Lagos Rice Mill to start production in 2020
Monday, December 23, 2019


The Lagos State Government on has said the Imota Rice Mill at Imota, in Ikorodu Lagos, will be completed by the second quarter of 2020, with a production capacity of 32,000 tonnes per hour.

According to the Commissioner for Agriculture, Prince Gbolahan Lawal, the State Government-owned Integrated Rice Mill will be also created about 250, 000 jobs from the production down to market.

Lawal disclosed this during an inspection tour of the mill alongside other members of the State Executive Council.

The Commissioner, who was accompanied on the inspection tour by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Olayiwole Onasanya as well as other top officials of the Ministry, noted that the 32 metric-tonnes capacity mill is projected to be producing 2.4million/50kg bags annually.

Buhari should be giving credit for d massive rice revolution in Nigeria. He did vert much well in d sector.

What do you do after harvesting the crop? Do you cook and eat it like that or do you mill the rice?

The farms are there...maybe not getting as much attention. Most of these rice mills are off takers so they buy directly from small to mid scale farmers - process and then sell in their own brand name. Some of the big guys like Chi, Cosharis run this model even though they may have their own farms where they produce and then process at their mills.

In fact, we produce more rice than our mills can process, this is the reason why we still have rice with stones all over the country.

We need more mills.

Actually I have it on good authority that the federal government along with development agencies have specialist who deal in crop quality come in to teach industry players and their farmers how to get the best of the crops from seed to proper handling in processing and storage. I hear they are currently focused on rice and flour.
