Just Negotiate with the Indian software developer you're dealing with, and try to pay him what he'll have been paid working at home plus 10%.

I am an Indian software developer but I don't really know the answer to your question. An average web-developer (php or .net) with 2-3 years experience earns around US$ 250-600 per month (pay varies from company to company, most are on lower side of this scale). C++ developers are costlier, with a good developer with 3 years experience possibly earning upto US$ 500-1000 per month.

Nigeria is not very high on "to visit" countries list people here have in mind. So they will expect good compensation if they are to work there.

by-the-way, what is the average pay of Nigerian developers, is it cheaper to hire Nigerians than it is to hire Indians? (You know why I am asking this ;-) (further offshoring?)

dont bring them here. just pay for the service. it is far cheaper but u need an agent

I agree with the "don't bring them here. just pay for the service". As for needing a agent, I think a better word is a "manager". Someone who manages the hiring, overlooks the work and ensures prompt and quality delivery of end product. Most established players won't even need to hire as they already have a buffer of people ready to work on new projects. You just pay for what you get done, without worrying about all the hassles. And its cheaper in the end.

As for currency conversions, I am an Indian in India and talked in US$ so that we have a "common ground". I wont understand if you talk in Nairas and you wont understand if I told you rates in Indian Rupees. For international deals, either US$ or anyone one of the the currency used by either player can be used for contracts. People hired are ofcourse paid in local currency.

And, if you are interested in exploring more the option of working with an Indian organization on this, I work in a similar organization and we can talk about business (the nature of work you want get done, the rates, timeline, contracts etc...). If you prefer talking about it in private rather than on the forum, we can exchange mail IDs.

Why are you having to out source if I may ask, do you not have software developers in Nigeria? What exactly are your requirements, I should be able to give you an average quote so to say.

Yeah - I am a student in my 2nd year coding my head out. What do you want to develop? is it web based? is it a full client server app. let me know the details and I and my geeks can work on it if the pay is right.

I didn't meant it to turn into a bidding battle. I guess it all depends upon personal choice based on facts, investment and returns.

Ofcourse, if local market can handle the request at competitive prices, it should be preffered. Nothing works better than two people discussing the problem sitting in the same room. Language and same cultural background may also help to some extent, I dont know how much.

Ok just to clarify I wasn't bidding, I wanted to give you an estimate of how much it would cost for a project, generally, indian, nigerian, english, american whatever.
So if he/she costs you less than that then you know you are in for a good bargain. It also depends companies portfolio or request one, their client history etc
Do they take on projects way too frequently (bad) or way to infrequently (also bad).

Not really, it is more expensive to hire an indian I'd presume (exchange rate etc), problem is there aren't that many Nigerian developers to begin with,

I was interested in knowing average Nigerian pay because there is nothing stopping Indian companies from outsourcing their work to other countries, if the difference in cost is attractive enough.

Can you give a rough estimate of what average salary do Nigerian developers get. What is the average pay of a web developer working .Net/PHP? what about C++ developers? For people with how many years of experience?

schngrg:

I am an Indian software developer

Bumped into this topic; don't know if the thread is still active, but I was searching for an Indian software developer for a crossword game I recently completed. I have talked with some programmers based in Nigeria, but I need to compare, first the quality of work then the fees with someone else, preferably an Indian developer. The programming language to be used is C++.

Are you still there Shngrg?

Thanks.
