Disclaimer: this is purely not a discrimination against any religion in particular!

Emile Durkheim
defined religion as "a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say things set apart and forbidden - beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community...

Religion as you would believe is a universal practice, but Christianity and Islam are never local to Africa, not even our country Nigeria. The two aforementioned religions were introduced into Nigeria by missionaries you’d agree with me.

Economic importance of religion
Scholars hypothesise religion impacts economic outcomes through religious doctrines promoting thrift, work ethic, honesty and trust.

Others argue it promotes cooperation and trust within culturally defined groups or clubs.[12] Studies compare the complementary effects of religious values such as charity, forgiveness, honesty and tolerance and religious social groups where membership instils favouritism or discrimination towards in or outgroup members.
[Wikipedia]

Scholars argued religion promotes work ethic, honesty and trust. In Nigeria today, the opposite is the case. Pastors and Imams now keep job opportunities to themselves and and their kins.

Some argued further to state that religion encourages charity; but is that actually so? It’s a NO! Clergies today do the opposite. They want their followers to donate to them irrespective of the pandemic the world is facing. They need these offerings for upkeep, to buy private jets, travel first class, wear designer shoes et al. The fact is that yes they do charity, but when donations surpasses charity, that’s a big threat!

The wiki quote further argues religion encourages tolerance. Needless to say much, even on this site, we know it’s the opposite.

Shortcomings of religion:

1. Terrorism/intolerance: Nigeria has never been more tensed as she is. It’s either terror against a religious group or the other.

2. Brainwashing:
Enough of clergies telling youths that all they need to be successful is tithing/offering/acts of worship. This is also extended to the traditional worshippers. The acts of ritual believing is the true way to prosperity has rendered a lot of humans dead, and a lot of corpses in the graveyard “skull-less”.

3. Separation: one thing that has divided this country the most is religion, ethnic divide is no where close to religious divide. This has rendered our electoral psyche useless, as electorates now vote along religious divides, rather than genuine interests.

Possible clues

1. Government should closely regulate and monitor the activities of every religious bodies. Government should limit religious houses to the barest minimum. As opposed to current practices of erecting religious houses anywhere and under any condition, the government should regulate these and make sure every proposal to erect new buildings must go through licensing by the government. The number of religious houses and the noise pollution they add to the society is alarming.

2. The government should regulate and monitor each religious donations. No religious house should be able to control its resources independently. Let’s see how many clergies will remain afterwards.

3. The government should enforce religious leaders to teach their followers that “Hardwork comes first, then prayer/faith makes it successful”. Grave punitive laws should be enacted against any religious head encouraging rituals or other incriminating practices. This will greatly reduce ritual killings, harvesting of skulls and scavenging for wet and dry faeces.

4. The government should seriously sanction any religious house reported to disrupt the peace of same community due to noise pollution. This system is in place already, but it’s very weak and only local to some state. The federal government should champion this fight, create a federal agency and website where citizens can launch complaint and upload exhibits and proofs.
