Salam Alaykum brothers and sisters.

I have a question that just occurred to me. I and a friend were arguing few hours ago about the ending of Ramadan.

He insisted, end of Ramadan, like the beginning, is determined by sighting of the moon. Always has been.

I on the other hand says, based on the hadith, since Shaban can be 29/30 depending on the moon, and Ramadan can be same. That if Shaban is 30, like this year, Ramadan "must", emphasis on must, be 29.

He vehemently declined and said Ramadan can still be 30 irrespective, if the moon is not sighted or the weather is not clear.


My question here is, is he right? Or am I?
Because this has been my notion for a long time and I'm certain a lot of people share the same narrative as well.
