A catalytic converter is a car component that helps reduce emissions and environmental pollution from vehicles. It is a metal container that is built into the exhaust system. It is filled with a chemical catalyst, usually a mixture of platinum and palladium, and helps to convert the vehicle's emissions into harmless gases. Typically, a faulty catalyst will result in one of these four symptoms that alerts the driver that replacement may be required.

1.
Reduced engine power

One of the first symptoms often associated with a failed or precipitating catalyst is a reduction in engine performance. The catalytic converter is installed in the exhaust system of the vehicle and therefore may affect the performance of the engine if problems arise. A clogged converter obstructs the exhaust flow while a cracked noxious gas escapes. Any fault can have a negative effect on engine performance and cause a reduction in power and acceleration as well as fuel consumption.

2.
Rattling noise

Rattling noises under the vehicle are another symptom of a faulty catalytic converter. When a catalyst ages due to over-rich fuel blends or is damaged internally, the catalyst-coated honeycomb nets inside the catalyst may collapse or break apart and cause rattling. Rattling may be more obvious when starting the vehicle and will worsen over time.

3.
Sulphur odour from the exhaust

During engine combustion, sulphur-containing gasoline becomes hydrogen sulphide. A properly functioning catalyst converts hydrogen sulphide into odourless sulphur dioxide. If this fails, you may notice a sulphurous, foul egg-like odour from the exhaust. Unburned fuel remaining in the exhaust gas due to the poor catalyst, generates the odour and may even cause dark exhaust smoke.

4.
Check that the engine light is on

A defective catalyst can also cause a flashing Check Engine Light. The oxygen sensor and the air-fuel ratio sensor in modern vehicles monitors the efficiency of the catalyst by monitoring the gas level in the exhaust. If the computer detects that the catalyst is malfunctioning or catalyzes the exhaust gases properly, the Check Engine Light is activated to alert the driver of the problem. A variety of other problems can activate the Check Engine Light.

LAST WORDS

The catalyst is one of the most important emission components of modern vehicles. Otherwise, the vehicle may cause excessive emissions that are harmful to both humans and the environment. If you suspect there is a problem with your catalytic converter, have the vehicle checked by a specialist to determine if the car requires catalyst replacement.

I locked up a kazeem bc of this part. Took the car to his workshopand left for work, came back after work to pick the car and a week after, I observed d criminal has removed d catalyst.

Does a faulty or removed catalyst lead to increase in fuel consumption? Some People seem to have this opinion. Please shed light. Thanks

They call it indomie in our mechanic workshops. Mine was removed and I noticed the change in sound and confronted them but the guy bolted. I can safely say more than 50% of cars that have passed thru our local mechanic workshops have had their indomie removed and sold to some ready buyers.

I did a small research on this and discovered that its main function is emission control. It really doesn't affect consumption persay. Our local mechanic see it as consumption regulator rather than emission control device.

My catalytic converter (indomie) was removed job February when I went to check my exhaust system. The local mechanic told me it has finished. I was astonished. Till today, I am yet to replace it.

How does one fix this and what's the average cost.. I am having high emission from my vehicle.

jst note these are not repairable, you buy a new one to fit, don't fall into buying a used one, besides these can be deleted, and it has no effect on your car, the only thing you should worry about is ur )2 sensors which in turn can be deleted!

It is not fixable, you can either replace it or forget it! We don't have an emission test in Nigeria so your car won't fail emissions test as we have in the EU and America

Not true though, these can be deleted and some cars have more than others, these cat converters are put in there cos of govt regulation to cut emissions not for car efficiency!

Can you say this for all vehicles? Cos from what I learned, some vehicles sound will change when such thing is removed.

He has to replace it. High emission is totally bad to our environment. If you can't afford to replace it, sell that your car to someone who can replace it.

Re: 4 Typical Signals Of A Faulty Catalytic Converter by t2luv1: 12:29pm On Sep 06, 2019
Since there is no annual emission inspection requirement in Nigeria like in some states in US a simple straight pipe to close the gap will reduce the car noise. Though this is bad for the environment cos it increases pollution. Just make sure the car was not manufactured for California market cos cars made for California require different converter which are very hard to find.

Most cars imported into Nigeria do not come with catalytic converter.

From my personal experience based on my uncle's car many years ago, most cars in Nigeria don't need it; he had a Datsun 280x (American specification).

When the car reached 30,000km and the warning light for replacement of the converter came on; what he did was to disconnect the sensor from the exhaust, remove and replace the converter with a straight pipe of the same diameter as the the rest of the exhaust - and voila! no problem whatsoever.

Anyway, that was then; newer technology may now preclude some cars from such application - so its better to cross check before doing anything so drastic.
