Constantly, people keep devising means of expressing themselves or communicating their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, verbal expression does the trick, and other times, stronger forms of expressions (say body piercing or body tattoos) send a clear and direct message. There is really no right or wrong way to express your thoughts visually or verbally; as long as you are being understood, then the end justifies the means (at least most times).

We owe quite a lot to technological advancements and the internet for making it easier for people to express their thoughts and feelings. Phone calls, text messages, instant messaging, etc. have made it easier and more exciting for people to connect with others. But of course, you’re not here to read about the history of communication or its transformation over the years, so let’s get to it.

They are stereotypical
Indeed, the saying “less is more” is true in a lot of cases, but other times, less is just what it is—less. Meme stickers, like smileys, are a lot more simpler way to respond to text messages. However, its simplicity is as much a minus as it is a plus. In themselves, memes are meant to be funny in a certain way, but sometimes when they are used as replies to texts, it somewhat becomes stereotypical. A friend who eagerly narrates his crazy experience at the store would most likely wants you to reply with actual words from your heart rather than some preset meme sticker that he has probably seen a lot of times.

Incorrect usage can be annoying
Not everyone is a great conversationalist; some people don’t just know how to express themselves in any way, while others are downright annoying at it. Those on the “annoying” train sometimes abuse the use of meme stickers by using them in contexts where they’re absolutely not needed. Although the same thing applies to smileys, meme stickers make texting these set of people worse because meme stickers are almost the size of a billboard.

Inhibits verbal expression
You know how we have gabby and laconic people in the ‘real’ world? Well, don’t be surprised if in a few years, the existence of gabby people becomes a thing of the past. The reason is quite clear: meme stickers help you cut on the amount of words you need to type while texting. At first glance, (or any number of glance in fact) this may not seem like a bad thing as words are not the only form of expression, however, you most likely wouldn’t want your chat pages to contain more images than your device’s photo gallery.

So should people stop using meme stickers? Absolutely not. Users should always be conscious of maintaining an healthy balance such that actual communication is not entirely lost. Meme stickers add a lot of humour to conversations, and that is more reason why they should be used moderately and correctly.
