Tammy Abraham has said that his mother was left in tears by the racist abuse directed at the Chelsea striker after he missed the final spot kick in last month’s penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Super Cup.
The 21-year-old insisted that he was not affected by "nonsense" posts on social media and would not shy away from the issue, while his father told him that it was "nothing to worry about" as the abuse was not to his face.
“I remember speaking to my mum, she was emotional,” Abraham told the Daily Mirror. “She was in tears. She was just thinking ‘Why him? Why him?’ It’s obviously not nice, seeing your son getting abused.
“For me. I’m always a strong character. It doesn’t affect me as much. But it could affect people who don’t have my personality.”
His father's reaction was slightly different.
“My Dad said to me: ‘Listen, son, this is nothing nothing compared to what we’ve been used to. This is over social media. It’s different when people say it to your face. So this is nothing to worry about. These are minor problems.'
“So yes, it didn’t affect me as much because I don’t listen to the nonsense. I just let the ball do the talking.”
Abraham, who has scored four goals in his past two appearances, said that he learnt of the abuse in the changing room when he checked his phone.
He added: "I wasn't going to shy away from the situation, although I did have some supportive messages. The other side is not nice to hear.
"I went through a lot of emotion after the penalty miss. I had experience of taking penalties last season, big ones as well. Everyone misses penalties. To miss the penalty, I was devastated. I had a lot of abuse after."
The striker also said that he was thankful for the support he received from Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard and his team-mates following the abuse.
Lampard has called on Twitter and other social media
"Frank Lampard always had his arm around my shoulder lifting me up, the boys as well, it was like I never missed with the way they supported me and lifted me up,” Abraham said. “That is exactly what I needed.”
