An interviewer said I should come with my payslip for the last three months, whereas I've never been a salary earner.
so I don't have a payslip.
please advise me on how to go about it.
The interview is next week.
Tell the interviewer you have not been on paid employment before. But that as a self employed individual, you earn an average of "X" amount monthly.

Be prepared to answer the question, 'Why you want to leave your self employed job'... you can say to gain experience.

This is one lie which will burn you later when you get the job and you are asked to bring your credentials. Part of the documents they will request for is the employment letter given to you by previous company, and it usually contains information like terms and conditions which includes salary. They do this to verify if you are actually who you say you are.

If you told the HR you earn N100,000 at your previous work place whereas your employment letter show N60,000, they will deny you the job because you are dubious. No company will want to employ a shady employee. It's such that forge document to dupe the company.

Your approach is dubious and fraudulent. HRs are smart.

But the approach in the OP is perfect because it tells the HR that the job seeker is smart and knows his worth. If the pay they are offering is good, it should be left to the job seeker to accept it, reject it or even request for more.

You see, if the job seeker successfully keeps his previous pay private and he gets the new job, the HR will be marveled when he discovers that he actually earned way lesser than they offered him. This the HR will find out from his credentials which must contain his employment letter from previous company. That alone will tell the HR that they employed a smart person for the job who will wriggle himself out of a tight angle to get his desire.
No Sir! the approach does not show you are smart. It shows you are a NOVICE. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing special about how much you earned previously. What counts is that you know the value you have to offer and the average pay for the position.

What if I don't have a pay slip? My current workplace doesn't issue one, they just pay you like that.
Most organizations dont give payslip. But you can request for it if the need arises.

'I hear you Sir'. Meanwhile, for the sake of clarity and if you comprehend the part you quoted, the N100,000 stated is a variable that meant the amount an individual earned from his/her previous employer.

That said, I have worked with 8 separate employers and in position to advice individuals who are willing to listen and learn.

...and also lie

Alot of you are answering like first time or junior level workers.

At any interview, ask for a drink if you need one. Cross your legs if you're more comfortable that way. Ask for the a/c to be adjusted if they need to, wear business casual if no dress code is given, don't beg or grovel (even in your visa interviews!), ask for other benefits besides salaries and room for growth, you don't have to give your salary, but you can give a range, also monitize all benefits and add to the figure, go high, not low, finally be as confident as a muthafvker!

And see how the job will be yours. You might miss a few opps but the real big jobs will be yours, confirmed. I don't want push overs, insecured, sissys to run my companies.

Ok. Get the experience first. After then if your employer refuses to increase your salary... apply to another company.

Learn how to use Nipex portal to submit tenders, learn how to apply for DPR certificate on Ogisp portal, learn how to apply for product codes with Nipex et al.. master all that concerns your job role and demonstrate same.

If they do not increase your pay after working with them for a full year (and learning above things I have highlighted)....apply to another company.

One thing Nigerian HRs and recruiters need to respect is the privacy of job seekers. It's intrusive to ask or compel a job seeker to state the salary his previous company paid him monthly. They ask this question just so they can know how to price you down below what the vacant role is offering. Or perhaps to know if you will be demanding far more than the role offers.

The best way to beat that stupid question is by telling those who ask tje question that such is confidential, which is why you won't want to disclose it.

If they press further, tell them that the reason why it is confidential is because your previous company kicks against present and ex-employees of theirs revealing their salary structure.

If they press further, tell them it won't be fair on your previous company if you reveal the salary structure just as this prospective company won't like to see an employee or ex-employees of theirs exposing their salary structure to others or on social media. Make sure you say all of these with an innocent face and watch how the nosy people will change subject. smiley

Nonsense. They can't state the amount they want to offer you because they believe it should be private for now, yet they want to know about your previous salary.

This method is DRAMA. There is no need for it. Do your homework before the interview to know the average rate for the job.

