For the first time in recent history, Bayern Munich failed to go pass the UCL round of 16, a decline from their quarter-final showing the previous season. Niko Kovac’s team looked very flat when Liverpool picked up a 3-1 win at the Allianz Arena, that knocked them out of Europe’s premier competition.
The Croatian start to life in Bayern Munich was strong, as he whitewashed his former club Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFL Super Cup, and went on to win his first four league matches. It seemed he was the perfect fit to move Bayern forward, but a string of poor performances in October and December, saw the Bavarian giants playing catch up to Borussia Dortmund at the turn of the year.

There were reports that players of Bayern Munich did not like the Croatian’s rotation policy, and rumours started emerging that he would be sacked. The club chiefs went public to dispel this rumour. He found the right balance in his selection toward the end of December and has stuck to that. Bayern Munich is back to the top of Bundesliga following a 5-1 win over rivals Dortmund in Der Klassiker a couple of weeks back and are favourites to win the DFB Pokal, but the champions league exit to Liverpool has brought back the pressure on Niko Kovac.
With Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben set to leave in the summer, Bayern Munich needs their new generation of players to step up and take them back to the heights they once achieved in 2013. Bayern will have to spend big if they want to compete with the best in the Champions League. They have already secured the services of Atletico Madrid Left Back Lucas Hernandez, and Stuttgart defender Benjamin Pavard. The French duo will join Die Roten in July.

Serge Gnarbry is the only established prospect they have in attack at the moment, with Kingsley Coman believed to be one injury away from an early retirement, Niko Kovac will have to make good signings that will replace Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery. Names like Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and Luka Jovic of Frankfurt have been mentioned as potential targets in the summer. German international, Timo Werner is likely to be sold by RB Leipzig in the summer and Bayern Munich is the front runner to sign the attacker. If they can complete the signing of Timo Werner, buy two exciting wingers like Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa and Chelsea’s Hudson-Odoi, then they could be on their way to reclaiming their spot as one of the Elite clubs in Europe.
