ”

” How many times will you eat in a day? You just took snacks a minute ago, your name should be changed from Yvonne to ” Feed On”.

” uhnnnnnn!!. Cupcakes, Stop fooling around . I’m hungry ”

” Maxwell , ” Gabe’s mom cut in ” So you are not taking good care of my daughter ? Eh? ”

” Mama. Don’t mind her, she eats like an overgrown baby” He continued ” I give her all she asks for, but this , Nah! Not now.. She should be taking care off me, not the other way round.”

Mimi put up her head from the bending position it had been . Max’s words had spiked her response mechanism. She stopped tickling David and analysed the statement .

” Maxwell ? Where is it written : that only the lady takes care of her family? You men make it sound like its a duty she must uphold , what ever happened to being romantic and lovely?
I hope you won’t become Gabriel Number 2.”

She frowned her face momentarily after saying that and then put up a cheerful look .

” awwwnnn, that was so harsh ” I blurted out , but deep down in me, I knew I was lacking that love and romance.

” Where the hell was my husband , for Christ’s sake? I thought so loud that my head nearly burst with pain and the bandage became heavy.

” ouch” i groaned in pain..

I felt dizzy and my head spined literally and I rotated on the sick bed , from side to sides, successively tilting my muscles in pain.

” What is wrong ? Papa asked .

“Nothing ”

” Max , call the doctor ” Papa ordered ” something is wrong”

” Don’t ” I cut in ” I’m fine ”

The door opened and I saw him . I fell in love all over again. He was so handsome and I thought I wouldn’t see his face again. His broad chest and his pink lips, those hard but curly hairs.

He greeted everyone and I admired his respect for both young and old. He suddenly changed for the good.

” Gabriel !!! Love ” I heaved a sigh and my eyes became heavy.

” I’m here” he came forward , grasped my arms and planted a kiss on my forehead , then he continued” Im here.”

” Don’t leave me again please ” I said with tears clouding at the corners of my eyes”

” I won’t. ” He began “Love , I want to tell you something ….its –” he paused ”

” Shhhh!!!! Whatever it is ,It can wait ” I placed my finger on his lips .

” It has to be now –”

I already knew what it was. I was just pretending to be unaware, and ready to act surprised if need be, just as Tayo had insisted .

” Give him a chance ” A voice whispered in my head.

” Kate , I’m sorry for everything that has happened . Ive put you through a lot of trouble and I’m sorry about it . I was bad and yelled out on you . I promised you a happy life, but in the process, I took a turn left and went out of my way, almost committing adultery. For the sake of wealth , I did things I regret so dearly…I pretended to be the father of a little girl ” he paused and looked at every one in the room , then he continued with his valedictory speech ” The little girl isn’t mine . I only pretended and lied to her. To everyone of you ”

Gabriel turned and faced me as he confessed genuinely
“.. Kate , those awkward moments when I was not the best hubby and I’m away , even when you needed me most, like the case Dave ‘s birthday. All that stops today and on this special day, I –”

He smiled and brought out a gift card , accompanied by chocolates inside a bag he had. He put them into my palms.

” love ” He continued ” Happy anniversary. In front of everyone, here ,present today , I renew my vows to you, I promise to be faithful, henceforth – I …”

“I will always be there for you. ” I joined him and our voices became one in the solemn promise” …. Even when the world is against us, I will stand by you , love you and cherish you; in health and sickness; in wealth and poverty, till death do us part, ”

I was happy and tears broke out from my eyes.

Everyone in the room where I was stationed , became emotional and Mimi cried out tears of joy, she shed it uncontrollably .

“Awwwww!!! So touchy ” She blurted and turned to Dave ” Come here , give aunt a big hug.. I know, aunty loves you too”

I wanted to hear more honest confessions . I looked deep into his eyes, I hoped he would thread on calm waters .

He kissed my lips and his arms stroked my hair in the most romantic way . I discovered that the love I had for him was far from over, it just got renewed and I could not wait to be in his arms again: happy and blissful.

The best feeling ever is when you find a fulfilling end to every adversary. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Then comes the feeling of joy of getting what you never thought was possible to achieve . its wonderful.

” You know I actually thought he did it” Gabriel’s voice brought me back to the scene in the room.

It was a large king sized bed based upon a hard metal frame that kept it from the tiled floor. The two windows on the left and right let in the cool breeze.

I was transfered to private room in the hospital. And in that room, I had been for the past four days and my family visited me quite often.

” Andy is a nice guy. Seriously, I had doubts when those hoodlums called his name. ” I said and heaved a sigh.

” He will be released from custody today ” Gabriel said and took out his phone form the pockets ” Oh! Jethro just texted ”

He read the message and smiled , obviously he had good news to tell me. I hoped within me that Damilola had been arrested already .

He put it back into his Jean pockets and gave me a peck on the cheek. I had never thought I’d see this day come through: Where I would have him all to myself and have him love me for me. Hold him and wish time paused while we enjoyed the moment.
We were both together in the room with our son who was sound asleep on the left side of the bed near the window.
He so peaceful and calm.

