David Mark As New Senate President: A Joke? by EPOMA(m): 4:39pm On May 31, 2007
I always wonder why Nigerians forget so quickly, it is not long ago when David Mark as Minister for Communication under his God father Babangida stole so much money to that he bought a golf course for 40 million pounds in the UK or Ireland.

The same David Mark once said " that telephone was not for the poor", In another Interview he said " That armed robbers should be shot from their knees down so that they can suffer before they die"

I just wonder what goes on in the mind of David that he is lobbying to be dealing with the affairs of common Nigerians who are poor whom he could not help as a minister during the military rule. Please can someone tell me Has he change?

I feel he should just be on the back seat of the senate and shut up as may be there is no other rich person to be a senator from his senatorial district. We can excuse him for being a senator as we are in democracy. He is not polished at all, he even made a statement saying that it is better for us to have our president as an ex military officer.

Please comment

I remember all these evil remarks from David. It was around 1986.

We are just recycling same 'Ol politicians as mamajama said. We all know how well the technocrats that OBJ appointed performed compared to the mere politicians. I hope we do not regress with these types of appointments

here comes Yaradua's Senate president:

David Mark had a controversial history in Nigeria before he fled into exile in 1994 after he fell out of favor with military dictator, Sani Abacha he first fled to Ghana on exile before moving to the UK, while he was in Ghana, General Abacha contacted Jerry Rawlings of Ghana to help him chase down David Mark because he Abacha found out David Mark had stolen so much money from Nigeria but J.J Rawlings replied that he couldn’t do it because if David Mark was mishandled, the Ghanaian economy will feel the impact. It was true, David Mark was traveling with a huge sum of money in Ghana and for a brief period he was the largest dealer in foreign currency in Ghana according to sources in Ghana who witnessed his brief stay in the West African country.

shocked cool shocked

Victoria’s divorce claims provided the best yet exposé on David Marks corrupt past, in 2000 Victoria successfully got a Family Division court in London to freeze an account owned by David Mark to the tune of 6 million pounds. Obviously the monies in the account were proceeds of corruption from his days as currency courier for the Babangida’s family.

When the list of 135 corrupt persons not fit to stand elections was doctored, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu said "the more you see the less you understand". God knows why PDP thinks of all the Senators from North Central it must be David Mark??

While the statement in red is unfortuntate, what exactly is the problem with the statement in green? Armed robbers have done worse things to their victims so why the empathy here or are we indirectly defending armed robbers?
Re: David Mark As New Senate President: A Joke? by Ndipe(m): 11:39am On Jun 04, 2007
The statement alluded to Rawlings that Mark's capture would cripple Ghana's economy. Is it a joke or really true?

True to expectations, Senator David Bonaventure. Alakhenu Mark, from Benue South, this afternoon emerged as the sixth Senate President in this 4th Republic, beating former Governor George Akume to the exalted seat. At the end of the more than three hours exercise, mark scored 68 votes to beat Akume who scored 39 votes. One of the senators-elect (Chimaraoke Nnamani) was absent while another abstained.

Mark, the consensus candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was nominated by Senator Lee Maeba from Rivers State.

His nomination was seconded by the only Accord Party Senator, Patrick Osakwe.

The election, which was televised live, showed senators-elect signifying their choice by standing up for their candidate.

At the end of the exercise, it was obvious that Senator Mark had carried the day. Before the election, security was tight within and outside the National Assembly as thousands of supporters and well-wishers of the lawmakers were denied entry into the complex.

The police had a difficult time keeping the crowd at bay. The immediate past governor of Niger State, Engineer Abudlkadir Kure, was among the visitors denied entry into the complex.

The former governor, whose wife is among the new senators, was denied access into the gallery where important guests sat, by the sergeant-at-arm.

The sergeant-at-arm sent him back because he had no invitation card to attend the ceremony.

Guests at the ceremony included former governors, senators, ministers and traditional rulers.

WITH a wide margin of 68 to 39 votes, former Army General, David Bonaventure Alechenu Mark, yesterday beat the former Governor of his Benue State, Mr. George Akume, to become the sixth Senate President of the Fourth Republic. Incidentally, it is also the sixth Senate of the sixth National Assembly.

By 12.03 p.m., Senate President Mark took the oath of office as his supporters backslapped, laughed, and hugged.

Ike Ekweremadu was also elected Deputy Senate President after Mark had taken his seat. The dramatic election was presided over by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Nasir Arab; his deputy, Kola Ogunyomi; and other officials of the National Assembly.

The drama that led to the election of Mark began at 9.13 a.m. when the lawmakers began arriving at the chamber in trickles.

At 10.20 a.m., Arab in the traditional flowing black robe and white wig came into the Chambers with his officials. At 10.24 a.m., he read a letter proclaiming the new National Assembly from President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

A roll call of members was taken, but only a little over 70 members were seated. The Clerk of the Senate had to repeat the roll call twice as senators continued to come in. In the end, only one Senator-elect, former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu State was absent. No reason was given on the floor for his absence.

