Hello everyone, hope y'all are having a splendid day...

It's me again—Hilary Okoh (public speaker, uplifting writer, social influencer) —bringing fresh content(s) to help you refine your speaking as it relates to word pronunciations and speech coherence. My reference material is the BrE (British English) and RP (received pronunciation) to be precise. I'm not a trained phonetics teacher, just a lover of the art and an eloquent speaker to say the very least. I have a Bsc and Msc in pure mathematics and computational mathematics respectively so that says how professionally 'unqualified' a phonetics teacher I am. However, here I am, please do see if you could learn a thing or two from the lesson.

Hypothetical Examples:

• Please gentlemen and ladies, don't endure a toxic or abusive relationship geared towards marriage just because you sense you are soon getting old, outliving your twenties, and your biological clock ticking.

Correct pronunciation:
tug zik // not "tor zik"
gi yed // not "ji yad" nor "gi yed"
be coz // not "be coss"
Bye yor lor gee cole // not "baa-or lor gee kal"

• 'Arise oh compatriots, Nigeria's call obey' chanted by the Ghanaian supporters who visited the stadium.

Correct pronunciation
come pay tree ots // not "come paa shun" nor "come paa trots"
Nai jeh ree ah // not "nine ji ria" nor "nai ji ria"
Gar nay yan // not "gar nyan"
vi zit // not "vi sit"

• Enroute the city, please ensure you don't drive too fast okay, I don't trust the vehicles condition on tarred roads especially, bearing in mind huge traffic this december period, it could be fatal, and caused major concern, says our mechanic.

Correct pronunciation
vee e cool // not "ver hi cole"
tarrd // not "tiled"
de sem bar // not "de zem bar"
fay tohl // not "far tal"
con sen // not "con sign"
serz // not "saze"
awa // not "aaah"

• My names are Kehinde Olufemi Oladipo.

My names 'are' is very often said by many in everyday spoken english, but it is wrong in the context used. The truth is your NAME comprises your first name, middle name (if at all) and last name, which makes up your full name. So when asked what your name is, your full name is expected as the response, and how many full names do you have: one.

Hence, my name is Kehinde Olufemi Oladipo.

• At the market I intend to buy some pineapple, sour sop, vegetables, pepper, salmon, ahmond with my coupons and some fast food from MacDonalds on my way back.

Correct pronunciation

mar kit // not "mar kett"
pyne a pool // not "peh nai pole"
sawa sop // not "shawa shop"
verj tay bool // not "ver ji tay bole"
peh pa // not "peh peh"
sah mon // not "sal mon"
ah mond // not "al mond"
cue pawns // koo pon
mak daw nawld // not "mak doe nald"

• Stop acting like a tortoise, last month you promised to get the job finished wednesday the 5th February, but today makes it thursday the 8th April still nothing has become of your commitment

Correct pronunciation
tor tis // nor "tor tor-iz
Monf // not "mont"
wenz day // not "wed nes day"
pheeth // not "pheevth"
feb yoo wa ri/feb ri // not "eb waa ri"
athe // not "ate"
ay prol // not "ay pray" nor "ay prail"

Other pronunciations:
Divorce ---- dee voss // not "die voss"
Diploma ---- deep low ma // not "deep lor ma"
Nurse ---- nerss // not "noss"
Medicine ---- meh di sin // not "med sin" nor "meh sin"
Oil --- oeeeeel // not "or yeah" nor "or yell"
Google ---- gooo goal // nor "gor goal"
Fasten ---- fah sin // not "fah stin"
Hasten ---- hey sin // not "hey stin"
Book ---- boke // not "buuuk"
Look ---- loke // not "luuuk"
Obvious ---- ob vee yoss // not "oh vyoss"
Souvenir ---- soo veh neh // not "saw veh nia"
Accent ---- ak sent // not "ah sent"

Hope you learned something from this lesson, feel free to make corrections, add contributions or seek clarity on the aforementioned or related subjects. Follow me on instagram http//instagram.com/hilzvoice as I would be posting subsequently videos on various speaking techniques, and also accent tags for many of us who are interested in acquiring the British accent. Thanks very much, and have a great Sunday.

Improve your pronunciations first, before your accent. This cannot be overemphasized.
