Work has started alongside the Beitbridge border post with construction teams building the 1.8 metre high fence which will span 20km on each side of the border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The fence is aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

"This is to ensure no undocumented or infected persons cross into the country and vice- versa, in line with one of the measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa that South Africa’s borders and ports are to be secured with immediate effect", Minister of Public Works Patricia de Lille.

Officials in Zimbabwe have reacted indifferently to South Africa's announcement that it planned to erect a fence along the border.

"Some people build durawalls around their houses, fields or properties and some put up fences. This is a choice people make on how to show their boundaries. The type of demarcation they choose is their sovereign right. The same applies to international boundaries", Nick Mangwana, Spokesman for Zimbabwe's government.
