With ride ordering apps like Uber and Lyft encroaching on its space, you’ve got to wonder if the days of the humble taxi are numbered. But regardless of how bright or dim its future, the tried and true people carrier is still in abundance in many places around the world. Not only that, they’re often still the most interesting, innovative or just plain efficient way to get around, especially when you’re new to the area.

Naijadriva in this post, takes a look at world’s most distictive taxis. and here they are:

London, England

No list of interesting taxis can be complete without the ubiquitous black cabs of London – which are now not exclusively black, but still just as part of the fabric of the city as red telephone booths and Big Ben. Most taxis in the city are the TX4, built by the London Taxi Company, which is a subsidiary of China’s Geely Automobile. Made to keep the same lines of the traditional cabs that have been around for decades, these one are also incredibly spacious inside and are designed to have an amazingly small turning radius. Plus, the drivers must pass a test known as ‘The Knowledge’ to learn every street of London, so you’ll be in good hands.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Fly in to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and you could be shuttled to town in a brand new Tesla Model X. Taxi company Bios Groep purchased a fleet of Tesla Model S sedans back in 2014, but earlier this year they upgraded them to the new SUVs.Netherlandsutch.

Tokyo, Japan

Japan is full of weird, some old-looking and wonderful taxi types, especially in Tokyo. Most have passenger doors that open automatically thanks to a discrete lever next to the driver’s seat that he or she can pull in order to move the rear doors.
Just some months, an autonomous minivan successfully picked up and dropped off passengers along a 5.3-kilometre stretch of road between two busy districts in Tokyo. Patrons were able to let themselves into the minivan, pay for the ride on their mobile app, and exit upon arrival, all without having to interact with another human.

Mumbai, India

As the capital of the state of Maharashtra in India, Mumbai has a lot of people going a lot of places. Hail a cab here historically and you’d likely be scooped up by one of the most famous cars in the country, the Premier Padmini, which was named after an Indian Queen and manufactured in the country from 1970 to 1998. Starting last year, after decades as the cab car of choice, the Padmini began leasing into its retirement, off the roads and into the annals of India’s cultural history. There are still a few on the road, but their time is numbered. Catch one if you can because it’s likely one of the last remaining on the road.

Berlin, Germany

The taxi situation in Germany is luxe compared with most fleets in North America. By law, every taxi in Germany must be the same colour – a milky cream hue – which feels automatically classy, and most are the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. You’ll find signs of other top of cars from Porsche, BMW and Audi, too. The latest addition to Deutschland’s fleet? Unsurprisingly, the Tesla, in that cream hue, of course.

Havana, Cuba

Walking along the streets of Havana is like wandering through a car museum full of American classics. Candy-coloured vehicles such as 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Airs, 1952 Buicks and 1956 Ford Sunliners line the streets of the port town like forgotten time capsules. When Fidel Castro (somewhat of a car man himself ) took power of the Caribbean country in 1959, he ceased importation of new vehicles, leaving the country to maintain its Fords, Chevys, Buicks from the ’50s as they aged from daily drives into collectors items, supplementing only with some imports from Asian makers such as China’s Geely. The retro rides have become somewhat of an hallmark for the country, and tourists will pay a drive just for the Insta-worthy photo app.

Bangkok, Thailand

Ask someone who’s been to Bangkok about their first tuk-tuk (Also Called Keke NAPEP in Nigeria) experience and you’re guaranteed to hear a story of excitement and probably some fear too. Common in much of Asia, Africa and even a few in Europe and the Americas, the three-wheeled, open-framed auto rickshaws are efficient in the most chaotic way, especially in congested centres like Thailand’s capital city.

Capri, Italy

Leave it to a high-end Italian island in the Amalfi Coast to establish a fleet of convertible cabs. In Capri, visitors can travel between their fives-star hotel to one of the area’s fine-dining options, seated in the back of a ’50s Fiat, top down, naturally. Half a century ago, when film stars and financial moguls would flock to the sunny seaside town, these red convertible taxis were the norm. Today the vehicles are more of a specialty cab, a nod to the region’s chic past, but there’s still no better way to experience Capri’s salty air.

Have you boarded any of these? What do you think? Tell us.

Wow, the differences in countries regarding the taxi services...damn. Even though I'm somehow a little bit surprised about Mumbai, as I've seen in one of my trips very expensive and nice cars. It's true it depends on the side of the town, but most of the cars are now pretty new and nice-looking. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I've seen. For instance, when I arrived at the airport I've taken a called a Taxi Service in Mumbai and I think I got the newest and prettiest car, haha. Also, it was not that expensive and there was no scamming or incredibly high prices like most of the time happens with tourists. I had the best comfort and I was very pleased with the situation. Therefore, I think you can understand my confusion.

That’s one way to distinguish the rich countries and the poor countries. It’s only in poor countries you’ll see keke or rickety cars as taxis.
