The best way is just to live your life and appreciate the little things, that's what really matters.

Talk to people, listen to music, eat food, watch movies, play games etc. This is the only life you have, why not live it to the fullest.

Do you avoid watching a movie because at some point the movie ends? Or just leave a bowl of snacks on the table to gather dust because at some point that bowl will run out?

I would recommend nihilism for you...

..
Life has no intrinsic meaning except the one will we give to it..
I've come to understand that sufferings and enjoyment are parts of life..fortunes and misfortunes..
Some, by our doings, others, out of our hands..
And knowing full well that my actions will begat repercussions, I tend to be mindful and careful..
I draw strength from within..

How can any man claim to be an atheist unless he has traveled to the farthest place in the universe? if you are an atheist and yet you fear death, maby you are uncertain if death is the end of your existence

Has nothing to do with fear of death. But more to do motivations. Most people forge through have some set of beliefs.
Some will say it is divine command from GOD to live, fvck and multiply. Some believe in suffering now so that their non-existent future children will 'enjoy'. Some believe they get to enjoy in an afterlife etc.
I just looking at motivations to continue to exist(man must live mentality) especially when one is in perpetual hardship.

For those(atheists) suffering everyday doing hard labor or earning below living wages or sickle cell patients etc., what stops you from quitting(commit suicide)?

I'd say that, for those suffering, it's only the hope that things can get better they hold on too.

+ Suicide is not an option that affects only one individual. It has Serious side effects on the family as well.

For those who keep on going, their sorrows is not so strong enough, to make them decide to end their lives, knowing the sorrow they'll be bestowing on their loved ones(Family).

As an Atheist. I FEAR DEATH. More like I don't WANT to die. Why?
It's not because I fear hell.. I'm glad to say I've finally gotten rid of that belief.

But Rather Because I belief, Life ends at death.. There's no Afterlife, no rebirth, nothing.

This is the only life I get to live, my only chance to live, so I wish to enjoy it as much as I can while I have it.

Right now, I don't believe I have enjoyed life so much.. So Death is not an option for me now.. so I don't want to die. Hence I fear death.

Don't pick my word out of context, I simply mean your religion was bestowed on your by chance because you could have been born into any of the thousands of religion out there.

Why do you feel you are special or your religion is?

Not at all, you were open minded and see Muslim as a better religion and a way of life.

Same thing with atheist, most of which were once christains.

As such don't question why someone would decide to be an atheist if you can't have an open mind to why he is one.

alright.

If you fear death, yet believe that God does not exist, then you are being irrational. Then again, maybe you uncertain whether death is the end of your existence. ARE YOU READY TO DIE?

Death is the destination we all share, no one has ever escape it.

I don't believe in an after life (I am not doomed with the fear of going to hell or heaven). I am not afraid to die.

As regard your question. Why should I be ready to die? I am not suicidal. This is the only life I am sure of and I intend to enjoy it to the fullest before exiting the world.

IF I CAN'T CHANGE THE WORLD, AT LEAST I SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIX THE THINGS I CAN. OFFER SOME LITTLE KIDS THE CHANCE OF BETTER LIVES AND ASSIST THE UNDERPRIVILEGED AROUND, AND REDUCE THE SADNESS IN SOME PEOPLE'S LIVES.
EVERYDAY I HOPE TO ENJOY LIFE IN THE WAYS I CAN, AND EXPLAIN TO THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW IT YET, AND CARE TO LISTEN, THAT WE HUMANS ARE ALL WE HAVE AND THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE LOOKING OUT FOR US.. AND WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER IN THE WAYS WE CAN.

KNOWING THERE'S NO DESTINY OR PLAN FOR MY LIFE BY A GOD ABOVE, I LIVE ENJOYING EVERY SWEET MOMENT AND TRY TO MAKE THE BAD TIMES GOOD IF I CAN. I STAY POSITIVE ALWAYS. I TRY TO FORGIVE, AND AVOIDING STRESSING TOO MUCH BECAUSE I BELIEVE THIS LIFE IS NOTHING. IT'S JUST WE HUMANS COMPLICATING THINGS FOR US AND KILLING ONE ANOTHER AS WE GO...

IN THE END, NO MATTER WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN, NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU PRAY AND BELIEVE YOU'RE SPECIAL, WE ALL DIE LIKE COCKROACHES AND THE EARTH KEEPS ROTATING AND REVOLVING BECAUSE WE'RE JUST AS SIGNIFICANT AS GRAINS OF SAND. SO WHY WORRY ABOUT DUMB THINGS LIKE JESUS AND MUHAMMAD? smiley

Athiests in the house,
What drives you everyday, with no belief in God and by implication no external meaning to life? For those(atheists) suffering everyday doing hard labor or earning below living wages or sickle cell patients etc., what stops you from quitting(commit suicide)?

How do you find meaning in life? Cognitive dissonance? Or what philosophy of life do you subscribe to?
Please share.

The mere fact that I woke up to another day is enough impetus for me to go on, as I live my life one day at a time. I choose to draw inspiration from all of the things I perceive. I give meaning to my life by careful introspection and attempting to obtain all the things I desire. I choose to do things that promote my well being and those of others not because a god commands it but because I have accepted that cooperation is a better way for us to achieve our goals as a species and as individuals. Death holds no terror for me but I do not want to suffer a painful passing, I want to end my life with all the dignity I can muster.

