As at when due is correct bro, i have been using it in my work place " Carried out inspection as at when due". More grease to your elbow is an illustration to commend hard work. Therefore to me, more grease to your elbow is correct. |

@OP, thanks for bringing this to the awareness of people...even if it's 'copy and paste' like someone commented, thanks for bringing it here. There are some other words that people use wrongly too: there/their, where/were, it's/its, I'm/am, this/these 1 Like |

What the OP posted is correct, cos if you try to browse on these statements, you'll find out that Nigerians have been murdering English thinking we're speaking English.lol what he posted is just little of the blunders Nigerians make everyday #shalom! 1 Like |

Re: Some Popular Grammatical Blunders. Every One Has Made At Least Two Times by Nobody: 11:50am On Oct 18, 2019 |
dickofglory: Every sentence you referred to as grammatical blunder is not a blunder in the real sense of its definition. It's a deviation. English is not our first language but a second language. You don't expect us to speak the language like the native speakers. What you termed incorrect is Nigeria's English. We have different 'Englishes' the world over. American English, South African English, Australian English and UK's English have various deviations from one and the other in terms of phonetics, syntax, semantics and grammar in general. Let's stop this mentality of correct and incorrect English sentences or statements in Nigeria. No native English speaker can use your indigenous language like you. You will always find issues with a learner of your language. Don't put yourself under any linguistic yoke. Nigeria has come of age to have her own variety of the English language. Let's nativise the English language in order to express our local contents. Where a Nigerian man says: be my eye in that meeting ", a Britisher would say: represent me in that meeting." Let me say this more authoritatively, no learner of the English language can use it like the native speakers. Why? They determine correctness and incorrectness of their own language. Anyway what counts in any given communication is understanding. There should be no qualms as long as your audience understands you. I'M AN ADVOCATE OF NIGERIAN ENGLISH. |

adamadwealthy: There is a difference between Nigerian English and a grammatical blunder. Dont insult the intelligence of Nigerians by excusing bad grammar as "Nigerian English" Being a Nigerian or a black person doesnt mean we should speak a lower grade of English than anybody else or English that's full of mistakes just to make ourselves feel empowered Making a mistake in grammar is not a crime, we can correct the person and move on "Lacking behind", "He is matured", "the reason is because" Are all wrong! And there is nothing "Nigerian" about them. Being Nigerian is not synonymous with not being able to learn something or correct your mistake |

uncle005: "As and when due" means "as it is due and when it is due", meaning carrying out the inspection as it is supposed to be carried out, at the correct time So it cant be "as at when due" |

FrLukas: There is nothing like morning or afternoon vigil. One definition of vigil is according to Merriam Webster which defined it as a period of staying awake when sleep is customary. What period of the day is sleep customary? Night. |

midnighter: You only assumed you understood my stance. May be re-read my comment and you will have a better grasp. I said what the writer called blunder is " deviation " as a result of the English language being a second language in our country. Go and learn from experts in the field of language and you will discover that no learner of a foreign language can use it perfectly like the native speakers. You're bragging about another man's language and have no plan to save your own indigenous language. I wonder why some Nigerians love to identity with everything foreign to the extent of labeling their fellow countrymen not smart for using the English language "incorrectly". There is nothing called substandard language anywhere. No matter the language, whether pidgin or creole, if the speaker and the audience can understand themselves, it's a complete language. Language primarily exists for communication. If it can perform that role, no issue whatsoever. I'm not insulting the intelligence of anyone, it's just that you're suffering from colonial mentality. 1 Like 1 Share |