” What’s the good news? I asked brushing my arms round Gabe’s shoulder bone.

” The police are en route to Dami’s home to apprehend her”

” Shouldn’t you be with them ?” I asked again feeling a bit awkward. ” This is your fight ”

He grasped my arms, then said softly ” I’ve been fighting for too long, let Nature and law finish the battle”

Whatever he meant by that, it had to be very important to him. He had arrived very early that morning with David and stayed up to this point in time. I looked at the clock on the wall across the room which said 8:45 am .

” I am really grateful ” I began ” Thank you for coming back to us-my son and I”.

” Its really noth-” he was about to say when the door flung open and a lady barged in with her daughter .

” Why won’t you just die? The lady said ,looking at me with disappointment written deep into her eyes.

She was the worst nightmare I had been having in days. My fears had finally come to pass.

Gabe’s phone ringed and he answered the call . After some minutes he uttered the words that had been choking him .

” Ok. I understand, She is here. Be quick”

Luckily , Gabriel stood up and confronted her. He yelled out to her and dragged her arms .

” Why do you hate me so much ?” Dami begged and struggled to break free from his grasp” Let go off my arm”

In the drama , I tried to get up from the bed and act but I was weak. The noise woke up David and he became startled , he held on tight to my b—m.

” What are you doing here ? Gabe queried and tossed a slap to her face. ” Its over Dami – you can’t escape the police anymore.”

” No its not ” Damilola said in tears ” Gabe, your daughter – Funmi misses you . Please come back to us. we will disappear together , the three of us and never to come back to this place. ”

” Daddy ! ” OluwaFunmi began with whimpering ” Please forgive mummy. I know she had hurt you , but we still love you ”

Gabe paced the room and turned to me, then to Funmi , then to Damilola, she was bitterly in tears.

Why the heck was she crying?. I had disgust written all over my body. I wanted to yank up and slit her throat for the last time , and put an end to this madness. The fear in me lessened as I saw she was in a pathetic state of mind.

” Lola ” I said ” Or whatever you call yourself, haven’t you had enough? I can still beat the devil out you, even in this condition”

” Please just die ” Dami said without feelings ” What are you still waiting for ?” she advanced towards me and wiped out tears off her eyes.

Gabriel gave her another resounding slap. He pushed her slightly backwards and I feared she might posses a weapon.

” How dare you say such a thing to my wife? ”

” I made you Gabriel ” Dami said as she scrambled off the floor ” Why–why ? What did I do wrong than give you a good life and all I ever asked for in return was your care and protection for my daughter . A father figure ”

” Dami ” Gabriel began ” I tried but , it cost me my family”

” Then marry me” she begged ” Make me your second wife ”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I got up from the bed where I had been resting. I gave her a dirty slap that made my palm red.

” You have no shame ” I said ” after you tried to kill me, and you even killed my baby ” I nearly broke into tears ” you think you can just walk in here and everything will be fine? You must be really mad, I will poison you if I get the opportunity. You hoe!. Take your b—–d somewhere else, she is not a part of this family,and will never be”

Gabe pulled me back and I felt energy leave my body. I sat back upon the bed and held my kid tightly. He was shaking with fear.Suddenly I felt pity for both children ,Dave and Funmi. The both of them had to witness this incident. It was so degrading that grown ups behaved in such disgraceful manner. What lessons did we teach our children?

” If you dont come back to me ” Dami said abruptly , she held out a gun . ” I will kill you Gabe. If I can’t have you , Kate won’t either ”

Fear gripped me, and shivers ran down my spine.

” Please drop the gun ” Gabe begged ” you don’t want to do this”

Dami pointed the gun towards me and Dave , then said ” I will shoot your son and that b—h over there. If you don’t do exactly as I say ”

I saw Funmi’s face as she trembled with fear. She moved back a little and tears clouded the corners of her eyelids.

” Mummy? What are you doing ? Funmi asked her crazy mother. She pulled her dress from behind.

” quiet, I am doing this for you .”

Suddenly, the door opened carefully and Dami didn’t notice. My father came fron behind and collected the gun forcefully out of her hands.

Funmi screamed in fear.

He pointed the gun at Dami, she had her back pressed up against the wall, her daughter cluctched to her side.

” Papa , drop the gun ” Gabe said calmly .

” Why? My father asked still aiming at Dami’s forehead.

” The police will be here soon, please don’t take laws into your hands. Give me the gun, slowly and gent-” Gabriel was about to say when he was interrupted .

” Shut up, you fool. You think I’m happy you are back with my daughter. Just like that and after all you did to her ? with this –this cheap w—e” Papa said in anger .

” Papa ” I cut in as things started to get steamed up “Please drop the gun .Please”

He didn’t blink and he focused at Gabriel .
Dami grabbed her daughter and tried to make it for the door, but was caught.

