Deciding to carry his own baby took years of soul searching, but nothing could prepare him for the reality of pregnancy, as both a physical experience and one that challenges society's fundamental understanding of gender, parenthood and family. He quickly realises that what to him feels pragmatic, to others feels deeply confusing and confronting - this was not part of his plan.

Transgender activist Freddy McConnell has appealed to be recognised as his child’s father after legal medical documents means that he can only be registered their mother.

Freddy, a transgender male, used a sperm donor fell pregnant in 2017, and his pregnancy was documented in new BBC documentary, Seahorse: The Dad Who Gave Birth. A seahorse is a term coined for transgender men who give birth naturally, as in nature it’s male seahorses that carry and have the offspring. However, after carrying his child to term, Freddy discovered he could only ever register himself as the mother on the birth certificate.
