I’ve watched with amazement how people get sucked into what they hardly know anything about. Meanwhile, because of the state of affairs with our media, we still are perishing over lack of knowledge. I really wonder why we careless about the whys & prefer to dwell on the action. It was the great & venerable Chief Jeremiah Awolowo, who wondered why we always care more about the symptoms, rather than the causes. If you like, call it the mob mentality.
After the civil war & in the run up to the second republic, there were five families that went for Kwara State’s jugular & they were the Royal family of Igbirra that had the Attahs, the royal neighbors in Ilorin- the Abdulganiyu Folorunsho Abdulrasaq & Abubakar Olusola Saraki, the SBs-Silas B Daniyan & Sunday B Awoniyi. With the creation of Kogi State, the SBs & Attahs carried their wahala to Lokoja, Sarakis & Abdulrazaqs continued their asymmetrical political warfare in Ilorin. Meanwhile, the people & both states, remained largely underdeveloped, and Nigeria clapped for them.
Abdulganiyu Folorunsho Abdulrasaq, was the first Commissioner of Finance for Kwara State after the state was formed in 1967. A.G.F. AbdulRazaq, SAN, OFR was born in November 13, 1927. A native of Ilorin West local government area of Kwara state. The first University graduate of Ilorin origin, the first Lawyer in the defunct Northern Nigeria, the first and only National Legal Adviser of the first republic ruling political party (N.P.C),the first Ilorin man to be appointed a diplomat, the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Kwara State & Northern Nigeria & the first Mutawali of Ilorin. He built the first privately owned secondary school in Ilorin.

Olusola Saraki was born on the 17th of May, 1933 and died in Lagos November 14, 2012. His mother was from Iseyin in Oyo State and his father was from Abeokuta but studied Islamic Studies (Ile-Kewu) in Ilorin. His paternal ancestors were Yorubas who came from Abeokuta about 150 to 200 years earlier.Saraki was educated at Eko Boys High School. A graduate of University of London and St. George’s Hospital Medical School, London. He worked as a medical officer at the General Hospital and the Creek Hospital, Lagos.
Olusola Saraki first entered politics when he ran in the 1964 parliamentary election for Ilorin as an independent, but lost. After the election, he returned to his medical practice in Lagos. In 1977, Olusola Saraki was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly that produced the 1979 constitution. In 1979 he was elected a Senator of the Second Republic, and became Senate Leader. In 1983 Saraki was re-elected into the Senate on the National Party of Nigeria(NPN) platform.
Olusola Sakari died on Wednesday 14 November 2012 in Lagos at the age of 79 after a losing a battle with cancer. He was laid to rest in Ilorin.
The competition for power between both families became very visible & open in 1979, when AGF pitched his tent with the GNPP & Oloye became a pillar of the NPN. Saraki triumphed then, but the war shifted to pseudos & asymmetrically too. It’s instructive to note that both parties never directly battled until Ile Arugbo. And that’s after a direct son of AGF defeated the candidate of a direct son of Oloye.
The small story about Ile Arugbo, is that of a big piece of property in the GRA part of Ilorin, that Oloye used his influence to allocate to a company- Asa Investment, he owns 100%. However, on allocation, Asa Investment was expected to pay a sum of over a million naira. Asa Investment failed to pay, but built a three bedroom bungalow on the land that is about half of a side of the entire street. Since the fees were not paid, the process of ownership was left uncompleted. The son of AGF became governor and revoked the allocation of the property to Oloye. Now, the children are very vexed.
When I return from Ilorin in April, for the CLASS OF 80 REUNION, I will update you.
Details later..
