How does colorism play out in America? An old children’s rhyme captures the definition of colorism and its inner workings:

“If you’re black, stay back;
If you’re brown, stick around;
If you’re yellow, you’re mellow;
If you’re white, you’re all right.”

Colorism refers to discrimination based on skin color. Colorism disadvantages dark-skinned people while privileging those with lighter skin. Research has linked colorism to smaller incomes, lower marriage rates, longer prison terms, and fewer job prospects for darker-skinned people. Colorism has existed for centuries, in and out of black America. It's a persistent form of discrimination that should be fought with the same urgency as racism.

Origins

In the United States, colorism has roots in slavery, because slave owners typically gave preferential treatment to slaves with fairer complexions. While dark-skinned slaves toiled outdoors in the fields, their light-skinned counterparts usually worked indoors at far less grueling domestic tasks. 

Slave owners were partial to light-skinned slaves because they often were family members. Slave owners frequently forced slave women into sexual intercourse, and light-skinned offspring were the telltale signs of these sexual assaults. While slave owners didn't officially recognize their mixed-race children, they gave them privileges that dark-skinned slaves didn't enjoy. Accordingly, light skin came to be viewed as an asset in the slave community.

Outside the United States, colorism may be more related to class than to white supremacy. Although European colonialism has undoubtedly left its mark worldwide, colorism is said to predate contact with Europeans in Asian countries. There, the idea that white skin is superior to dark skin may derive from ruling classes typically having lighter complexions than peasant classes.

While peasants became tanned as they labored outdoors, the privileged had lighter complexions because they didn’t. Thus, dark skin became associated with lower classes and light skin with the elite. Today, the premium on light skin in Asia is likely tangled up with this history, along with cultural influences of the Western world.

Enduring Legacy

Colorism didn’t disappear after slavery ended in the U.S. In black America, those with light skin received employment opportunities off-limits to darker-skinned blacks. This is why upper-class families in black society were largely light-skinned. Soon, light skin and privilege were linked in the black community.

Upper-crust blacks routinely administered the brown paper bag test to determine if fellow blacks were light enough to include in social circles. “The paper bag would be held against your skin. And if you were darker than the paper bag, you weren’t admitted,” explained Marita Golden, author of "Don’t Play in the Sun: One Woman’s Journey Through the Color Complex."

Colorism didn’t just involve blacks discriminating against other blacks. Job advertisements from the mid-20th century reveal that African-Americans with light skin clearly believed their coloring would make them better job candidates. Writer Brent Staples discovered this while searching newspaper archives near the Pennsylvania town where he grew up. In the 1940s, he noticed, black job seekers often identified themselves as light-skinned:

“Cooks, chauffeurs, and waitresses sometimes listed 'light colored' as the primary qualification—ahead of experience, references, and the other important data. They did it to improve their chances and to reassure white employers who…found dark skin unpleasant or believed that their customers would.”

Why Colorism Matters

Colorism yields real-world advantages for individuals with light skin. For example, light-skinned Latinos make $5,000 more on average than dark-skinned Latinos, according toShankar Vedantam, author of The Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Elect Presidents, Control Markets, Wage Wars and Save Our Lives. A Villanova University studyof more than 12,000 African-American women imprisoned in North Carolina found that lighter-skinned black women received shorter sentences than their darker-skinned counterparts. Research by Stanford psychologist Jennifer Eberhardt found that darker-skinned black defendants were twice as likely as lighter-skinned black defendants to get the death penalty for crimes involving white victims.

Among the usually lame messages left by fraternities and sororities on campus sidewalks, there have been some interesting phrases left by Western Michigan University's new colony of the national fraternity for openly gay and bisexual men.

Delta Lambda Phi's official national slogan is "What others hide in shame, we boldly embrace with pride," despite what the sidewalks say. With 20 active chapters across the country, Delta Lambda Phi is proving homosexuality and fraternity life can actually mix. However, the Greek community has not been known for its liberal acceptance of homosexuals. WMU's chapter of Delta Lambda Phi was organized after its president said he probably wouldn't be able to get a bid at an established WMU fraternity because he is openly homosexual. He did not want to go back into the closet in order to join the Greek community.

At other colleges, Greeks have made an effort to welcome homosexuals. Cornell University, has an organization called Greeks United Against Homophobia that is "committed to making fraternities and sororities a safe place where the true ideals of brotherhood and sisterhood can emerge."

