The Oyo state government says churches and mosques with revenue-generating ventures and businesses will not be exempted from paying taxes and applicable levies. John Adeleke, executive chairman of the Oyo state internal revenue service, made this known while addressing journalists on Sunday in Ibadan. The taxman said the government is working to capture other areas that had not been explored to generate more revenue instead of increasing taxes on business enterprises to boost internally generated revenue (IGR). On the government’s decision to exempt churches and mosques from paying taxes, Adeleke clarified that those with revenue-earning ventures and other businesses would pay taxes, levies and other fees as applicable. “A culture of an efficient and leak-proof collection in all areas of revenue would be put in place,” NAN quoted him to have said. “Instead of tax increment, we are emphasising the efficient collection of existing revenue and we are bringing our informal sector into the tax net. “The good performance of Gov. Makinde has also changed the attitude of the stakeholders toward tax payment as most of them are responding without any reminder. “However, the economy is a big challenge for many companies as this has an implication on Pay As You Earn (PAYE) remittances.” The chairman further explained that some taxpayers that were reluctant to respond are being served reminders after which thorough enforcement would follow. “However, the economy is a big challenge for many companies as this has an implication on Pay As You Earn (PAYE) remittances.” The chairman further explained that some taxpayers that were reluctant to respond are being served reminders after which thorough enforcement would follow. He. however, assured the people that any step to be taken to enforce the tax drive would be legal. This is quite a nice idea. The mosques & churches are really making money in tunes of millions. It’s more or less like a limited liability company lately . Most aren’t for worship alone anymore, they’re now profit oriented , they’ve schools their member’s children can’t attend so it’s nice if they pay taxes 67 Likes 6 Shares |

In addition to this, I suggest the FG kickstarts the process of completely washing her hands off sponsorship of pilgrimages to Mecca or Jerusalem or Olumo Rock. Let people fend for their spiritual and religious needs by themselves. 49 Likes 7 Shares |

All their aim is to collect from masses....we no kuku see wetin una dey use the ones wey una don collect do.... of course tax their school, tax their hospital...:but their no justification to tax church offering.....even advance country classify churches under non-profit/ charity coys.... Weda u collect all their money...it’s of no benefit to us....last last...no road, no light, no security Infact nobody should be paying this government tax...instead we should use our money to provide what for ourself what the tax is meant to provide.. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Marotzke: Schools and hospitals don’t pay tax. Islamic organizations don’t do printing press. What are they printing? In fact they don’t have any business they do cos no one will manage it. The only taxable business that Churches have are bookshops and sometimes printing press. There’s a church I know in Ib that sells borehole water. The only other tax that can be derived from churches is PAYE of its workers earning salaries. 1StopRudeness: 1 Like 1 Share |

A church with a school that charges tuition fees must pay applicable tax on the school. An Islamic organization that has a mosque and a printing press , must pay tax on the printing press. The days of packing lucrative businesses under a religious garb to avoid the taxman is coming to an end. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Very welcome development and long overdue. The problem is that the huge revenue that would be derived will be looted As usual with other tax payers funds 2 Likes 3 Shares |
