No matter how bad it has been abused, lending a help is good, be it to a family, friend or even a stranger. One way or the other we have recieved a hand of help from someone be it a familiar person or a stranger. The world cannot function properly without help, not even the most powerful governments. We all need help and will always need help one way or the other.

However, be careful of the people you help, the kind of help you render and the extent you go in rendering the help. Some people do not need help, they are just looking for a way to make you let your guard down before they strike. Ask the regular users of Lagos roads, especially at night. You see a passerby beckoning on you for help and you have pity and stop. Then you realise it was a robbery set up and before you say Jack, you have lost all your valuables with major or minor body injuries.

You may go to the end of the world and back just to see someone get the help they need and when it’s time for a simple appreciation, they trivialise the whole thing. They do not know what you have suffered and had to sacrifice just to help them. I have seen a situation where a brother exhausted his whole financial resources just to see his brother through a financial struggle and when the whole thing paid off, he was pushed aside and branded an attention seeker and beggar. He has not recovered from his bankruptcy up till today.

I have also heard of a case where someone tried to help a sister cover up a crime and got dragged into the whole mess. Her side guy came visiting and they got into a fight only for the guy to drop dead amidst the fight. She freaked out and called her main boyfriend to come and while he was trying to figure out what happened and how to help, police showed up courtesy of the neigbours and the lady insisted her boyfriend was part of the murder. If not for her next door neighbour who saw him walk into the compound and confirmed he only got there that morning with call records from his phone confirming so, he could have gone down as an accomplice to murder.

Helping is good. You should render help if and when you can, because you may need one too someday. However, you must be very careful of the people you help, how you help them and the extent you go. Put on your own oxygen mask before you help others breath and watch out for when they will want to yank it off your nose. Help but becareful.