All through the reading of the roll, former Governor Sani Ahmed Yerima of Zamfara State appeared restless as he continued to lobby his colleagues for Akume.

As soon as the Clerk announced that 108 senators were present, he declared that the election into the Office of Senate President and Deputy Senate President would be guided by the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Rule book.

He called for nominations. Lee Maeba took the floor and proceeded to tell the Senators-elect how the PDP hierarchy had picked Mark as its consensus candidate. He also referred to Senate Rule 97(1)(f) which required election and appointments to be based on ranking.

Maeba reeled out Mark's military career and noted that the preferred candidate had served the Senate for two terms between 1999 and 2007. The senator from Rivers State added that Mark served meritoriously in several senate committees.

Patrick Osakwe, who seconded the nomination of Adolphus Wabara same time four years ago, played the same role yesterday. According to him, Mark "will be a square peg in a square hole."

Osakwe said that the election of Mark as Senate President would foster a good working relationship with the executive arm of government.

Mark thereafter rose to "humbly and gracefully" accept the nomination. There was applause in the Chamber. However, Akume and Yerima were among the group that did not clap.

The Clerk asked if there were other nominations. Suleiman Nazif of the Action Congress (AC) from Bauchi State rose to nominate Akume also of the PDP. Some senators began to ask loudly that Nazif state his political party, but he ignored them.

The Clerk cautioned against the disturbance because party affiliation was not a requirement to nominate anyone. Caleb Zagi from Kaduna South (PDP), another freshman who graduated from the House of Representatives, seconded the nomination.

Zagi quoted Sections 50 and 52 of the constitution and Section 3 of the Senate Rules Book to back his nomination of the former governor. He faulted claims that Section 97(1)(f) barred non-ranking senators from contesting the Senate presidency. According to him, the rule could only come into play after enators had been sworn in.

Akume rose to accept the nomination, but his nervousness showed when he began to state that he had been "Governor since 1977". His opponents booed, but the former governor quickly stopped himself and accepted the nomination.

There was silence as the Clerk of the National Assembly asked if there were other nominations. For a few seconds, no one moved. But then, Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta (PDP, Niger West) raised his hand. The silence became very obvious as the Senators began exchanging glances.

Kuta nominated Nuhu Aliyu, former Police Deputy Inspector General, and Senator since 1999. He eulogized Aliyu, whom he described as a ranking Senator of note. Bala Mohammed seconded the nomination.

And yet came another nomination. Satty Gogwin, the man who stopped former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu from returning to the chamber nominated Gbemi Saraki from Kwara State. For a while, it appeared that there would be no seconder until another returnee Senator from Kwara State, Ahmed Mohammed declared his support.

She accepted the nomination.

As soon as the nominations closed at 11.30 a.m , Aliyu asked the Clerk to clarify the Senate Rule on ranking.

Arab told him: "We are not going into that, we are just going into voting, and it is going to be by simple majority."

Aliyu withdrew from the race, declaring that he was stepping down for Akume.

Arab told him to simply step down without mentioning the name of who he was stepping down for.

At 11.32 a.m., Saraki also stepped down. Arab called the movers and seconders of the nominations of Mark and Akume to come forward. The Clerk then proceeded to call senators one by one as they openly declared their votes.

All the former Governors on the floor - Yerima, Adamu Aleiro (Kebbi), Ahmed Markarfi (Kaduna), Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe), Saminu Turaki (Jigawa) and Akume voted against Mark, prompting a Senator to declare that "it was a rude awakening to reality" for them.

OKAY, WHEN I GAVE MY OPINION ON "IS YAR'ADUA DULL? SOME PIPO THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY AND DO NOT PRAY FOR D PROGRESS OF THIS NATION, THIS WAS MY OPINION MY FELLOW NIGERIANS,

Nigerian's politics is a nest of kin affair, a family affair for that matter, notin good can come out of these politiciansa, rather, empty promises, imagine some1 that has said all those things to this nation, and looted nigerians money, its the same person appearing as the number 1 law maker, in a country like this,

When r we going to learn our lessons? when r we going to understand that these pipo has no good plans for us, they are there to loot and frustrate innocent ciitizens, when!!! i blieve from what i saw from your opinions that DAvid Mark as a senate president will run down this nation,

God Help uss ohhhh from these pipo

what baffles me most is that, we are always fund of repeating mistakes, putting round pegs in a square hole, why!
Re: David Mark As New Senate President: A Joke? by nikynike(f): 2:14pm On Jun 06, 2007
David Mark as a new senate president makes no difference to me. He's not supposed to have returned to government again. I still don't understand why all these people cannot allow the country to move forward. If Yaradua is not careful, he will mess up his tenure. Why does he like engaging people who cannot assist him in moving the country forward? Well, as far as lm concern, David Mark is nobody to Nigerians.
