I have this friend who is crazy about engagement rings. Recently she went visiting to her boyfriend's and when she came back she told us that he promised to marry her so she was gonna get herself a ring. And she did! The very next day,
We had an argument about it, we're like a group of 4 friends, and some ladies stood for and against the motion. I personally didnt buy the idea, cos I love the whole getting down on 1 knee business

So I thought to bring it up here and seek your opinions,

Scenario 1:
A guy promises to marry a girl

Scenario 2:
A guy asks a girl to marry him

Do they translate to the same thing? i.e a proposal hence an engagement.

A guy promises to marry a girl and A guy asks a girl to marry him are two completely different matters.

If a guy promises to marry a girl, it means he would mary her one day just that he needs to be ready and well prepared and it will take some time

If A guy asks a girl to marry him that means he is ready and well prepared to marry her and by than, perhaps the go down on one knee will exist.

Personally I believe it meant that way

A guy promise 2 marry a gal,he wants to v a full access 2 d thing without any hinderance n a guy askin a gal 2 marry him is ready 2 accept it weather it is durable or not 4eva

a man promising to marry you is in no way the same as a man asking you to marry him.

think about it i promise to take you to london on vacation with me when i get a ticket or will you come to london with me i have a ticket for you

Well, speaking from personal experience when a man ask you to marry him HE MEANS RIGHT NOW not five years from now or ten years from now, HE IS TALKING ABOUT NOW,

A man promises to marry you is like A promise ring without the actual ring, I wouldn't get my hopes all up if I was you, just live life to the fullest and do not give it a thought,

When my husband proposed to me HE HAD GLEAMERS IN HIS EYES, I think he was crying, he said he wasn't but whatever,

So the different between PROPOSED AND PROMISED is entirely DIFFERENT from my experience in RELATIONSHIP counseling,

exactly what I look forward to. not necessarily glimmers but at least a longing, but glimmers wont hurt.

I love the analogy about a promise to go to london and a ticket to london ( makes alot of sense) thats what am gonna use to explain to her when next I see her.

I see nothing wrong with that I mean he promised to married her she is probably trying to tell him "I am ready"

It was simply said,

A promise to marriage is like a promise without a promise ring,

A promise to get a ticket to london isn't exactly credible and ACTUALLY the way people don't keep their promises, IT DON'T MEAN CHIT,

Imagine this,

A man saying baby I promise to marry you, then turn around and acts if he single and a bachelor,

A promise without the ring,

These are two different things as the previous posters have stated, he is definitely not ready yet.