The will to survive, the need to love and be loved and the freedom to give life any meaning i deem fit, drives me everyday.

The same thing that stops a theist from committing suicide, the hope for a better tomorrow. The only difference is while a theist believes a better tomorrow is only possible with prayer, fasting, deliverance, etc (God), an atheist believes preparation and hard work would lead to a better tomorrow. Incidentally, suicide by theists is far more prevalent than suicide by atheists.

The meaning of life is the meaning you give to it. To Christians, the meaning of life is fellowship with their brethren and jesus, an aspiration to the Christian heaven. Similar thing for the Muslim. The difference being, instead of a materialistic heaven as the Christians, the Muslim heaven is an erotic one.
To me my philosophy is the old age philosophy of live and let live. Do onto others as you would want them do unto you.

Uuuhm, it's pretty simple; The purpose and meaning in life isn't external, it isn't transcendent, it is immediate, it is localized, confined to the time we have.

I wake up every morning - I'd honestly want to eat - Purpose: Get something to eat.

I really wouldn't like to sleep outside - Purpose : Make money for rent.

I'd honestly like to live in the best houses, ride the besr cars, live happy, travel, marry, kids, build houses, have fun with friends, drink beer.: Purpose - Work, achieve them.

You see? It's pretty simple. My purpose is local, it's immediate, it effectively drives my life and how i choose to live it.

And it is relatable to everyone here.

I enjoy the experience of life and I'd want to experience it for as long as i can get - therefore i have absolutely no reason whatsoever to wish for death, it is blatantly consonant to what i want, things i enjoy.

Finding things like meaning and purpose outside your life, outside this earth which you know is real, effectively makes this immediate, localized life that you are living meaningless.

The value of a thing isn't that it gets to last forever, as a matter of fact, more common something is, more meaningless it becomes.

An infinite life is as a matter of fact infinitely meaningless.

So now, i have questions for you;

1. why haven't you committed suicide yet? You believe in a place that is infinitely better than this earth and life. I don't see why anyone would intentionally sleep outside in the dirt when he has a mansion in Lekki. You supposedly have somewhere infinitely better, why linger here any longer?

2. When you are in heaven, with the infinite enjoyment and life. Remind me again what the purpose and meaning will be in that?

It's funny the irony of this question didn't fall on you before you posted it.

You guys are so irrational. The fear of death is hardwired into the DNA of every living creature, even plants.
Funny enough theists, especially Christians fear death more than any group of people I know, despite their passion to go to heaven. That's the real Cognitive dissonance.
I, don't fear death itself, what I fear is the pain associated with death, the physical pain I would suffer before death and the psychological pain my family would suffer.

Fearing death is a natural thing. Even animals fear death, not because they think that they will go to hell fire after death or because they will face judgement, but because the fear of death is intrinsically woven into human consicounsness. Even Allah and Yahweh your gods fear death.

I could ask you this question and it still would be as valid and demonstrate the complete inanity of that question. How could you claim to be a christian unless you have transversed the entirety of this universe? how? tell me?

if you are an atheist and yet you fear death,
Fear of death is in fact an intrinsic part of life. Since what it means to live is to not die, it is completely logical that life incessantly tries to not die.

maby you are uncertain if death is the end of your existence
or maybe they think it is, that is why the'd want to linger on as long as they can get

well to me family bond matters a lot. if you have loss someone really close you will know deep the may is, that same reason I can't take my own life knowing how my family will feel losing me mehn I am not that selfish.
secondly I feel suicide is cowardly act, I mean my life is mine to protect its only something beyond my control that can take it and if it is within my reach to defend my life sure.
also why do people feel once you are an atheist life become useless far from it. we do not live because we are hopeful for a Paradise or torment but live because we live. the planet earth millions species some extinct which don't give an ass crap about a super being up there but they live, reproduce and die they didn't go about committing suicide.

in fact I will suicide is a human flaw because there are millions of species on this planet and study have not find any which partake in suicide except it part of their evolution for the survival of their kind.

all organism have the right tool for self preservation as you see danger, you flee.

as for me I take my lessons from life itself, if feel sad that I am not dangote or his son, I will always remember their people who live far below my standard and many of them are happy people so why bother myself.

I am a deep thinker so I find the meaning to life all around me, the only way I am giving up my is if it going to have a huge impact on other lives or if my life can save another anything outside that is a no no

fear is basic instinct for survival that is why an organism will react to every threat no matter how small the organism is, without that we all will cease to exist

Every living thing is embedded with this "survival instinct". It has nothing to do with your belief, it has more to do with nature.

Even fowls do run from death. Lions do the same. Flies and the rest of them. Does it mean they fear hell or perhaps, know about the afterlife?

Even a man on a verge of suicide can run from death at some point, even when they have no reason to keep living.

Death comes with pain and when it kicks, the body is wired to run from it, to seek for shelter, to survive! That way, we don't go extinct as a specie.

Atheists being scared of death has nothing to do with your fairy god or imaginary hell.
