Government plans to hit Nigerians with an increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate would be a retrogressive move, according to economists. It would be retrogressive because it would hit the poor harder than the rich in terms of its effects on income. In a country where you have a vast number of the poor such as you have in Nigeria with poor people making up more than 70 percent of the population, it is a shame that the issue even comes up for debate.
