Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday likened the rate of malnutrition among Nigerian children to what is obtainable in war-torn countries.

She said must be made to address the situation.


Mrs Buhari made her position known in a video she posted on her Facebook page and other social media channels.

The video was packaged by her pet project, Future Assured.

She lamented that one in every three Nigerian children under the age of five was suffering from malnutrition.

She said a country desirous of attaining its potential for greatness could not afford to allow such a situation to continue.

Mrs Buhari said, “Research has shown that one in every three children below the age of five in Nigeria suffers from least one form of malnutrition.

“This equates the situation in Nigeria to what is commonly found in war-torn countries. Yet, Nigeria cannot be addressed as a war-torn country.

“Giving our children the right combination of food they need for a proper mental and physical growth is a very important national duty that we all must perform.

“Nutrition experts say that we don’t need huge sums of money to do this. When our children are not allowed to reach their full mental and physical potential, our country will automatically fail to meet its potential for greatness. We cannot afford for this to happen.

“Let us help to reduce all forms of malnutrition. Join me to fight malnutrition in children.”

In a separate message also posted on Thursday, Mrs Buhari called on Nigerian women and girls to cultivate the habit of monthly breast examination.

She said the exercise would lead to early detection and save lives from deaths occasioned by breast cancer.

Mrs Buhari wrote, “I call on all Nigerian women and young girls to make a commitment to always do a monthly self-breast examination because early detection is key to saving lives.

“Let us all join Medicaid Cancer Foundation to #Walkawaycancerng.”

Attached to the message are photographs of where she was being presented a branded T-shirt with the inscription ‘Walkaway Cancer’.

The pictures showed Zainab, wife of Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu, and a lady presenting the T-shirt to the President’s wife.
