What many churches call "speaking in tongues" today is nothing like what the Bible records in the books of Acts and Corinthians. The supposed miracle that occurred on the Day of Pentecost in A.D. 31 (Acts 2:4- was one of communication—apparently both in the speaking and the hearing. The Greek word translated "tongues" is glossa and means "languages." The miracle of speaking in tongues meant that every member of the audience could hear in his or her native tongue (language, see verses 9-11).

The speaking in tongues of the pentecost day was different.Christ only used it to enlarge and strengthen his church.The reason why the people were able to hear their own languages is just for them to really believe.It is a real miracle.When one speaks in tongues,he interacts with God in the spiritual realm, so you don't have to understand him. Even narrating while it should not be used now. That was to the christian church of corint. Now to us. The issue of tongue speaking stop or ceased a long time with The gifts of prophecy, healing, tongues speaking. This is evident as after the times of the apostle we no longer heard of this. Am sorry i have forgotten the actual verse in the book of Galatians that really state and explain this. But am very sure of this.

if you actually take time and read the Bible instead of flipping it open once in a while and just picking any verse and start reading it, you would understand that there were jews from different land and each had their own language(native tongue). Some traveled to a place outside of their land and could speak the language of the people whos land they were going to along with their own language. In the other land they often met people from home and became close with them.whenever people from the land that they were in were plotting against one of them then they would speak in there own tongue(language) so that the plotters/devils couldnt hear/understand what they were saying. That is what speaking in tongues means. All of that nonsense that people in the church do is not real. They may make themselves believe that they were speaking in "tongues" but its all nonsense. READ YOUR BIBLE!
