you should learn to put your own identity and language above others. we are not english people we are Yorubas, Igbos, Efik, Ibibios e.t.c. we are different nations packed into a creation by the selfish interests of english people.

correcting english grammar errors means upholding english, it is the duty of english people to uphold and elevate english culture while it is the duties of Yorubas, Igbos, Efik, Ibibios e.t.c to uphold their own culture.

note I used did not capitalize english.

Lol and our national language is still English. We are already in the situation, we need to move forward. Stop defending a stupid attitude from somebody who is supposed to be in higher education

By the way, if he wrote this thing in igbo or yoruba and it still had the wrong grammar, would you still defend it?

Of course, you dont need to capitalise English, this is an informal forum and not an essay.. who told you to capitalise anything??

This is not about English or culture or whatever. Its about indiscipline and a wrong attitude to learning

I don't know ohh. Maybe it's some kind of complex lol. Anything 'oyinbo' or 'unAfrican' must be ruled out.

So what is African about not taking corrections and writing things so that people can understand them? What is African about embracing mediocrity?

Another rubbish.

Broken and pidgin English are different.

Google Farooq Kperoogi for the difference.

"another rubbish "

lol this is quite funny and expected but please keep your grievances and frustration to yourself if you can't find a polite way to make up a reply, thank you .

Mind you we as Nigerians or Africans have various lingua deviations from the standard ENGLISH LANGUAGE and in some sense are all same.

What!

Those examples you cited are completely different

He came to a public platform to lament the state of his department. he is presenting his case to us, the public, and we cant get through up to one sentence without being assaulted by one grammatical blunder or the other. And when it was pointed out to him, he couldnt even modify it; in fact he continued to argue

If he writes an assignment for a lecturer, and the person is overlooking his mistakes to get the meaning, thats because the lecturer is looking for particular key-points which are more urgent in that context. And even at that, at a point, with writing as shoddy as this, he will have to remove some marks for poor communication

Why do you guys keep making excuses for the wrong thing..he should proof-read his writing before he posts an academic complaint, is it how he will continue until he graduates? we have a lot of problems in this country
There is something like "fluent in spoken and written English" in the job market as well. The point is that, no serious organization will employ someone that writes poorly in this way. It is not all about understanding the communication. On the basis of his written English, one can vouch that, he does not have the IQ to pass the course. No one is looking for a perfect write up, but this is below minimum for an undergraduate and even for some of us that are not English masters.

What made you conclude the exam was objective?
einsteine:

Rubbish.

This result shows the students are dunces in this particular field of study.

It's computer science. It's objective and not subject to the examiner's opinion like an exam in History or Sociology would be, so there can be no cause for victimization.

Note that some students still scored good marks. The rest are just dull and should do something that's more up their alley.

Computer Science. The name sounds simple, but by the time you jam raw mathematics courses from year 1 to final year plus Programming courses, You will be begging to graduate with your mate. Computer Science Should be Renamed As Applied mathematics so that people will understand what they are going for. Many people Who doesn't do research before applying for a course mistake it for going to University to learn Microsoft Word and Power point.

Therein lies the problem. Most students are ignorant of what they will face.

I am not surprised by the results. It happened in my school and a neighbour was a "victim" ditto a sister institution (where no one has graduated with a first class from the department in its entire history). I believe the problem is two faced:

1) The quality of students admitted into an department/institution determines the results of such department/institution. As painful as it might sound to her alumni and students, LASU does not admit the best of students and the results of these students will eventually reveal the malasie in her admission standards. If you admit academically weak and indolent students, you will get poor results. Furthermore, the area where LASU has her headquaters is in one of the most deprived and ghoulish areas of Lagos. Most of the residents are poor, unintelligent and there is a lack of government presence. This perpetuates a culture of poverty, servitude, low income, brutish attitudes and agberosim. The end result is poor academic standings by her students. Which is why it is not startling that LASU convokes less first class graduates than her sister school, Unilag.

2) The above cascades into here as these lecturers are not well grounded in their pedagogy and literally know nothing. Also, due to the severe lack of exposure as a result of the afore-mentioned environmental factors, these lecturers develop a cretinuous mentality of "A is for God, B for me and C for the most intelligent". This further contributes to poor grades after all her VC once said "LASU is better because she makes the process of attaining a first class difficult". Such stoopid reason is why LASU bested Imperial College London who convoked 44% of her graduates as first class in 2016.

Oh there goes some one I can actually support his view and opinion, I think what I sensed was the reaction that followed the first person to point out the errors.

we Nigerians just don't have that polite way or manner of resolving things, it's like we emphasize much more on the criticism and less on the correction we can actually give out.

