The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, has warned that unless the people of the North change their culture, they will continue to be backward and poor.

The emir, according to a report by PUNCH, made the comment in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Friday while presenting a paper.

Sanusi was represented at the event by Dr Usman Bugaji.

According to the emir, the culture of marrying more than one wife by those who cannot even properly take care of one wife and producing many children was the main reason why the Northern region would continue to remain backward and poor.

He said, “There are people who cannot afford to feed one wife but are ready to marry three wives and have more children than they cannot feed, talk less of paying for their school fees.

“The poverty level of the North is 80 per cent; while in the South, the percentage is 20 per cent simply because of the culture of marrying many wives and producing many children who at the end are left on the streets to beg for what to eat.

“The issues we have today such as drug abuse, Boko Haram, banditry and unemployment would be nothing compared to what we will be dealing with in the next 20 or 30.”

Illiteracy, religious extremism, aristocracy, tribalism and nepotism are the issues affecting the north.

Conquer religious fanaticism and you solve half the problems of the north.

Oga, don’t make more enemies for yourself Oo. They read only the portion where the Quran permits the marriage to more than one wife and not the conditions for that.

Emir Sanusi is a lone voice crying in the wilderness. He is NOT condemning polygamy being a polygamist himself. His message is that men should marry the number of wives and have number of children which their level of resources would maintain.

His message is positive but he needs support. Other educated Emirs should 'royal fatherly' drive this message toward change of mindset. Withholding information and guidance while your subjects wallow in squalor is injustice. Activists like Senator Shehu Sani should back him up. Respected professionals in communities should, as intelligentsia, join the campaign to bring about the necessary change in mindset.

However, one fact of life is that sex can be an opium among the poor. Therefore, the most important thing, in the short-term, is how to design a massive agricultural production programme that will engage millions of young people and empower them financially. The land is there. Government-funded dams are there.

The Hausa Fulani elites have used religion to brain wash their uneducated masses to believing that polygamy is a thing that shouldn't be discouraged and every man should have more than a wife even if he is a pauper that can't even feed a wife. They make them believe that family planning is against Mohammed's law. The only reason why they do that is to have the highest population in their bid to hold on to power and hav control over the Nation's politics and Federal allocations. Greedy "not herners"

To them, this act is politically beneficial to the Islamic govt of the North...



If we scale through with restructuring the country...Where every man will labor from its natural resources to feed it's states... I'm very sure, this act will be condemned and abolished.


Until then, we are just a country that's sharing the oil money gotten from the south to feed abokies in the North.
