NEWSCOVID-19 palliatives: Islamic group laments marginalisation of Igbo, religious sentiments

Published 4 hours ago on April 17, 2020By John Owen Nwachukwu

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has demanded transparency in the process leading to the identification of indigent Nigerians and vulnerable people within communities at grassroots level in the Federal Government’s disbursement of palliatives.

MURIC questioned the manner names of beneficiaries of relief packages were being collated.

This was revealed in a press statement signed by the director of the human rights group, Professor Ishaq Akintola, and made available to DAILY POST on Friday

“We need to monitor the modalities for selection of indigent Nigerians and vulnerable people within communities at the grassroots. Government should release the names of community leaders who supplied the names of beneficiaries. The parameters for collating names of beneficiaries should also be made public.

“Such yardsticks should be devoid of religious or partisan considerations. It is only when this is done that the system can be described as open.

“We demand transparency in the process. Already, there are allegations of marginalization of sections of Nigerian citizens and people of particular faith in the distribution of COVID-19 palliatives in some states. I think this should not be happening at a time when the whole of humanity faces this horrible monster.

“Exempli gratia, residents of Victory Estate, Iba in Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Ojo Local Government in Lagos State have alleged total marginalization in the distribution of relief materials.

“They complained that not a single pack was received by any of the residents in a heavily populated estate. Incidentally this is an area fully dominated by people of Igbo extraction. Is it ethnicity or partisan politics? The Lagos State Government needs to look into this.

“We have received damning reports from some states but we want to be mature in the way we handle the allegations. This is not the time for parochial approaches.

“We will not name names but state governments where people are being marginalized on the basis of religion should take the cue from this message otherwise they will be exposed. We should not allow the integrity of the process to be eroded by individuals who have selfish interests.

“Finally, we encourage states to set up the machinery for the registration of senior citizens (anyone who is 60 and above).

“This database can be used for the preparation of post-COVID-19 welfare packages for the elderly in each state. Such an arrangement will eject a heavy dose of humanity in our country. We must not be thinking of the present alone. We must plan for the future.”

In a country where over 70 per cent live on less than a dollars day, almost everyone requires some kind of help. If they are playing tribalism with this, it means the southerners are under occupation and it shouldn't be allowed to continue.

true Igbos don't need d government to survive
all these year of neglect have made them adapt to taking care of themselves and helping their brothers without waiting for any government. the government can keep their palliative rubbish. Well to do Igbos have already done for their brothers wat government cannot be able to do.

Sincerely our way of life is completely disorganised, also is our way of doing things. We've never considered data gathering or analysis to be of any use, how then do we have a structured and balanced way of sharing palliatives? The bulk of the sharing will eventually end up in the hands of wrong people who do not need it in the first place. We have a challenge at hand now, you want people to sit at home, you have less resources to make them sit at home, you have to segment population of who get these palliatives, you don't have data of these people. What do you do? You share randomly where majority will not get and these majority will definitely disobey the lockdown order. You are back to square one.

These are my fears, how do you curtail this pandemic? How do we survive when the pandemic has gone out of hand?

African and Nigeria in particular, what we all think about is greed, wetin i go chop? Not how i do contribute to save the society, Not in "what ways can i help"? Even if you were to be in the category of sensible people who want to help, you'll find out that your efforts in helping will not have any impact because majority have already positioned themselves to sabotage your efforts of help/contribution.

The surest thing to do is make your self safe, try to find how to run your business from home and stay alive.

Am not dancing to the sentimental music that muric is is about playing.
Honestly, I have always asked this question:
Is Okokomaiko, Shibiri , Igbo- Elerin Ajangbadi, Magbo down to Badagry, part of Lagos state?
There is nothing this government has done in this lockdown, except the closure of Alaba Market, to the best of my knowledge, that these areas have been part of.
Palliatives, fumigation, distribution of sanitizers even sensitization prior to the Lockdown, these areas saw none.So when muric plays the ethnic card, one may begin to wonder.

I can see some of these igbos have started boasting up there that they can survive without federal government but if you check their state governments performance compare to other regions, it's nothing to write home about.

The worst tribe to fight for in Nigeria are igbos and the reason is very simple. It's a known fact that majority of our Igbo brothers are suffering from inferiority complex. When you give them strength or support them, they feel insecure or they will start making noise that they are the best in Nigeria and also when you tackle them, they start crying marginalization.

No matter how you try to uplift them, they will never see the good in you because of the hatred they have for other tribes. MURIC should stop giving them strength.
