"2 Sam 5:7 7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. (KJV)"

We first find the name of "Zion" mentioned here in the Bible. Zion was originated in the Bible and has not be found in any other historical source. The name "Zion" has different and conflicting Biblical meanings. Here are some of them:

Zion was originally a Canaanite fortress

Zion was a "stronghold" and a "fort" and was later called "the City of David" (2 Sam 5:7 7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of

Zion: the same is the city of David. (KJV)
; and (2 Sam 5:9 9 So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. (KJV)

Zion was a "hill" in Jerusalem on which the Temple was built (Joel 3:17 17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in

Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more. (KJV)

Zion was a "holy place" and a "sanctuary" (Ps 20:1-2 1 The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; 2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; (KJV)

Zion was the "Heavenly City" or at times described as "Heaven"

Zion was at times described as "Jerusalem, the Land of Israel, The Jewish people, and the Theocracy of God"

When we begin to study Egypt we find soon that the word "Zion" is not an original Hebrew word for it consists of two elements:
"Zi"
"On"

"Zi" is a Hebrew word meaning a barren place and "On" is the name of the Egyptian ancient holy city of Heliopolis which is today a s"On (holy place) of the desert"[/color] which is conuburb of Cairo. The Bible tells us that Joseph married "the daughter of Potipherah, priest of On" (Genesis 41:45). Thus Zion is a combination of the Hebrew-Egyptian word meaning "On (holy place) of the desert" which is connected first with Egypt and not Israel.
