The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has said that 2,441 people lost their lives to accidents on Nigerian roads between January and August, as recorded in its road crash data for 2010.The Corps Education Officer (CEO), Mr. Samuel Obayemi, disclosed this in Lagos, at a public enlightenment programme held in collaboration with Nigerian Breweries (NB) plc, tagged Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign.

The FRSC road crash data, however, gave a 43.81 per cent decrease in road crashes as against 6,353 crashes and 41.07 per cent decrease in the death figure within that same period in 2009.

The FRSC record also revealed a sharp decline in the number of injured people, which read 11,256 as against 17,224 recorded in 2009, showing a 35.65 decrease.

“It is not strange that in all these, the number of arrests has increased from 290,725 in 2009 to 383,540 in 2010 (31.61 per cent) increase. shocked

“This is traceable to the fact that we have more commands and more patrol vehicles, thereby covering more kilometres in the nation.

“But we hope that before long, as we unrelentingly pursue the various programmes aimed at actualising safe road use, even the arrest would become minimal,” Obayemi said.

Hence, to stem the tide of road accidents in the country, Obayemi said any driver found to be driving under the influence of alcohol would be prosecuted.

He said “the FRSC Establishment Act of 2007, Section 22,” empowers the corps to prosecute offenders who risk a two-year imprisonment or a fine of N2,000 or both.

Obayemi stated that “while the law exists, the corps, nonetheless, recognises the importance of public education campaigns to change the psyche of the average human being, hence the need for the sustained collaborative campaign between FRSC and NB.

To boost the FRSC’s efforts at reducing fatality during accidents on the highways, the NB at the programme donated 6,000 helmets to be sharedamong okada riders in five selected states in the country.

Also speaking at the programme, the Corp-orate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, Mr. Yusuf Ageni, represented by the Corporate Social Responsibilty Manager, NB Plc, Mr. Vivian Ikem, said “the Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign aligns with global concerns and efforts to reduce road crashes around the world resulting from a number of factors including drinking.

Dangerous increase in the stats. And what percentage of the numbers of these arrests were actually proper/legal? Does refusing to pay bribe money considered legal?

Bribe giving or taking is a prohibition under the Nigerian law. Thus, refusal to offer bribe is legal. This must, therefore, be encouraged so as to sanitize our nation of this aspect of social evils.

Sorry for my unclear explanation. I was trying to suggest that the number of arrests increase was a bit too much. Maybe some ppl were illegally arrested, like for refusing to pay bribe by some shady police men.

more people have died from accident in 8months than the the total number of deaths from air-crash, perhaps, in human history.

more people have died from accident in 8months than the the total number of deaths from Volcanic eruptions, landslides and earthquakes all put together this year.

those numbers suck and they wanna scare the living daylight out of any would-be traveler.

there are two majors eating lives and limbs of Nigerians the most: JEBBA-MOKWA and OKENE-ABUJA.

it is crazy that we do not have the technology of filling small potholes. they have to become cratars before we fill them and one important MOFO must have died in it

before the concerned authorities deem it fit to act.

yet, we are so blessed.

With respect to safety precautions when driving a vehicle, the philosophy of Nigerians is IDENTICAL to that of Indians, in that most people who grew up in both of those cultures remain resolutely convinced that the probability of being involved in a road mishap is an exclusive function of DESTINY and DIVINE INTERVENTION, as opposed to being related to safe driving practice, vehicle roadworthiness or seatbelt use.

On the rutted, lunar surfaced roads of the Indian and Nigerian heartland, dilapidated, overloaded cars and trucks careen with reckless speed, overtaking on blind corners, swerving with random abruptness to avoid the ubiquitous potholes and playing chicken with oncoming traffic by driving along the wrong side of the road on a whim.    In both Nigeria and India, seatbelts are rarely ever worn, with most of them REMOVED from cars by the slash of a blade, since the very existence of those safety restraints is regarded as shameful acknowledgement that absolute, unquestioning faith has NOT been reposed in magical protection afforded by gods or other supernatural entities.

The predictable outcome of that suicidal holy road-warrior mentality is highway carnage on a mind-boggling scale, as exemplified by the road fatality statistics quoted in the first post of this discussion.  Some fools never learn, and Charles Darwin would turn in his grave to learn that the practical manifestation of his theories expounding the selectivity of species survival still account for so many blissfully ignorant victims even today in the year 2010.

I was travelling from Ibadan to Abuja on 18 January 2010. At exactly 12:00am, our Bus hit a trailer and roll over to the ground after we just left Akure. Miraculously, no one died. we are saved because the bus was not on a bridge or on top of a hill. And the driver switched off the engine just in time or we could all have burnt to death. I have 2 young children and my wife was 3 months pregnant at the time of the accident. I am so happy that I am alive to see my daughter who is now 2 months. Will the house help me praise the LORD that I and my fellow passengers are not part of these tragic statistics.

Its only in Nigeria that relevant bodies give statistics and people who dont even work with them begin to deduce and adduce reasons why they are wrong -

Where in this world can statistics be absolutely accurate or correct?

Where credibility lies , trust is due. People can assume and question where credibility lacks.

Anything else?

There should be  nothing surprising or shocking about the increase in arrest statistics. It could be due , for instance, to the increase in vehicular traffic.
It ceratinly has nothing to do with refusal to pay extortion which is absolutely illegal and would not show up in official stats. I am not even aware that the FRSC as opposed to the Nigerian Police Force has a habit of, or reputation for, carrying out arrests without a cogent reason.
