Good morning and beautiful week ahead.
Definitely, you should know what made me create this topic.
Osu, as mild as it sounds, it can create serious division in a family, trust me.
We all know what Osu is but if you don't, it simply means slave.
Almost every community in Nigeria has a clan, family or village they see and consider as Osu. the question here is who is an osu and how serious is it in your culture. I am from one of the communities in Igbo-Eze South local government in Enugu State.
What Osu people suffered and still suffering in some part of Nigeria is worse than the racism that blacks are suffering in Russia and Italy. Yes, it that serious. The very few things that my father told me about osu(we call them Oghu or Ohu) weren't pleasant to the ear.
According to my culture, these are the things that can make somebody and his generation an Oghu(osu) in my culture

1) When they use you to borrow money and your parents couldn't pay back. This is a mild one though but the stigma is the same. It is mild because you are part of the community and the clan you are from are seen as 'free people' . The oghu tag starts from you and then to your generations.

2) A pledge to the deity. Early difficulty in having children can force parents to go out of the way. We all know how it is, if you don't, just imagine it using Hollywood perspective. Just imagine growing up as kid and fantasizing the kind of girl you would marry and when you are of age to realise that dream with your heartthrob, the parents and family of the girl refuse to give you their daughter's hand in marriage. You take a critical view of yourself and see nothing but a handsome guy with a saggy pockets. You heads to your parents ask them if they have been in any land dispute with the girl's family and they start telling you one thing, one thing about how they had problem having you and they went to one deity and promised the deity that if they have child and it is a boy, he will serve the deity. Heartbroken. you are an oghu in my culture and getting married for you will be an like an "AS" genotype guy looking for wife in the world of "AS". The oghu tag starts from you and continue with your generations.

3) Those that their forefathers migrated to the community and couldn't fight for early assimilation of culture. they appear odd and do things their own way. Serious Osu be this.

4) Those that were bought with money.

In my culture, they married like Chinese people. They get married to their own cousins. these types of osus inter- marry. They also discriminate among themselves. 1 and 2 sometimes rejects 3 and 4 in marriage. 1 and 2 would be like, I know i am an 'oghu' but i have my root from this community.

When an osu man marries a freeborn, the girl and her family are seen as freeborn but this can't be said about the children. Some parents refuse because they don't want their grandchildren to be seen as osu.

When a freeborn man marries an osu lady, their children are seen as freeborn. This is more like green card.
Who is an osu and how serious is it in your culture?
I AM NOT GOING TO PROOFREAD ANYTHING. I accept every grammatical blunder.
