cool pic. but are these yoruba ppl performing?

They are not Yoruba. Those are bonafide Hausa men. And they did not steal any clothing from anyone. Actually, their clothing type was borrowed from the Senegalese groups, especially as Fulani herdsmen spread entered the region from the Senegambia area, which is the Fulani homeland. And then that spread to the Yorubas as Islam spread in the region.

This is more influenced by Islamic dress code.

^^those ones really do look yoruba though.

even down to the drum.

arent those yoruba caps?

maybe they give room for different cultures to perform since hausas normally wear babanriga, not buba and sokoto or whatever that outfit is called.

The Grand Boubou/Bubu is one of the names for a flowing wide sleeved robe worn by men in much of West Africa, and to a lesser extent in North Africa, related to the Dashiki suit.

It is known by various names, depending on the ethnic group wearing them: Agbada (Yoruba, Dagomba), Babban Riga (Hausa), K'sa (Tuareg) Grand Boubou (in various Francophone West African countries) and the English term of Gown.

This is Islamic dress, which is common amongst Islamic groups. It is not surprising that the type of clothing would spread into Yorubaland, because of Islamic conversion. However, to say they are Yoruba is not true.

The Senegalese Boubou, a variation on the Grand Boubou described below, is also known as the Senegalese kaftan as shown below.

Men dressed in traditional clothes ride horses during the Durbar festival in Kano November 28, 2009. The Durbar is a traditional horse-riding festival hosted by the Emir of the northern city of Kano to mark the Eid al-Adha Muslim celebration. Groups of horsemen representing nearby villages take turns to charge towards the Emir, pausing before him to pay their respects.

Awesome Picture

Shege danuwa !!!

Many people do not know that Kano people have the oldest self-written history in Nigeria. Their weather was also kind to their architecture as the Hausa also have the oldest standing structures in Nigeria thanks to low rainfall and arid conditions.

Very nice. smiley I'd love to be there in person. A festival I can enjoy almost as much as the Eyo Festival.

As someone said, there aren't a lot Hausa or Fulas on NL. I don't blame them one bit.

They are not Yoruba. It is traditionally a dress code reserved for two groups of people: Wawan Sarki da Jama'ansa (The Clown King and his followers) and Mafarauta da Yan banga (Hunters and private vigilante). The guys in this picture are 'Yan Banga, who clears the road for the king or traditional ruler. They are normally armed with with sticks called Gora in Hausa and then dancing to the tune of their drum called Kalangu.

durbar is cancelled this year due to boko haram [insecurity] and also the emir's health.

from bbc:

Kano cancels famous durbar horse festival

A festival held during Muslim Eid celebrations has been cancelled in northern Nigeria, a region hit by a wave of militant Islamist attacks.

A BBC reporter says it is the first time in more than 200 years that the three-day durbar, or horse parading ceremony, in Kano has been called off.

Officials said it was being cancelled as the Emir of Kano was in poor health.

Last week, a devotional retreat that takes place towards the end of Ramadan was cancelled due to security concerns.

The ritual is referred to as "i'tikaf" when some people spend the last 10 days of Muslim fasting month in seclusion praying in mosques.

Analysts say another reason for the durbar's cancellation may be continued concerns about security and the campaign of violence being waged by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

In a statement, palace official Abbas Sanusi said the Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero, could not go ahead with the durbar festival, known as Hawan Sallah, because of his "fragile" health.

The emir's palace said the public should pray for his recovery and for peace to return to Kano state.

The BBC's Yusuf Yakasai in Kano city says it is not clear from what illness the emir is suffering.

The traditional ruler, who has been on the throne for 49 years, had been to the UK in July for medical treatment, our reporter says.

Thousands of people - mainly Muslims from the Hausa ethnic group - normally attend the durbar, a parade performed by galloping horsemen during Eid, which is due to take place at the weekend.

The emir is expected to ride a horse for three days, as the durbar honours the power and heritage of the Hausa community - one of the largest in Nigeria.

The cancellation has caused much disappointment in Kano, our reporter says.

While most people accept that the emir's illness caused the cancellation, a few people suspect that security concerns also led to the decision, he says.

Centuries-old Eid festival cancelled in Nigeria

http://news.yahoo.com/centuries-old-eid-festival-cancelled-nigeria-180103676.html

The festival has taken place in Kano, the largest city in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north, for five centuries, featuring a horse pageant called a durbar, where riders in colourful robes and turbans pay homage to the local emir.

"Due to His Royal Highness's ill health, he has mandated me to inform you that he has cancelled all Sallah festivities ... but will only attend the Eid prayers at the mosque," the emir's senior counsellor Abbas Sunusi told reporters

On Saturday, soldiers raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout outside the city and discovered a cache of arms including guns and explosives.

Authorities said three suspects arrested in the raid confessed that the arsenal was intended for attacks in the city during Eid.
