Why going through unnecessary checking that you may not be giving opportunity to do as most smartphone packs come with seal. Until you pay, they will tell you that they cannot break the seal.

Save yourself the stress by buying in a reputable shops, collect your receipts and make sure the IMEI number is correctly written on the receipt. Better still pay through POS or bank (mobile) transfer and make the description looks like "Purchase of Bleep phone".

I can tell by mere looking at a phone if it's fake or original.

The smartphone market in recent times has become saturated with fake phones and many unsuspecting buyers have been scammed into buying fake phones for the price of an original one. Fake phones especially Android phones have become so rampant that one wonders if phone dealers are deliberately taking advantage of their customers.

Some of these fake phones in the market are the so called ‘UK or London Used Phones’ and fairly used phones, there are also fake new phones but they don’t seem to be as many as the used phones. Before, it was mainly top phone brands worldwide such as TECNO, Samsung, Nokia, iPhone, HTC, Sony, LG, Motorola, Huawei and others that had many imitations but now even smaller brands such as Infinix, Gionee, Innjoo and Itel are also been faked.

Most of these fake phones match the original phones almost exactly in design and since most phone buyers are not tech savvy, they are very easily deceived. Many people do not know they bought a fake phone until after a while when they probably meet someone with the original version of the phone and find huge differences between their phone and the original. Even small phones popularly called ‘Torchlight phones’ have fake versions, Chai, dia ris God o!

1) The best way to know a fake phone is by testing its camera. It takes quite a lot of work to build a quality phone camera and it seems most fake phone manufacturers cannot replicate original cameras.
Take pictures with the phone’s cameras, both back and front cameras but especially the back camera and compare them with pictures captured by the original phone’s camera. The best way to compare is to search online for pictures taken with the phone’s camera, a simple Google search can be your saviour from buying a fake phone. Take videos also with the camera and compare the video quality with the original phone’s videos.

2) Another way to detect if a phone is fake, although it is not fool proof is to check the phone grammar thoroughly, I realized that most fake phones have some misspellings, they might be difficult to find but with patience and thorough usage, you will find them.

3) You should also check for the phone’s specifications and features online and compare them to the phone you want to buy, if even one thing is missing, it most likely means the phone is fake, please note that a phone might have several different models with slightly different specs so to be sure, know the exact model you are buying. For example Samsung A3 might be available in two different models, one may be using a Snapdragon Processor and have 3 GB RAM and the other model might be using an Exynos Processor with 4 GB RAM so ask the seller to be sure.

4) Go with a SIM card which has internet subscription on it so that you can test the phone’s internet connectivity and ability to download, update and run apps. Some fake phones have problems connecting to the internet especially with the Airtel network, so I advise that you use the Airtel network to test all apps and try downloading some apps from the Google Play Store.

5) You can also check if a phone is fake by checking its IMEI number on IMEI checking websites. If the phone is original, a search of its IMEI number should return the Phone’s model and year of manufacture. I’m not sure if this is applicable to all phone brands though, I know for sure that it is applicable to big brands such as TECNO, Samsung, Sony etc.

6) For phones which have special features such as Smart Assistants like Siri, S-Voice, Gestures such as Air Gesture, Air View, etc. Make sure you test every special feature the original phone should have and ensure the features are working properly before you buy the phone. For new phones, also check and test all accessories and make sure that they are complete and working well.

Never be in a hurry to but a phone, always make comparisons. With these tips, no one should fall victim of these evil fake phone manufacturers and sellers. Good luck in your next phone purchase.

As a Computer and Phone engineer. I can give u 20 signs to look out for in addition to the above writeup.

1. Check the phone memory. Some phone will have 16 g ram, whereas only 7g out of 16 would be accessible.

2. The location of the Charging port...
Fake phones at times usually have their charging portport wrongly located when u compare it to original phones... This is common especially among Infinix,Techno UK used phones.

3. Weight of the phone:
Fake phones usually are light-weighted in comparison to original phones. This is very common especially among SAMSUNG. When u see a copy of Samsung phone,is very light in weight. But an original Samsung has a considerable weight and a unique design.

4. Number of Sim Port...
Original UK Spec SAMSUNG,MOTOROLA and other high-end phones comes with only one Sim port.. If u see any with two simports, run for ur life.

5. The Country where the phone was manufactured.

Due to the fact that Standard Organization of Nigerian(SON) & SERVICOM are not doing their jobs in regulating fake products coming into the country, majority of substandard products are being dumped on daily basis in Nigeria. And the masses are the one bearing the pain.

Phone made in or made for people in Korea,Germany,US,UK,Ireland are of highest quality compare to the ones designed to be shipped to West Africa...
I no wan talk much on this, but tech savvy people knew what I'm driving at.

6. Price of the Gadget:
Phones/Laptop assembled in Germany,Korea,UK and other developed countries are very expensive and they are beyond the reach of an average Nigerians... They can stand the test of time, highly efficient and durable.
But here in 9ja we like cheap and attractive gadgets, even if its not going to last.....

The list is endless.... But my philosophy is this, buy correct product even if its going to cost you a fortune.

Thanks for having me... ProfGday

Lovely topic. My advice will be to spend an extra N500 and check the phone out with those laptop guys usually hanging around phone retail store.
From experience, the real name of a knock off device is usually revealed when plugged in on a computer. For instance, HTC one m8 will be written as HTC m8. Furthermore, those guys usually have a diagnostic software which reveals all the exact system components of a phone. Check if the processor model is accurate as what is on GSM arena.( fakes usually come with mediatek processor)
Infact, phone retailers will ask to change your device when you ask to be checked out on a computer. They immediately know this one sabi something.

Please, don't add Tekno to the list of top phone brands worldwide! Nobody in Europe or America and other civilised countries have seen or heard about this company or its products!

Most of your tips aren't possible before the purchase of a phone. No sane seller would allow you to test the particular phone you wish to buy before purchase. You can only be allowed to do your test with a test phone of the same model.

So they could use an original phone as a test phone while they sell you a fake one in the package.
