Mothers are powerful and very potent in the life of the children. The words spoken by the mothers to the children carries a lot of weight. No matter the discouragement from outside, encouragement from inside means a lot. In the life of everyone, this encouragement from inside comes basically from the mothers in the form of advice, counselling and prayers. A man who instructs youths (youth instructor) on good conduct once told us sometime ago that whenever he goes to visit a particular youth and talks with him the youth will brace up and become serious and will start attending the youth meetings. After a while the youth will relapse again. This encouragement and visits and relapse and seriousness and relapse cycle continued for a while. Whenever the youth instructor was not in town the youth will not show up at the youth meeting where he was supposed to be. One day the youth instructor went to the boy’s house on a visit and encouragement and heard his mother scolding him that “see other youths the way they are, you are supposed to better, see such and such and such and such…on and on”. The youth instructor had to step back from knocking at the door at that visit as he was not happy. The instructor was doing a great job encouraging the child, the mother was doing a bad job discouraging the child. Eventually the mother’s discouragement prevailed.

Myles Munroe, Ben Carson and others spoke about their mothers and the roles they played in their life advancement. Outsiders said they could not make it. They said they were dumb. They were monkeys who can’t learn anything. Their mothers told them that was not the truth. They believed their mothers. The words and encouragement from their mothers made them become tops in their chosen professions. A mother is powerful and can determine the direction once life can and will go.

The story had been told of an armed robber who at the point he was facing the firing squad asked that he wanted to speak with his mother. When the mother moved closer, he asked her to bend her ears as he wanted to tell her something. When the mother bent her ears, he used his teeth to cut if off! Hey!!! When he was asked why did you do that? He said he was not well guided by his mother about morality. He said his mother enjoyed his stealing runs and encouraged him in it. So, he thought that was the way to go and graduated to become a big armed robber.

As mothers today, what are you telling your children? What are you training them to become? It will bounce back on you later. As children, you can decide to filter off the bad influence of your mother, if any, about life and living. My own mother prays for me whenever am studying (especially in the midnight when she sees the light of my room on) that God will help me to understand and make it. She tells me am strong and that’s why am doing the tough courses that others flee from. My own good moomi (my mother) of blessed and sweet memory told me to use my position to help and assist people.
