Bolivian President Evo Morales announced his resignation Sunday, caving in following three weeks of sometimes-violent protests over his disputed re-election after the army and police withdrew their backing.

“I resign my post as president,” Morales said in a televised address, capping a day of fast-moving events in which several ministers and senior officials quit as support for Latin America’s longest-serving president crumbled.

The streets of La Paz immediately exploded in celebration, as jubilant Bolivians set off firecrackers and waved the country’s red, yellow and green flag.

Morales, 60 and in power since 2006, was declared the winner of presidential voting on October 20 by a narrow margin. It gave him a controversial fourth term.

But the opposition said there was fraud in the vote count, and three weeks of street protests ensued, during which three people died and hundreds were injured.

The Organization of American States carried out an audit of the election and on Sunday reported irregularities in just about every aspect that it examined: the technology used, the chain of custody of ballots, the integrity of the count, and statistical projections.

As chanting Bolivians kept up demonstrations in the street, Morales called new elections, but this was apparently not enough to calm the uproar, and the commanders of the armed forces and the police joined the calls for the president’s resignation.

That’s a country where Soldiers and Police men understand the meaning of the phrases NATIONAL INTEREST or GREATER GOOD

if na Nigeria Soldier and Police go help INEC rig elections, INEC GO announce fake results, Government will shout go to court only to go intimidate the judges to play out the wish of the sitting government

Foolish police and army who themselves are suffering too will allow themselves to be used against any citizen that attempts to protest

The problem is no one is getting fooled. Everyone knows Nigeria democracy is meaningless

Such a hopeless country !!!

The first and only indigenous president of Bolivia, this man was more loved by most poor people in Bolivia, but his greed and quest to reman in power was totally unacceptable, what a shame.

He bows out after 13 years in office. With that, he has set a record. He's now Bolivia's longest-serving president. No man has stayed that long in office since that country attained independence in 1825.

I remember the buzz about him the year he was. TIME magazine even did a special on him as Bolivia's first democratically-elected Indian(indigenous) president. The hype was pretty much everywhere to the extent that it captured my attention.

He was more popular with the countryside folks and the indigenous/Indian majority. He was one of them of course. Many of the urban dwellers and land-owning class don't rate him that highly.
I don't know this military commander very well but I think there's a script playing out somewhere. Although, Evo had his own faults too.

It is also safe to say that the pressure will now be on Maduro of Venezuela. The resignation of Evo Morales now means that he has one less ally in the whole of the Americas save the likes of the Cuban head of State and Manuel Ortega of Nicaragua. It also means that Maduro's firmest ally in South America is no more.

This will further change the dynamics of South American politics. But one thing is for sure, his successor is likely to be some die-hard anti-Evo Morales politician. She's definitely going to reverse several of his policies as the days go by.
