Palpable tension yesterday enveloped residents of Abeokuta metropolis, the capital city of Ogun State following an inter tribal conflict which broke out between traders of Hausa and Yoruba ethnic tribes in the state.

The crisis, which occurred in the evening at the popular Lafenwa market of the metropolis, was caused by the rumoured death of an Hausa trader who was allegedly hacked down by tax collectors in the market.

Crisis started when one of the Hausa trader, whose identity was yet to be ascertained as at the time of filling this report, allegedly refused to pay the mandatory daily market levy to the market tax collectors after about 10 hours of his trading in the market.

Although details of what transpired at the market still remain sketchy, an eye witness however, told LEADERSHIP that the market tax collectors, who were mostly street urchins, descended on the Hausa trader, machetted him severally and left him in the pool of his blood before they vamoosed from the scene.

According to our source, his co-Hausa traders later rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment where he allegedly gave up the ghost.

Meanwhile, there are still controversies over details of his death as information had it that the man was still alive and not dead yet.

It was further gathered that other Hausa traders at the Lafenwa market mobilised for a reprisal attack when news of his death got to them around 8p.m. when they allegedly attacked some traders in the market.

The development however, caused heavy traffic gridlock in the area as other traders and passersby also scampered for safety for fear of being caught in the melee, while men of the Nigeria police from the nearby Lafenwa Police Divisional headquarters also hurriedly mobilised personnel to the scene to curtail further escalation of the crisis.

When contacted, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi assured that the police was on top of the situation.

The PPRO explained that it would be difficult to ascertain the cause of the crisis as at press time as he was in Agbara area of the state on an official assignment.

Oyeyemi however, promised to adequately brief the media as soon as his office has details of what transpired at the market.

Always Hausa and Yoruba. Igbo and yoruba alledgedly hate themselves, yet you hardly hear of them fighting like the yoruba and Hausa do. It baffles me.
