If you are a Nigerian with a Nigerian degree and live in the U.S. or U.K. They regard your hard earned degree as nothing. It's about time Nigerian government wake up, remember that White people first hated them and still do even though they like their oil, and make things really hard for Whites living in Nigeria just like the Whites are making things incredibly difficult for Blacks.

The new President of Nigeria should work on getting this done instead of working on visiting the U.S. President, the so claimed Nigerian allies, without oil, I don't know what the relationship will be.

AFRICAN universities were again at the receiving end as the World Universities Webometric ranking released yesterday showed that only University of Cape Town, South Africa was listed among the first 500 best universities worldwide.

Also, on the continent's ranking, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife came a distance 44th position on the list of the first 100 best universities in Africa.

These declarations emerged even as the National Universities Commission (NUC) yesterday insisted that programmes offered by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) have not been accredited.

Daily Champion gathered that of the 500 universities listed, United States of America and Canada accounted for 238, while Europe, Oceania, Asia and Latin America got 211, 21, 20 and nine universities in that order.

Although only Univeristy of Cape Town made the 500 list, it however did not rank among the first 200 universities in the world.

According to the NUC only four Nigerian universities OAU ranked 44th followed by the University of Ibadan (UI) on the 65th position, University of Benin (UNIBEN) 79th position and the University of Lagos on the 90th slot made it among the first 100 universities in Africa.

Declaring that the country's rating has further dipped this year, the NUC noted that in 2006, five Nigerian universities UI, OAU, UNIBEN, University of Lagos (UNILAG) and University of Jos, (UNIJOS) ranked among the first 100 universities in Africa.

However, proffering reason for the poor outing, the NUC attributed it to the fact that previous research findings by academic in the nation's universities were not respected.

Meanwhile, the NUC through its executive secretary, Prof Julius Okojie yesterday reiterated that the programmes offered by NOUN were not accredited.

Prof Okojie who spoke during the meeting with the University management said on the status of the institution that "it was a statement of fact that NOUN's programmes had not been visited/accredited by NUC".

The NUC in its weekly bulletin released on Monday noted that to receive approval or recognition of the establishment of programmes or institutions was quire different from programme accreditation.

According to him, programmes could only be visited for accreditation when they have mature which in the case of NOUN and other distance learning programmes will be after three years, promising to send accreditation team to assess the programmes of NOUN at the appropriate time.

They should be required to have a Certificate for Culture appreciation and Certificate for Pidgin Englsih

y dont we even start by saying they should be qualified (in anyway) for the jobs they get.

Up to 20 years ago,foreigners respected our degrees.Could it just be that things have changed because our standards have dropped considerably instead of playing our usuall blame game

If 2 people went to, say Japan,one with a Nigerian degree,the other with an American degree,guess who will be better placed. Our education system is fatally flawed .

Last time I checked,I haven't seen millions of white people flooding Nigeria looking for jobs,when they start coming, u can give the WAEC holders jobs ahead of graduates from the US/UK.

Nigerians don't need weak leaders. They need people that make things happen. Nigerian department of education suppose to ensure that students learn things that will help them compete in the global economy.

There would be no such thing as "Nigeria" if we didn't adopt a foreign language. every civilization has adopted a foreign language and i guess over time a new language develop from it.

you never know, pidgin english will eventually evolve to an official Nigerian language. only it won't be called "pidgin english" anymore. it'll something totally different.

english is like the latin of the past (funny how english, french and the rest of the romantic languages used to be considered vulgar then).

There's more to it than all these being listed. It doesn't just cover the working aspect, the same thing happens in the educational system.
Many a times, students from Nigeria and maybe other Affrican country gets into Europe and are denied continual education based on their already achieved certificates from Africa.
The European education system would rather have you do those years all over again, not miding the fact that you've already covered all those topics and subjects. Now you begin to ask where the problem lies??

Well its not too far from their knowledge of the high level of "bribery and corruption" in Africa/Nigeria.
A place where sleepingwith the lecturer earns you the best grade on the particular lecturer's subject, a place where with the required amount of influence, you'll come out at the top of your class, a continent where having enough cash buys you the best result with straight A's [/b]even though you were the lousiest and least attendant in class The pnes i feel sorry for are the ones that really earned their merits, Cos they end up being shoved under the same umbrella

Its sad, but we have ourselves to blame. Yea, they might be behind in their"level of education", but the "standard" is genuine. Atleast when someone presents you with their "addition and subtarction certificate in Mathematics" here, you're sure it was merited but there in Africa/Nigeria, when someone says they're a graduate of a university, you want to investigate the amount of truth in it

[b]Someone sits for jamb or WASCE, and fails woefully, but at the beginning ofthe next school year, they've been admitted into the best university in the whole country, and not just that . . the person is studying "medicine" (or any other influential course)

Now how in the whole wide  world do you begin to explain that?? While a poor but sufficiently accademcally inclined soul is left to rot because they don't have the cash nor financial support to pull them through

Not true - its a big lie - I know loads of people who have been recruited from Nigeria to go and work in UK with their Nigerian degree under the HSMP - Highly Skilled Migrant Programme - it is if you don't know what you are doing that you hide under that kind of assertion.
