‘i Was Brutalised For Making U-turn In Front Of A Retired Admiral’s House’ by egift(m): 2:48am On Oct 25, 2010
When Mr. Lawson Tekena, a graduate of microbiology, decided to make a U-turn in front of a building on Tombia Road, GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, it did not occur to him that that singular act would land him in trouble.

He said what was uppermost in his mind was to avoid the traffic jam on the road so that he could get to his destination on time.

But the spot Tekena chose to make his U-turn was in front of the house of retired Admiral Festus Porbeni, a minister of transport under Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar’s regime.

Tekena told PUNCH METRO that some security men and naval ratings approached him and asked him why he wanted to park his car in front of their boss‘s house.

He said all his explanations to the naval ratings that his mission was just to make a U-turn in front of the house and not to park his car were rebuffed.

Tekena said before he could explain further, the naval ratings and the security men pounced on him. He added that one of them carried a big stone and hit one of his car‘s side mirrors.

Sensing danger, he said he attempted to manouvre his car so that he could leave the spot. But he said he was prevented by the naval ratings, who proceeded to give him the beating of his life.

He said as he was being beaten, one of the naval ratings dashed into their boss’ compound and brought out a gun.

Tekena said, “He (the naval rating) tried to drag me into the building, but I tried my best to resist him. Even when the crowd that gathered at the scene told them to leave me, they did not listen. The Naval men dragged me inside and began to punch me all over my body.

“The one who punched me while I was in the vehicle corked his gun and put it on my head apparently ready to shoot me.

”In the process, one of the bullets fell down and he went to hit me on the head with the butt of the gun. At that point, all my body was covered with blood, which was gushing from my head, precisely at the point where the rating hit me.

“In that state, the naval rating still asked me to lie on the ground. That was after he had removed the magazine of his gun and fixed it back. But I refused to lie down.”

He said after he was released, some officials of the Rivers State Government House took him to a hospital in an ambulance.

Tekena, who was wearing a cap to cover the deep cut on his head when he spoke to our correspondent, said, “When he (naval rating) carried his gun, I thought about my three daughters and my wife, who just gave birth and said if this man killed me here, what would become of my children? It would have been tragic because my new born baby wouldn‘t have known his father.”

He said he reported the incident to the police station, where the Divisional Crime Officer sent six of his men to investigate the matter.

He said when the policemen arrived at the scene, the naval ratings refused to listen to them, adding that at that point, the police decided to leave him to his fate.

Tekena explained that as they were about leaving, one of the naval ratings, whom he identified as Abubakar, appealed to him that the matter should be forgotten.

“This was the same man, who called me a ‘bloody civilian’ and asked me where I was when militants were everywhere in Port Harcourt,” he said.

But Abubakar, who appeared to be the most senior among the naval ratings guarding the house, told our correspondent on the phone that he was just a peace maker.

“I wasn‘t there. But when I came and saw them fighting, I asked them to stop and that was all,” he said.

Tekena, however, faulted Abubakar and wondered how he could have fought five men, two of whom were armed.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Tony, said Tekena was treated like an animal on the fateful day, adding that if not for the crowd, the Microbiologist would have been shot by the naval ratings.

“They dragged him (Tekena) into the building and by the time they decided to bring him out, his shirt was already torn while his entire body was covered in his blood,” the eyewitness noted.

“The crowd that gathered at the scene knocked violently on the gate and pleaded that they released Tekena. Many people parked their cars outside to watch the show of shame. But by the time the naval ratings released my friend, they had already torn his shirt and hit him with the butt of the gun. His body was filled with blood”, Tekena‘s friend, who gave his name simply as Zukky, also said.

When contacted, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Dr. Rita Inoma-Abbey, said she could not comment on the issue because she had not been briefed.

Efforts made to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Navy in the state, Mr. N. Yeibo, were abortive as he did not pick his calls when our correspondent called his two lines. Also, he had not responded to text messages sent to his line as at the time the paper was going to bed.

Our correspondent could not also reach Porbeni, but his Personal Assistant who spoke on the telephone declined comments. She demanded to know our correspondent’s “interest”in the matter.

“What is your interest in the matter? Are you Tekena‘s brother? I don‘t know what your interest is, but whatever it is; I will call Abubakar and tell him what you have told me. I don‘t know why you want to publish it in the newspaper; I don‘t know what your report will do,” she said.

