The man came to our clinic on the 20th of December 2019, insisting that he should be screened for all possible STDs. He graciously opened up that he had unprotected intercourse 3 days ago, I think in Abuja although he visited our clinic here in Lagos. Noticed raised blister on his penis head the previous day, unsure if it has been there before.

Going by the window period of the viruses, it is most likely he came with the virus from his home country, were he was possibly infected with the virus.

Upon examination by the doctor, two tiny blisters @7 o'clock on penis head, no open break in skin, no drainage, non-painful and no discharge from urethral meatus. No lesions on rest of penis or scrotum.

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 came out POSITIVE after all possible STDs tests ranging form VDRL,HIV, Hep C, HbSAg, Gonorrheal/Chlamydia PCR and HSV 1&2 were conducted. Mind you, the HSV and G/C tests don't come cheap, tests were sent overseas by our partner ISO certified Laboratory.

The said man only visited Nigeria and is back to the Western world. What is the fate of our daughter/"son" whom he had this unprotected sex with knowing that HSV might be asymptomatic and keeps spreading? The man in discourse will have his results sent to his GP over there for effective management.

Herpes Simplex Virus type 1, which is transmitted through oral secretions or sores on the skin, can be spread through kissing or sharing objects such as toothbrushes or eating utensils. In general, a person can only get HSV type 2 infection through sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. It is important to know that both HSV-1 & HSV-2 can be spread even if sores are not present.

It is not curable but treatable with antiviral drugs to minimise its spread to other sexually active individuals. As you go about this festive season, remember to safeguard your body from terminal incurable diseases in the name of having fun, which only last for a moment but with a life long scar, should things go the negative way.