I myself do not have a problem with the first person who pointed out the errors, he did it same way I would correct my English students but the follow ups just seem like a slaughter and yes the op didn't try to take corrections as well which seem to aggravate the problem here but anyways I totally agree with you on this one.

In your opinion english is Nigeria's national language but most people don't care about english or even communicate in english in Nigeria.

it is not about wrong attitude to learning.. most people are limited to their teachers/lecturers knowledge even though they can do their own research and perform better... most times its about who is doing the teaching/lecturing and how the teaching/lecturing is been done..

where they given tests and class works to test their knowledge?

I am not defending stupid attitude because the OP is not stupid. you are the one who puts anything foreign above the indigenous cultures of the country. Again, its about how the OP was taught and you understanding that there is no such thing as "higher education" because education does not end in university..

I honestly enjoyed your write up, thanks for this excellent piece, most of my study in literature and english as a writer had little bearing to what I learnt from school, the idea of higher learning is really not what some of us see it to be.

Its not my opinion. The country's national language is english whether people care about it or use it to communicate or not.

i meant a wrong attitude to learning in terms of him not listening to the advice he was given. I personally dont know whether the department of computer science is any good or not.

i didnt say OP was stupid. he was arguing with a simple correction which i think is a silly way of thinking

Its not foreign in as far as we have adopted it. And you didnt answer my question. If he wrote that thing in wrong yoruba or igbo, would you be saying all this?

Yeah education does not end anywhere! you can say that again smiley so why are you guys not open to learning how to improve your written communication?

Whatever we are doing, lets do it well and stop making lame excuses

you know what is really funny, majority of us who feel we are right to criticize the OP which evidently we are, still aren't intertwined with the proper use of the ENGLISH LANGUAGE, I can practically start assessing our comments and rule out words, contextual meanings, punctuation marks, tenses that don't make no sense to the statements but hey I guess our OP was way off the chart on this one and a good polite reply would have calmed the nerves.

the same way a chinese is not expected to speak good English because they don't teach them in English is also the same way a Nigerian is not expected to speak good english even if they are taught in english...

a lot my classmates spoke their languages to each other once the teachers were not in class or once school had finished for the day, this means in most homes people don't communicate in english.

it has nothing to do with embracing mediocrity, some people are intelligent due to their environment, parents, upbringing e.t.c and some are not intelligent due to the examples above.

We are not talking about intelligence, of course he must be intelligent. But why cant he communicate his ideas effectively? Why is he writing the wrong thing and then expecting everybody to squeeze their brain trying to read it?

Its actually disrespectful to come to address people in public and behave in a backward manner. If you go to read the bible at the front of your church, you wont do so with an open blouse and then bark at people who tell you to zip up

Are you telling me that Nigerians are so stupid that we cant even handle two languages? When you close for the day, will you go home and address your people in nonsensical Igbo?

How can you compare a chinese and nigerian? So if you are taught something for decades, you should be communicating at the same level as somebody who didnt learn it at all?

if you go to school and start chattering to people in your language and you dont learn anything, is it anybodys fault?

Agreed. However as a graduate in a Nigerian university, there are instances where a lecturer will fail an entire faculty. I did a course which I passed in my first attempt in first year. 3 faculties in the university must pass through that course. Only 3 students or fewer had an A about 70% had a F, the remaining 30% have their own share of D,E and C.
I did my investigation and no student had a B.
I was shocked.

On paper, its the national language while in reality most people don't use it.

it is foreign and not adopted it was imposed on the education system but our ancestors/politicians didn't and have not removed it.

if he wrote the wrong thing in his language I still wouldn't correct him as long as I understand his message..

how to improve his skills and grades is more important than his written or spoken communication, its his skills that will get him jobs in future.

On paper, its the national language and its that paper he will use to communicate with people. What he speaks in his own personal reality is his own business. We dont know him, his prospective employers dont know him, he is just one person competing with millions of people so he should communicate with others in a way that matches his intellect

It was imposed and now we have adopted it, just like hundreds of countries all over the world. Its not right but thats how it is

You still wouldnt correct him even if he wrote wrong Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa, and you are the problem here. Our ancestors who came up with our languages are not stupid, languages have rules for a reason. Why not learn them so that people can understand you? Ok if somebody solves a mathematical problem wrongly but uses the right method, you would award him full marks?

His written communication is a big part of his skills and grades, how will he write his project if they cant read what hes saying? Its his communication that will get him through the door in future interviews

you cannot solve a mathematical problem wrongly if you know the right method, in maths the right method will lead to the right answer..

What is there gain?
Does this make them the best department?

Why will they allow lot of student to be admitted into the department and next thing they want to do is reduce them again.

This department is a big mess and something need to be done about this.

Even the 400 level student are already having an extra year while the ones that had an extra year before is having another one again
This is painful and tragic

Please better advice the 100level student to change department because most of them can't survive it.