Wow! A bunch of animals! A friend was just telling me a few days ago that if I ever go to Nigeria (I haven't been there since I was real young) that if I passed by,say, Tinubu's house and made a stop or slowed down that his security details would accost me and try to harass me! What kind of country is that that public roads are now off limits to the citizenry

Am not rooting for anybody, but one sure thing I have learnt all these years is: A SOFT ANSWER TURNS WRATH AWAY.I said this because its possible that someone was trying to claim right or wrong whereas they are not adequately prepared for the consequences of their actions. No matter how animalistic those ratings were, a simple Oga no vex could have ended the whole fiasco but when you started arguing how you are citizen of the country and you have the right to make a U-turn anywhere then 1 would lead to 2 and 2 to 3 and so on and so forth.Am not supporting anybody sha, but am just thinking.

All things being equal, that is. These people have a very nasty orientation. Sometimes they see your humility as vulnerability and capitalize on it to brutalize you. Imagine the other 'olodolistic' she-goat asking what publishing the news will accomplish.

And how exactly do you know this? However I find it difficult to understand how such a trivial incident could lead to such massive violence. What exactly did this guy Tekena say to the naval ratings that set them off- all 5 of them(!) for that matter? lipsrsealed

Naval Ratings again!

I think the problem with the Nigerian Military is first and foremost, a lack of discipline, and for the Navy, I think these ratings aren't seeing enough action (compared to their counterparts in the UK and USA), thats why they unleash their barbaric tendencies on helpless civilians. Just like in the Uzoma Okere case, I strongly believe that the behaviour of ratings attached to senior officers is a reflection of the character/personality of the senior officer in question. In other words, the senior officers are not better than the ratings.

It is only in countries like Nigeria that the military believe they're above the law. In the UK and USA, these guys would have been arrested by the POLICE, but we all know even the Police in naija will be scared to confront them.

Wole Soyinka once said " it is only a mad man that would challenge a man that holds a gun". As much i dont subscribe to brutality from the armed forcemen, let private civillian citizens be careful with their actions and words. 90% of us would do worse than what these forcemen did if we were given the power. "Do you know who i am?" that sentence has caused a lots of trouble for people. Nothing stops you from walking away from a potential imbroglio, swallow your pride and pocket your ego for your family's sake. Remember these Armed Forcemen are human too; gentle answer turns away wrath. If you suffer a permanent body damage, hundred newspaper publications wont return your lost body parts. Be wise.

in this advent of mobile camcorders and smart phones? folks should learn to make use of the tools in their possession, why didn't someone covertly record the brutality? it was what also assisted in Ms. Uzoma okereke's case against the navy in her own saga.

The naval ratings, nigerian police, mopol, the nigerian army - they are all the same trigger-happy animals.

The girl that was brutalised by naval rating in lagos some 2 years ago was lucky to have video evidence and her dad was also an ex-army officer.
As a result she had support and backing to fight her case. She later got cash compenstaion for the brutality.

Now Tekena may not have the video evidence or the support from any powers-that-be to get justice.
The police even came and left without doing anything because they are birds of the same feathers. Brothers in crime.

May God save us from these criminals in the nigerian armed forces.

this isn't a military regime duh!~. . .the fact that you are a trained naval/military officer isn't a licence to brutalize anyone whose guts you hate!, you should stop giving bad excuses to justify bad actions, put the blame where it belongs!

I don't care what he said and did not say, he shouldn't be brutalized over such, neither does he deserve to lose his life. .  . . when educated folks like you keep bringing up this line of reasoning to justify the most barbaric acts in the society then emancipation of the Nigerian people will never see the light of day.

naval ratings are not demigods to be worshiped, their duty is to serve and protect Nigeria and her citizens, if they felt offended by whatever the man said, it is more appropriate if they take it up with him in a legal court!. .

those animals should be charged with attempted murder!

Typical

He could care less

Our correspondent could not also reach Porbeni, but his Personal Assistant who spoke on the telephone declined comments. She demanded to know our correspondent’s “interest”in the matter.

Really? SMH

Oh, What a Pity.

Now, Why in the hell do we have paid soldiers guarding a retired Soldier? WHY?!!

Is Porbeni still in government?

Did they freeze Porbeni's pension?

Is Porbeni handicapped? He can't work and hire private security?

Are Nigerian Naval ratings that jobless? or the Nigerian Military that Moronic?

Is this a joke?

Why are we paying soldiers to guard Retired Soldiers , who by definition are now CIVILIANS?!!

Is he leading a military expedition in his bedroom?

SMDH @ My Country.