” move one more inch ” my dad said to her ” you will say goodbye to earth. ”

” Bolt the door ” he continued ” Now step back ”

She fidgetted and her daughter was crying furiously.
Poor Funmi . I feared even more for Dave who was in my arms shaking.

” Papa , please stop this . Let Justice take its course ” I chipped in again as I was more terrified than ever. Although I wanted him to pull the trigger, but I feared he would end up in jail.

” Keep quiet Kate” he barked ” I’m doing this for you ”

The door started to rattle and voices shouted from outside . I could hear Mimi and Yvonne calling out . They wanted to get in, but the door was barred . Maxwell and the doctor voices came as they tried to push the door open.

Unexpectedly, Papa and Gabriel started to struggle for the gun . Gabe struggled. Papa struggled. Both flexed muscles and Gabe had an edge but papa was more experienced than him. I was confused. Dami was confused. The people outside were equally confused, as they heard screams. I shouted out my lungs. Dave cried out. Dami shreiked out too, Funmi cried out bitterly as well.

” Stop it” I begged and cried ” Please stop this”

All of a sudden

” KrakaBOOOM!!!!!!

The 9mm reported with a loud bang . Silence engulfed the room. My heart stopped momentarily.
Gabe moved backwards. He was bleeding. He had been shot in the chest. I nearly ran mad at the sight of it.

” No!!!!!!!” I cried out by a freak of impulse.

I came down to his aid and so did Dave . Papa was confused, he dropped the gun and like a possessed being, the spirit left his eyes instantly. I saw guilt in his eyes, why did he have to do this?

Gabe slumped to the floor, the bullet had penetrated his heart, and he bled out.

Dami tried to touch Gabriel, but I slapped her and she retreated speechlessly, sitting on the cold tiles. Dave was in deep shock as he grabbed my arms, he was not supposed to have lost his Dad in this manner.

“Im sorry ‘” Gabriel uttered with his last breathe.

I remembered Tayo’s words “…You have to forgive him so that when the time comes, he will be–”

I cried out bitterly onto Gabriel’s lifeless body and that moment my world became dark. The feeling clouded me and I couldn’t think straight. I could feel my heart pace increase, the peace in my heart decreased.

I sparingly looked up to the clock as it struck 11 am.

Andrew

The door opened carefully and the figure that came into view was familiar. He was followed by a more familiar figure, Kemi.

” You are free to go ” The constable said after he unlocked the cuffs on my arm.

The feeling of freedom and ability to move my palms freely was alluring. I rubbed my arms together and got up from the floor, the cold floor that stunk of dust and putrid urine attacked my nostrils.
I came out of the cell, and the constable pushed me slightly on the back .

” You can go on now. Your clothes are at the counter. ”

I clutched my trousers together and gazed at Kemi.
She was speechless. She tried to touch me, but I drew back.

” Andy. Im sorry — I — I” she tried to say.

I looked at her again .I shook my head and moved past her , but her arms touched my shoulder bone.

” Please , let me make it up to you ” She began ” I am– I’m in love with you”

I turned to look at her , I couldn’t believe that she had the guts to say such after setting me up .

“Yes I do “she said with tears in her eyes ” I did from the first day I met you”

” I’m sorry ” I said ” I can’t love you back . My heart lies with another”

She instantly hugged me and her tears washed my dusty chest. She held on tightly and she didn’t let go.

” I know ” She said ” but you can equally learn to love me too”

I pushed her back slightly and walked out to the counter .

” Maybe ” I turned for the last time ” maybe I will , but now I just want to be alone . Love is not forced , its a gradual process”

She rushed to me and held my arm. She looked into my eyes andsaid ” This is where it all ends? ”

” For us ? Yes , but for me , No . ” I replied ” I need to rediscover my life. ”

I realised that somethings in life are just meant to be. Even if you try so much to avoid it , it happens,even in adversary it happens.

I watched as the undertakers lowered down the coffin into the space in the ground and the priest said the prayers.

“….A time to live …. A time to die ….” those parts of his statement caught me in the neck.

I was not able to shed tears. They didn’t come out, why?? I was shocked.

Andy hugged me and so did my son Dave. Mimi cried unto the shoulders of Elisha, the duo were my best friends for life.
Yvonne held onto Maxwell, she brushed her tummy carefully. She had conceived and was five weeks pregnant.

For a moment I thought if Gabriel and reincarnated and was coming back to us. No!!! it was absurd but somehow I was happy for Yvonne.

Mama held tightly to Gabe’s mum as both were entwined with their arms and pools of tears washed down their faces. Everyone was in black and their faces were equally gloomy as would the cold night of winter.

If I ever fell in love again, it would take time to be true and I hoped to be in a better position to give out more, nothing feels like your first and one true love.

As the grave was covered, the impact of the sand on the coffin, made me feel like Gabriel was becoming a memory taking off and screwed deep into a container, then locked up in a stash , far away , his last words echoed into my ear, the echo of goodbye blanketed my subconscious mind , it was like a mushroom umbrella that ousted the rays of logic. A moment when Love dies..