Homosexuals are still one of the most openly discriminated-against groups in society. They are the subject of ridicule, prejudice and hate. There certainly will be Greeks that will accept Delta Lambda Phi into the community without a question, but there will probably also be some ridicule and resentment.

There really shouldn't be. Any Greek that would not accept homosexuals into the community would not only be exhibiting bigotry, but outright ignorance of the fact that the term "Greek" implies a long history of accepting homosexuality. Perhaps it is due time we examined the true nature of Greek brotherhood by taking a little trip back in time.

Fraternities are said to have their origin in the Middle Ages when young men would go off to foreign countries to study in the new universities at Bologna or Paris. Men from the same countries clung together in the notion of brotherhood.

In early America, the founders of collegiate fraternities chose to name their organizations using Greek letters (Phi Beta Kappa being the first, in 1776), drawing upon the high culture of ancient Greece. Fraternities slowly spread across the United States, and what we know as the "social fraternity" has its roots in the mid-to late 19th century. Following tradition, these men chose to name their organizations using Greek letters.

Because Western civilization has chosen to emulate and draw upon the accomplishments of ancient Greece doesn't mean that the cultural standards in their society were comparable to ours. In fact, the Greeks were far more modern in their acceptance of homosexuality. Most of the greatest Greek citizens were active participants in homosexual sex.

Manly love was a common fixture of everyday Greek life. The Greeks practiced what was called pederasty: open sexual relationships between older men and adolescent boys. Both Plato and Xenophon explored the beauty of this love in their "Symposiums."

For any Greek that opposes the existence of Delta Lambda Phi, every time he sends a younger brother out for a "naked run," he should think about the Athenians. Every time an older member of the frat uses a paddle adorned with Greek letters to strike young pledges in the bum, he should think of the Spartans. And every time a Greek proudly displays his letters on his clothing or writes Greek letters all over campus, he should understand that in using the Greek name and alphabet he is representing a society with a rich and beautiful tradition of homoerotic sexual idealism.

Black women continue to be diagnosed with HIV at disproportionately high rates relative to white and Hispanic/Latina women, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Despite recent progress that has seen new HIV diagnoses decrease by 21 percent from 2010 to 2016, black women still accounted for 6 in 10 new HIV infections among women in 2016.

“We know that African American women are disproportionally affected by the HIV epidemic in the United States, and the interventions that have been laid out have not impacted this group in the same way it has males and nonblack women,” said Dr. Michael Angarone, assistant professor in the division of infectious diseases at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The researchers looked at HIV data collected over a seven-year period and used a model to measure the disparity among different groups called the population attributable proportion, or PAP. They modeled the reductions in new HIV infections that would have occurred if the rate of infections among black women were the same as white women. They found that the PAP decreased from 0.75 in 2010 to 0.70 in 2016.

In other words, HIV infections among black and white women would have been 75 percent lower in 2010 and 70 percent lower in 2016 if rates of new HIV infections were the same between white and black women. Additionally, in 2016, 93 percent of infections among black women would not have occurred.

This supports the argument for strengthening HIV prevention and care efforts in heterosexual black men and women to close the racial disparity gap in HIV infection among women.



The report did not cite specific initiatives that were in place to reduce HIV in black communities but they did note that “reducing racial disparities among women is needed to achieve broader HIV control goals” and that “applying tailored strategies to reduce HIV incidence in black women and their partners are important elements to achieving health equity.”

Earlier this year, the Trump administration laid out a plan to end the U.S. HIV epidemic by 2030.

Why black women are hit hardest

Though HIV diagnoses among women have declined in recent years, largely as a result of robust public health efforts, more than 7,000 women — 19 percent of all new cases — received an HIV diagnosis in the United States in 2017.

African American women are hit hardest by HIV as the rate of diagnosis is 15 times as high as that of white women, and almost five time that of Latino women. In fact, HIV/AIDS-related illness is among the leading causes of death for black women ages 25-34, the CDC says.


A number of challenges contribute to the epidemic among black people, including higher rates of poverty; lack of access to health care; higher rates of some sexually transmitted infections and smaller sexual networks; lack of awareness of HIV status; and stigma underscoring the need for strengthened, more focused and innovative efforts to address this disparity.

I don't find a R blood type in my research. Would it be RH negative you are referring too?

I do understand that RH negative shows somewhat a resistant to the HIV strand although not total.
