yes, i've read it.

lots of gory themes and it's rather scary if one assumes some of the characters and storylines were based on actual people and events.

Hey, Tpia. Yeah, gory details. But, were the events not actual?
What do you think about Conrad? Do you think he accurately depicted the African race?
Do you think Achebe was harsh on him?

it seems he wrote about real life events.

the question which achebe tried to address was one of perception.

ie focusing on only a particular view of the subject matter [africa] and refusing to see any other.

at that time, africa was in the grip of the pre-independence movement [i think] so achebe's critiques of joseph conrad were rather representative of the time, imo.

also remember swift's poem:

So Geographers in Afric-maps

With Savage-Pictures fill their Gaps;

And o’er uninhabitable Downs

Place Elephants for want of Towns. (On Poetry: A Rhapsody, 1733)

though this preceded HOD sha.

it was a bad time but i wouldnt say he depicted the african race since africa consists of many different ethnicities all changing into one thing or the other. War is hell.

Hey Tpia.
Whaooo!

Thank. I really like you.

Thank God for your brilliance.
Thanks.

I think Achebe shouldn't have called him a thoroughgoing racist. There was no Political Correctness at that time. And, he was from a completely different clime. So, he was probably shocked by how primitive Africans (black) were at that time.

It was almost difficult for him to believe their humanity.

What Achebe said enraged some Europeans. Conrad was well reverred in Europe and Europeans like stories that dipict them as 'higher/better' beings

^^thanks for the compliment.

i learned about joseph conrad in school but never actually read the book until some years back.

i think it was reflective of it's time and probably actually did represent the mindset of most europeans about africa in those days.

the only explanation i can possibly think of for the state of affairs conrad showcased, was much of africa was at war and things were just on a downward spiral.

Yeah, Tpia, thanks.

Things have changed now , though. But, decadence, war and famine are still prevalent in some parts of Africa. And, govenance has experianced a downward trend in Africa. That spirit of nationalism and pan-Africanism is not dwelling in many Africans.
It seems Africa, stunted by crude and selfish leadership, does not want to roll with the rest of the word.

It is not a palatable story, at all.

God help us.

Nice one, Slap1.
But, be prepared for some crude assessment of the Black man. The tone in the book is not meant to appeal to the politically-correct brigade. It can be described as a no-holds-barred outpouring of literal emotion. Unrefined, crude and rash.
You have to be strong to preserve your confidence as a black man. Otherwise, it could lead to some rude awakening and the probable knock-on effect could be a dent in your confidence as a black man.

the book actually isnt meant to be enjoyed.

understanding it is hard enough.

but it's not really a feel-good type of novel.

Not to be enjoyed, at all. It is a real food for thought in terms racial analysisand  self-examination of worth of the Black man among higher animals. Conrad, as a consequence of this book, has become really unpopular.
And, understanding it can be HARD.
