Karma is real. We all knew Sanusi plot to bring down Cecilia back then. Thank goodness he's now experiencing a fair share of it.

You think the CBN just took the banks and sold them?! SMH undecided

These banks were so indebted that their shareholder funds had effectively been ENTIRELY WIPED OUT! The banks had to be re-capitalized by (1) the CBN injecting billions into them (and effectively becoming their shareholders), (2) the NDIC paying billions to their depositors, and (3) AMCON buying trillions of their bad loans. The banks were NOT sold for a "pittance" but selling them enabled CBN to recoup some public funds.

Oga there is no bank whose shareholders can not rescue

Mr John Aboh did not make a public statement inferring or expressly stating his position that I indicated earlier; you don't expect him to say that in public, do you, but it is a reliable insider information that I divulged to you, take or leave it.

I emphasized Oceanic Bank's case based on experience and access to information peculiar to Oceanic Bank. I can not speak for other defunct banks because I don't have adequate information.

Let me give you another privileged information - you can not verify this information based on data available in public domain. There is a commercial bank that narrowly missed the list of banks that failed stress test. The MD was unofficially made to retire from the position and board and another condition was for the majority shareholder, in proxy or person, to reduce his/her shareholdings in the bank by selling via private offer to preferred (Apex Bank preferred) investors.

The MD reluctantly and abruptly complied and the bank was cleared as unstressed bank. The bank in question was more into corporate banking unlike Oceanic Bank that was more into retail banking so you can imagine the devastating effect if it was listed as stressed; would not have survived as long as Oceanic did. An MD from that bank eventually became a CBN governor. Note that corporate bank account holders are more sensitive and delicate than retail bank account holders.

Bottom line is that there is more to the information you see on public domain. There is often some undertones and purposes for churning out the information we come across on public domain.

Every action that Cecelia and the management of the defunct Oceanic Bank engaged and were convicted for was practiced by all the banks at that time. Though it is arguable that Oceanic Bank was most guilty but the fate of Oceanic Bank was sealed by the clandestine, political and vindictive plans of some powerful people in Nigeria with Sanusi as the arrow head.
My brother God bless you! I like your analysis.

What kind of society do we live in?. This woman still got the effrontery to talk. She's the worst of kind in the banks along with that man from is it intercity or what. Can't remember his name. If the law doesn't catch up with them, the curse of the lives they ruined will visit them. What a world we live in

Cecilia Ibru, the former Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic Bank has for the first opened up on her ordeal in court and she disclosed that the Emir of Kano and former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi persecuted her badly because he thought she wanted his job at the CBN.

The economic guru who disclosed that she got married before 20 and also had her son in January before her 20th birthday, revealed that her travails in court got her really depressed. Recounting her ordeal, Cecilia Ibru who stated that Sanusi persecuted her because he thought she wanted his job at the CBN said;

I won’t say betrayal, including (Lamido) Sanusi (the then Governor of the Central Bank) himself, but people that I thought would come and help me did not do so. However, God raised other people to help me. Back then when I was in office, if I was at home, you wouldn’t find a parking space in my compound; it was always filled with cars and people who wanted one favour or the other from the bank. But after that episode, everywhere became empty.

One day, a man came to visit me at home and when he was going, there were no security personnel or driver. So, he asked what happened to them and I said the bank had withdrawn all of them on the order of Sanusi. They withdrew everything. He said that wasn’t good. The man asked me what it would cost me to put in place some security measures and I said about N1m. He said I was a popular personality and I couldn’t go around without some form of protection. He paid that N1m every month until I went to London. And when I got there, I informed him I had travelled. I can’t forget that kind of a person, and guess what, he is a Muslim.

Stop bringing Igbos into this Sanusi and Ganduje feud. It's not our business. We only comment cos we're still part of Nigeria for now, and we reserve the right just like every other Nigerians to make comments on issues going on in other parts of the country.

Yes ma I totally agree with all you said but please can you also help us shed light on how you ran Oceanic Bank Plc like a private enterprise using depositors funds as you pleased? No one is perfect, Sanusi is far from perfect and his tenure as CBN Governor did garner alot of controversy some for the right and some for the wrong reasons but as far as removing those CEOs, HE WAS ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON!!!

It is a shame he didn't remove more, probably couldn't do so due to politics. They were all corrupt administrators using depositors funds for personal gain, no different from our corrupt politicians. Even after some of these banks got CBN bailout money or govt intervention fund, it was the same end result of mismanagement, so in my opinion they just had to go. A lot of bad loans with little or no collateral were given to questionable companies fulfilling little or no requirements, under the watches of these so-called CEOs. Overall, this created a negative perception of our banking industry and in turn affected the economy. And whenever they ran into murky waters, the government was always there to help.

Money that ought to be used for some other pressing needs somewhere else in the country was used to bail these banks out. For this and this alone Sanusi was right. Some may argue that his persecution was selective, I don't doubt it cos the evidence points in that direction but you can never argue that those CEOs were not corrupt and that they had not lost their way.

The curse I placed on Sanusi in 2009 when he made me loose #2,000,000 in a defunct Micro finance bank(Mustard seed) has just started coming to pass after 10 years.

The MD of the bank who was an accomplice is already serving 15 year jail term which started from 2014.

Indeed God answers prayers

Sanusi was just too ambitious then, he was similar to el rufai, however this woman was a corrupt spoilt brat turned CEO.. strangely when Mr saint sanusi got sacked a strange fire burnt CBN records room afterwards.

And kano emirate Treasury had been taking a nose dive under his watch...

.

Was that why Cecelia voluntarily pleaded guilty and entered into a plea bargain and returned billions of naira and forfeited properties? Don't forget that she also served two years in prison. Why do you guys loved looters so much like this?

I was referring to those banks in particular, I didn't indicate that.
Lehman brothers had nothing to do with shareholders fund , but accounting fraud...if that is your reference there's not a single Nigerian Bank not involved in accounting fraud, that includes First Bank where Sanusi was CEO.
HOW in the world can you convince one that banks with Northern interest like Bank of the North and Unity bank had better balance sheet than likes of Oceanic, Intercontinental and Afribank?

Most of those bank were in a worse state when Soludo came on board as CBN governor but he chose a different approach unlike Sanusi who just created unnecessary panic in the whole system

Accounting fraud had NOTHING to do with the collapse of Lehman Brothers (ironically fraudulent lending caused Oceanic Bank’s issues). undecided

Lehman Brothers collapsed because it was over-leveraged, with over $600 billion of debt at the time it collapsed and shareholder equity of about $22 billion (market value of $60 billion at its height). Lehman had played heavily in the mortgage-backed securities market and thus the subprime mortgage crises hit it badly because a default in about just 5-7% of its portfolio wiped out its entire shareholder equity (emphasis original). Unable to raise additional shareholder equity or secure a governmental bailout, Lehman was compelled to close shop.

As for Bank of the North, it was NONEXISTENT by the time that Gov Sanusi undertook the bailout exercise in 2009, so is irrelevant to the discussion. Meanwhile, Gov Soludo did NOT meet the same sort of crisis Sanusi did. In fact, it would not be entirely incorrect to say that Soludo met NO real crises at all. The situation that Soludo met were many little banks with such little capital that they effectively could not provide requisite financing for businesses. He thus RAISED the minimum capital requirement of banks, compelling consolidation in the process.
