The most detailed official analysis yet of the current Covid-19 situation in South Africa has shown alarming infection rates during the winter season which begins next month.

This is according to a presentation made to Parliament's portfolio committee on health this week.

The report shows that the country's extended five-week national lockdown has only postponed South Africa's worst-case Covid-19 scenario to September, when millions of people will have been infected.

MAJOR CITIES HIT HARD

In a worst-case scenario, the two most populous provinces will bear the most brunt.

Gauteng province (encompassing Pretoria and Johannesburg) would see over 1.5 million Covid-19 infections at the end of winter.

This will be followed by KwaZulu-Natal (encompassing Durban) with one million cases.

South Africa currently has 2173 confirmed cases and 25 deaths (Sunday, 12 April).

PREPAREDNESS

The country currently has 4 909 critical care hospital beds available, but the need for beds in intensive care units could exceed 14 700 at the highest level of infection.

Only "severe to critical Covid-19 patients" will be treated at hospitals, while "mild to moderately infected patients" will be accommodated at field hospitals where basic medical care will be provided.

However, the lockdown is buying the government two more months to prepare for a flooding of hospitals at the end of winter, in late August.

Covid is going to stick around for some time I'm afraid. An approved global vaccine is still 6 to 18 months away, while some countries that experienced the virus earlier than Africa like China and South Korea are now worried about a second wave of Covid.
