This shows how un-serious our government is. Even if we can't think of new solutions, we should at least copy what other serious countries are doing. This self quarantine will not work. If we can't restrict travelling from China, let the government take over resorts or hotels far from the city center, then move China passengers from the airport directly to this facilities for 14 days to be monitored. All the expenses will be on the government.

The flaw in this self quarantine is that even if these new arrivals decide to self quarantine (which is impossible), they will have contacts with family members who will in turn have contact with the outside world. Also, I heard of some Chinese workers in Lagos here who have already resumed back to work last week, just a day after arrival.

Ministries of health, please take this Corona virus seriously. Protection of lives first before business. Even US, Japan, Israel, Philippines, etc with better heath facilities have closed their borders. Even within China, there is movement restriction between provinces and cities.

I read the post thoroughly and I don't have comprehension issues. It was an advice I thought superfluous in the African context though germane elsewhere. You and I know that the enlightenment for self-quarantine in cases of suspected exposure is not there. What the government can do is to raise grassroots awareness and initiate ways and means of isolating suspected cases for quarantine. Many people are still dying of HIV/AIDS despite free tests and treatment available in many government hospitals. People will rather go to babalawos that they are having spiritual attack or witchcraft other than self-quarantine. It's the reality here.

it really pathetic that this can be coming from a commissioner of health. How can someone be allow to leave the airport and go home to do self quarantine. Are we saying the person should go home and infect is family. A good government will provide a facility for people coming from this virus prone country most especially china. But as long as there is no money to pocket citizen should cater for themselves even China do not give such advice.

And come to think of it, the outbreak is not yet here in Nigeria hear what a state commissioner is saying...'self quarantine'. The government of the day had lost all sense of responsiveness.

Self quarantine may not be effective!!

Why can't the Government be in charge of the quarantine to ensure that patient is kept away from unexposed individuals over the period of observation..

I think it is better to keep them in a particular unit set aside by the Government rather than asking them to quarantine themselves at home!!!

What rubbish does unsupervised, self quarantine mean? So, they won't be monitored throughout the incubation period? Just imagine such folly! People come in their numbers from China to Lagos by air every other day. What are the odds that they will all heed to this self quarantine nonsense?

Every person from China has to be quarantined right from the airport. If one of the people entering Lagos from China, for instance, has the virus, do they know how many he/she may have potentially infected, from other passengers on the flight, to pedestrians and motorists alike en route their homes, to their very own family members?!

Can't these buffoons see how developed countries are handling this virus? Outrightly banning anyone from China and even preventing people from going to China (like the U.S.)? This should be the first reasonable step any country looking to prevent the virus should take, by enforcing very stringent travel restrictions on anything from China.

Medics and facilities should be on ground at our international airport to quarantine any Chinese, foreign national, or Nigerian, who has visited China in the last 2 weeks. There should also be quarantine facilities and medical personnel working with customs and immigration services at our borders, to prevent entry from neighboring countries like Benin Republic.

C'mon, some serious countries, even without any case of the virus, have already deployed quarantine chambers at their airports for God's sake! Where did we go wrong? Why is this government founded on folly? We are truly in the hands of not only incompetent leaders, but also foolhardy cretins.