You can flip the table, "I earned "X" (state the amount earned at your previous job) at my previous job and have a minimum expectation of "Y" (state the average rate from your findings) for this role.

Meanwhile, at a point in your career no one will ask you how much you earned previously. The question would be, 'How much are you asking for this role?' Here, you negotiate.

No sir, not all HR managers will ask for the employment letter issued to you by your former company. Maybe a HR manager in an SME might make that blunder, but most structured companies will not do so. sad

They would rather write to your former company to request for information, on you.

Another thing is that the breakdown of your emoluments might be included on a separate sheet, as an attachment to your letter.

So if the appointment letter which does not have your total salary stated on it is submitted, how would they know what you earn?

Some candidates should just tell just tell the interviewers that such information falls under the clauses of the non-disclosure agreement they signed with their former employer, and the NDA is still in force. But you would be happy with a salary that is in the range of X amount, per month. cheesy

Read it again... He encouraged a would be employee on a salary of 50K to change it to 100k in order not to sell himself short... Read carefully in between the lines too.

Op merely suggested you evade or deflect the question, which is more honest.

This approach will be for a beginner. Some prospective employers even request for payslips from previous employer. Above response is too dramatic...I strongly discourage it.

I think what is important is for the job seeker to know his/her relative worth and do your homework to know the average salary scale for that Industry or Job role.

Come to think of it, let's say you earned N50,000 at your previous job, and you are aware the role you are interviewing for can pay N200,000. Must you tell the interviewer you earned N50,000

If I am to advice, the appropriate answers to consider are:

1. "I believe you have a rate for this job role"
2. You probe... "How much are you offering for this position"
3. If you have done your homework or know your relative worth, "I have a salary scale between N150,000 - N200000 in mind" or you name the minimum salary you can accept.
4. "I earned N100,000 (mention the amount you earned previously) at my last workplace, and believe I deserve a better compensation, if they paid me more, I may still be with them"

Bottomline is that you should know your stuff. Make sure you are valuable, an asset, resourceful..that is what counts.

Whenever you attend an interview, go there with a mindset that you are there to help the company achieve their goal, they need you as much as you need them. So be composed and confident.

I don't think this your response addressed the issue.

The question is about current salary and not salary expectation.

Let's be practical here, how do you fill a job response form on a job site that asks for your current salary?

Will you write your salary expectation in the column? Won't they say you are lying? Because most times you have to back up your claims...

So the thing is that the job market is really tough and most times all these approaches don't work here. If you are in a clime like the US job market where asking for those kind of questions are outlawed, yes they make sense.

So my advice will be make yourself valuable like you pointed out. And when I say make yourself valuable in this time and age, I'm saying develop your Tech skills.

Why Tech skills? It's the only space that right now that the demand is more than supply.

It's only in this space I have had HR folks complained that someone didn't show up for interview and HR has to pick her phone to call the person the following day. And when the HR Lady asked why he didn't show up for the interview, his response was, 'the description of the location is not on the invite, warm regards.'

So, young folks, you are or you should be in the business of 'gapology' or gap analysis. This really makes you entrepreneurial and valuable that no gatekeepers will ask you 'personal questions'.

This is a bit quite easy for me. You tell the truth but wrapped in a well garnished unverifiable lies.
If it is 200k I have in mind but I currently earn 70k. You can go either of these routes

1. My gross salary is 840k per month but the company rents a two bedroom flat for me worth 300k per annum; of an average in a year I get a bonus of between 200-500k per annum; the staff bus picks me up everyday and I am entitled to a free lunch that is worth about 300k. I am actually looking at a range of about 2.5million per month if I won't get all these benefits.

2. I have currently work in this recent capacity for 2years at 840k per annum. I am currently due for promotion any moment from now and because of my impressive appraisal scores, I should be looking at between 1.5-2.0million as my salary range. I am looking at 2.5million range for this role in your organization

Second is more realistic. Some jobs require you to include your previous employer as a referee and they could verify this information during a call if they decide to have one.
