Kanu is a dual citizen of Britain and Nigeria, just like Sowore is that of US and Nigeria; and just like I am of US and Nigeria. Both Kanu and Sowore have had issues with the government of Nigeria in recent times; though the issues were not necessarily criminal, but political, in nature. They were/are arrested and locked up, and the keys thrown into the Lagoon, so to say. Despite being citizens of two of the most powerful countries in the world, each of these individuals were not intervened for by their respective other countries.

Do you know why? The reason is this:

By international norm, if a dual citizen runs into problem in his original country of his birth (which he ostensibly have travelled to with that country's passport), the legal or political or diplomatic jurisdiction of the second country is limited, if not nullified. That is why the British did not interfere strongly in Kanu's case and that is why the US will not interfere (or do so weakly) in Sowore's case. That is why the Igbo-US military man who was killed 2 years ago in Owerri died just like that, without the US saying even a word of helping catch the killers.

This is a lesson for those of us who are dual citizens. The US or UK or other countries with high civil society standards will come to your aid if as their dual citizen you have a problem in another neutral country. But as long as that country is your original country, then it's not a neutral country. In that case, you are OYO. Please take note and be wise when you are in Nigeria, if you are a dual citizen. Don't be over-tripped by your dual nationality.

I read where one Bini-Canadian police man was bragging that if he goes to Benin City and something happens to him, that Canada will make sure someone pays for it. That is a big, fat exaggeration.

Omoyele Sowore is not a citizen of the US. He's got a Green Card, but not citizenship - at least not yet. IIRC, he has not applied.

Then that makes matters even worse for him in that regard. The US many not offer any consular interference even for a second on his behalf. Just curious, why would anyone stay in the US that long and not have a citizenship?

Lack of US citizenship was in part what cost Okonjo Iweala the World Bank presidency. If you must live abroad, then do so as a citizen of that country ASAP, where possible.
