HOUSTON — Kanye West has followed the Johnny Cash route and performed for inmates at a Houston jail.

In secret from the public, the star rapper-turned-gospel singer performed songs Friday from his new gospel album “Jesus is King.” He and his choir performed for more than 200 male inmates at one jail facility before crossing the street to another jail facility and performing for a smaller crowd of female inmates.



Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said West’s representatives asked jail officials about doing secret shows.

The Friday concerts were performed two days before West is to speak at Joel Osteen’s vast Lakewood Church in Houston

The events were reminiscent of prison concerts given by country singer Johnny Cash in California.

Along with his choir, the rap icon-turned-gospel musician visited the Harris County Jail in Houston. West told the audience his visit was "a mission, not a show.

The reason I believe Kanye is different is because he did "Jesus walks" even when it seemed a very unwise career move for hip hop artists at the time, and had been rejected by record companies just because of that song who asked him to take it out but he refused and persisted with it.

That move alone said something about him and I have been watching him closely ever since because it takes more than an ulterior motive to have made such a career threatening move. So when this happened it wasn't a complete surprise to me, because although I knew he was arrogant and self-seeking at the time as all of us were at some point, that quality to swim against the tide for Jesus then in a sense, was a very rare one.

And this selfless move to go to the prison to perform to prisoners for free as well, hence my question, what could be career boosting about this particular move?

He didn't need it for anything, in fact it would have come at a personal cost, so couldn't have even bothered. And this should perhaps suggest to you the difference between his case and others who claimed such but weren't sincere.

The truth is that he has taken the name of Jesus to places the church has not been able to take it to, so why not pray for him even though you doubt his sincerity?

So that you'd not have yourself speaking against something that God was about just in case he was true.

His suffering from a Bipolar disorder never changed who he has always been. He has always been the stubborn, egotistic, godlike Kanye who never settles for less until now. Where do you get this stupid idea that someone like Kanye cannot be born again?
