My Dad has retired from civil service, he retired after 35 years of service. He joined the service early and so retired before he clocked 60. Nothing to show for it after 35 years.

He has been at home for 2 years now, i placed him on monthly salary but he is not that type, he is not lazy. he would prefer to do his own thing, make his own money.

He is asking me to buy him a bus so he could run town service. I am not comfortable with this request. buying a car is a liability...considering his age, he may not cope with pressures of being on the road everyday....A bus can pack up anytime with complex issues or even accident.

I told him i am happy to grant his request, however, i cant afford a brand new bus. He has given me a budget of 3 million for Tokunbo, 5.6 million for Direct Belgium.

I have told him that i am not comfortable spending such money on a bus considering his residual health issue and his age.

I have proposed that 5 million naira will rent a good shop for 2 years and stock the shop for him to start business... He has asked me the business he can start if he gets a shop...

Transporters in the house what do you think.

Guys in retail or wholesale business, what BUSINESS do you recommend for a man of 59 years. (3-5 Million is the budget for now)

I don't want to waste money on wrong investment

Nice one trying to help him out. This would have been best answered in the Business section. However, as you said earlier, he might not cope with the transportation biz, it's too stressful for a man his age.

The other alternative is better, I would suggest wine and assorted drinks biz.

You are a good son!!

But make him understand that now is the time to rest and flex. He has worked part his life, he needs to relax!

Buying him a bus is not healthy for his age, if you must get him a store, cement business is a good business these days, he can have 2 boys working under him.

Again he needs to relax and enjoy, there is time for everything, now is the time to rest

Tokumbo and direct Belgium na same thing naa.

At your post, I think it's better to ask him what he wants to do. That's what will give him joy while doing it. He may not want to sit down in shop to wait for customers. If transport business is what will keep him happy, then consider it too.

Remember he is no longer hustling to raise the family. So he may only be driving when he feels like.

So his happiness comes first. Ask him.

No am not in Lagos ,am in Bayelsa ,I work with the Federal University over here, its mostly shuttle in and out of the community where the university is,95% are students,2% community and 3% staffs of the institution ,if its in Lagos ehn oboy u motor body go done look like say u buy am for 1991,they looks brand new with no scratch due to the area not like Lagos ,
. But mind u,every month u need to give money for servicing (change of oil and oil filter )which is 4k monthly ...
. U can also give it for higher purchase ,mine isn't higher purchase cuzz it's a straight road and good community area so its safe and the bus will last ,u can also give it so someone to manage it for u,same am doing ,so the drivers contact him not u the owner always .all u wait for is ur money by Saturday night .21k

Bro ue making sense sha ,but truth be told transport business for a man at that age is a no no,for him to drive it himself,it will just bring him down mentally ,health wise ,its not what he sees it as,been on the road from morning driving till night with all the Agbero's wahala and Lagos state ? Ahhhh he should think twice,at this age he should be resting or doing easy job for pleasure or money if he wants too but not car driving ,at his age ,except he wants his dad to look 95 years just after 3 months of it

Thanks guys. My dad doesn't drink alcohol because of his Faith neither will he sell it. So drinks or joint is out of it.

Cement business as suggested may be cool but how lucrative is it now. How do you market such product?

Will appreciate if i can get details on that or other suggestions..

What about a dealership? Open a shop for him to sell wholesale eg Indomie, Soft drinks, Bottled water etc

Hmmmmm. Awesome. I have always considered Wholesale against retail. something that he buys in bulk and dispose to retailers.

Thanks for this.

It's very lucrative, we plan on opening one for my dad when he retires by Oct.

Meet 4-5 cement sellers in your local state, find out from them the pros and cons of the business

Boss run from any thing cement business. They will use debts and finish your capital. When you refuse to sell on credit the cement will spoil after 3 months. Talking from experience.

My challenge with provision is that the man is too nice. if anyone says he has not eaten, my dad will give things out free.

then you have to teach him how to be strict,, start the business with a lesser amount like 500k and watch him before increasing his capital. it's always advised to start a new business with a small capital, then grow it to millions. trust me if you give you pops man 4 million now to start a business he wont be able to control the money because he has been a civil servant all his life.
