Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged women in the maritime industry to stop marketing gender inequality as reason for their lack of appointments into political positions.

Speaking at the 2019 World Maritime Day celebration in Lagos on Thursday, Amaechi urged women to focus on building their competence and lifting one another.

The former Rivers State governor said women get appointments on merit.

“I don’t agree with you on the idea of gender because the struggle is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, it’s everywhere in the world. It’s about the class you belong because there are millions of women and men who are dying of hunger,” he said.

“Women get appointments because they merit the appointment. I have female friends who are very educated.

“And one is Amina Mohammed who was a special adviser to the former Secretary-General of the United Nations. It was when Mr President visited the United States and saw Amina that he was impressed with her and made her a minister.

“Amina got to where she is today because she has a vision and wouldn’t listen to distractions. Life is about courage.

“So I will urge women in maritime to stop begging because it is their entitlement. Women are manipulators and can manipulate men to sign what they wouldn’t want to sign. Women are more brilliant.”

Minister of state for transportation, Gbemisola Saraki, who also spoke at the event, called for an increased amount of scholarship and mentorship to boost female participation in the shipping sector.

Trash. Trashiest trash in the trashdom of Trashistan.

Why not leave the subject if you don't know what to say. Women's participation in national life is a complex and sensitive issue.

It's men who take advantage of gender inequality for political, societal, economic and educational gains, if he didn't know.

Come on! He's too enlightened to be sounding like this

That is how some people want to force two poorly behaved women of questionable character and intelligence on us in BBNaija, because a woman must win.

A lot of women think they should be handed things because they came to this world with a vagina.

amaechi eyebag don day deepen. they should allow women to express themselves anyhow they can. ministers should do his own job first before telling others what to do. minister of what sef? why cant these idiotic ministers respect their ages?

i just day tell one guy say chris oyakhilome prefer to go america go call Benny hinn instead of Adeboye and oyedepo.

TB joshua and adeboye are enemies. then suleiman jumped into the case blasting T.B Joshua and calling himself a boy of adeboye. the elderly man adeboye did not call the small boy suleiman to order to stop and make peace with TB joshua. instead he kept quiet and inciting the two people.
the elderly man fronting humility has not washed the feet of anyone. he has not eaten with sinners. but his feet are washed in private jets. suleiman, just like his master has bought his own private jet.

none of the imam or muslims religion leader came out to speak against the xenophobic attacks. they all keep quiet like dumb babies. they have nothing to say. OBJ is in SA sitting with the president while Buhari is picking his gworo gap teeth with his dry skeleton jubril body. senseless people. what the northerners came out to decry was wike demolished a mosque. the man is developing his state.

the politicians in nigeria are rogues that is why they allow criminal churches and mosques to thrive. there is no church in saudi arabia. they do not allow the construction of churches in muslims dominated countries. and the ones there, to go in they have to scan you, humiliate you and check your ID before they let you in.
they do not allow christians to share their faith with muslims but they send muslims out to convert poor people using food and empty promises. if you have any brother in any muslims dominated world, call to check on him. even muslims in egpyt and those arab countries are seeking a way out of the oppressions by their fellow muslims. they have no freedom or rights. the women are itemized and considered sex obejcts.

do you blame the minister? can anything good be appointed by Jubril from Sudan?

Please tell them o... They complain about how men dominate bla bla bla, as if we're not given equal opportunities in this modern society.

Now feminists have abused the whole thing and turned it to an opportunity to abuse and blackmail men. lipsrsealed

The men in govt are mediocre so they should let some equally mediocre women in too if they are serious...

We should all be mediocre together...

*Modified* this is a tongue-in-cheek comment, I am not being serious

Safarigirl should advise midnighter....

From different Ted Talks and research, it has been discovered that women do not always have grits in complicated things.
They just pause and give up. I think one such talk was the one by the owner of Khan Academy, where he said women would come to complain that something was wrong with them for not understanding certain equations; thus, they need to give up.
Meanwhile, their male counterparts will tell him how they feel they're missing something in the equation and would definitely get it

Who stopped women from contesting?

Not who, but what

Intimidation, endemic misogyny in educational, political and religious institutions, pressure on women to prioritise marriage and "keeping a man" above all else from a young age, low prosecution rates for rapes and sexual assaults, gender wage gaps (lower financial empowerment)...should I continue...

These are insidious and entrenched societal ills that need tackling, he shouldn't be making flippant remarks about seducing men into signing contracts

Why can't he just leave it if he has nothing in particular to say

You don't get it, I'm talking about entrenched systems and perceptions that reduce the chance of the woman succeeding

If it's a black man trying to succeed abroad and the system gets him you won't write paragraphs about how black man does not have the right attitude towards understanding mathematical formulas

This is not about feminism, if you don't see how women are deterred from political life via societal factors all the time then we cannot help each other.

Pointing out the embedded flaws in a system is different from toxic female entitlement.

Ok now. You can start addressing those social factors too in your own little capacity. All I know is that men won't back down or soft pedal on their own ambitions just because women want more opportunities. Go hard or go home is the name of the game honey.

Oh oh! I get ya now.
But I will only talk when it's the system causing the setback and not the black man giving up.
It might be true that the system has created little rooms for women but it's also true that a lot of women are not pushing hard enough.
See the women that went for the last presidential race. Their major support comes from men that feel they can do it. So, I will tilt my opinion towards his argument that women should aspire to be better since they have the capacity for it.
