Dear SARS,

When your birth was announced, we all thought it would be a good thing.

The name, SARS, Special Anti -Robbery Squad, is such a cool name and we all know with a cool name like that, it has cool responsibilities.

Your primary job was to fight armed robbery, those who terrorized and made our lives a living hell. To stop car snatching, we wanted our roads to be safer. To stop kidnapping, our kids and parents need not to walk in fear and trembling.

To basically stop crimes. Especially the use of firearms. SARS, you were born so that we would thrive. And given the way your predecessors executed their duties, you were deemed great.

You even helped in the battle against the infamous Shina Rambo. For a while, you gave us peace and restored our sanity. Now, it seems all that has gone to mush.  You are the reasons for our tears. You are now the hunter we now dread.

Dear SARS, you are harassing the very people you were born to protect.  You no longer fight against robbery as your name implies. Now you fight against the youths, your own youth. Vulnerable and benign youth.

You have gone out of your job description and turned into a monster that people fear as much as they fear the armed men you are supposed to protect us from.

You have beaten innocent people because they have two phones. Stripped young men of their dignity. Is having two phones a crime? Does being blessed enough to have two phones make you a criminal?

You have shot at innocent youths with fine cars and called them scam artists.  Where is your proof that they are “yahoo boys”?

You shoot without consideration as to where your bullets land. You have arrested and brutalized hard-working Nigerian youths just because of a stereotype you created about their chosen hairstyles.

There are tons of boys and girls in Nigeria born with dreadlocks and those that decided that they wanted to have dreadlocks. Does that make them all robbers?

If that’s one of your criterion for an armed robber then it’s time to go back and take a better look at your JD. You even went as far has to point your weapons at celebrities that everyone knows and call them scam artists like you don’t recognize them.

The ones who you were created to protect have asked for your death, on every social media it is #ENDSARS.

I think it is time for you to be shelved until you have been examined and deemed worthy to be part of society again. You have lost the respect that was once given to you. The admiration you seek is now disgust because of the ill work you have done.

Are you to blame for your waywardness or are your creators? We have lost too much and cried too much because of you. The question now is will you continue to terrorize or turn a new leaf and carry on the good work you were meant for?

Dear SARS, we await your reply
