Don't Write People Off. by Nobody: 11:47pm On Oct 03, 2019
'Don't write people off' is a quote my eldest brother occasionally uses while driving home a point. I know I've heard that quote from him a few times, had struggles as to what to tag this thread and this quote popped up.

I had an encounter with a blind man days ago and this encounter has been a life changer for me. In this man, I found something I won't have gotten if I'd judged a book by its cover. I'll try to make it as brief as I could with the hopes that someone learns something, 'cause I did learn a lot.

It happened that last week Friday, I went into campus for my usual morning classes and unfortunately for us, my classes were canceled 'cause there was a Senate seating. I had walked half way to my lodge before making an unnecessarily U-turn like something was controlling me to go make a withdrawal that could've waited. The usual me was walking sluggishly towards the banks direction when a bus driver called on me. I had to turn back just to be sure I wasn't going to answer to another's call. In his words "Are you going to bank road? Please, get this man to bank 'A' 'cause he's blind" all these were before I could either say a 'yes' or 'no' and he zoomed off with his passengers. I sensed the road was deserted and they waited for someone to ply that route of which I happened to be the fortunate one. At a glance, he looked unkempt with a black old back pack, but I didn't care. I suddenly realized I had a job to do.

I introduced myself, he did same and the first instruction was "Let me know when we're approaching a bump". As I led him by the hand, I realized he was oozing with sweat, but I could endure. On certain occasions, we had to switch hands to avoid making him walk too close to the road. We talked, we jumped bumps, we raised our legs over stones and by the time I knew it, we were at the bank. I asked him if I should take him to the ATM queue or into the bank building and he responded by saying he wants to get a new ATM card 'cause the old one expired. We got into the bank and I had to get a form from customer service for a request for replacement of an expired card.

We filled the form and submitted, but the customer care agent began harassing him that his signature was inconsistent. He asked that she calls the bank manager or direct us to his/her office. As they were arguing, the bank manager came and equally stated that the signature was inconsistent. They begged him to change from writing to thump print, but he refused. Stating that he has his reasons for not wanting to change signatures and one of which was that he will soon gain his sight. At this point, I was shocked and almost felt like crying. He told them to tell him what they could see(difference between what's on the system and the one he has written down) but they refused, telling him it's against their principles. I understood that very well, but needed to know if both signatures were completely different, and they said "yes". A blind man who signs his signature like an art work would definitely make errors 'cause he doesn't see what he inscribes. After wasting over an hour, he was made to sign again and the card issued to him.

I gave him the issued card and we needed to choose a pin on POS. When we got there, I offered to take his hand to where the keys were so he could input his pin, but he said something I can't forget so soon, he gave me a 4 digit pin to input and I told him it's meant to be confidential, but he said "What more information could I possibly hide from you when you just filled in my bank details?". I looked at him, then proceeded to enter the pin. We left the bank and I needed to know where I would drop him, but in stead, he wanted to know where I was headed. I told him and we went there together. On getting there, we charged his gadgets and laptop for another 2 hours- I saw a blind man operate a laptop. Went together to where he needed to make payments for a programme he was applying for. He's so learned and full of hope. BTW, he's in his 50s, wasn't born blind. Became blind in his 40s with a good job and businesses. I wanted to be certified after school, but he opened my eyes to the fact that it would be better for me to get certified next year. We now talk like everyday 'cause if he doesn't call, I would. I feel he may be in danger when I don't see him, only to remind myself he's been taking care of himself. I feel there's still so much to learn from him. Things I won't have been exposed to if I'd not met him. I am happy he's undergoing medication to gain his sight medically in University of Ibadan Teaching hospital. I wished I were God on meeting this man to help restore his sight.

Brilliant. The world needs people like you. Everything you did was perfect since you didn't try reaching for his balls.

Aunty, this is very normal. I can't see any lesson here or anything spectacular. Next time, drop him in the bank and go your way. He will be fine. Remember he moves around everyday and you will not always be there.
By not doing that, you should understand how she is different from most people including yourself, and why what she did is certainly NOT very normal.

Going out of your way to be of help to another, is completely different from just helping.

By normal I meant him using his laptop, moving around on his own inspite of being blind etc. Basically trying to live a normal life. I still cannot see the lesson here. My opinion. I'm sure everybody has thiers.

Well done maami...you tried.

This country is so messed up so much so that we are afraid to assist the seemingly needy. Honestly, I wouldn't have done beyond getting him to the doorstep of the bank and handing him to security to help him. I have actually heard of a walk-in that became trouble for the helper. Glad this worked out well. Hails.

May his sight be restored. Congrats to him in advance. Hope he has loved ones around him. I think the eyes is the most important sense. It is well.

You are on the right track sir. Just walk forward a bit, then turn centre and wall forward, then take a middle turn and walk sideways. After that, take a right turn...you've arrived your destination grin

He doesn't base here. He only came to apply for a programme and from what he said, he left his state a year after he lost his sight 'cause friends deserted him. He only talked highly of a brother and his late father.

I think he has the assurance that it'll work. He explained some medical terms of a nerve being found in one of the eyes with which glasses would be recommended bringing images closer.

Be careful about what? Is it that you think I can't tell when someone genuinely needs help?

I get the point you're driving at, but he's not one of those to be fearful around. Remember, I filled his bank detail for him. Even saw a printout of his bank information with his photo attached. grin
